High quality throughout

A perfect place for a few days of relaxing and self-pampering. The spa area is very big and didn't feel overcrowded even on a day with full occupany (public holiday). The location by the fjord means you can go right into the sea for a cooling swim after your "sauna experience". Great staff!

Good hotel and Restaurant excellent

Stayed for three nights attending a wedding. Room good with very comfortable bed. Could use a bedside table on both sides of the bed though. View from the window not so good - straight into a building site at window level and quite close. The breakfast offering was incredible with a very large selection on offer. Did eat one night in the restaurant which excellent. Prices reasonable and staff friendly.

Lovely, unique home from home

Reviewed By rphobson

Delightful, unique and characterful hotel, about as different from a chain hotel as one can imagine. Ronne was a very welcoming host, and always happy to help answer my touristy questions. The room was large, clean and warm (November in Norway!) and beautifully decorated with a mixture of old (antique furniture and paintings) and new (kettle, hob, microwave, toaster, coffee machine and the entire bathroom). The kitchen facilities within the room were perfect for our catering requirements (mainly making tea, coffee, porridge, toast etc). The hotel is situated right by the harbour in a very old and lovely part of Larvik, with the whole city within easy walking distance. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and very much hope to be able to stay there again sometime.

Dette var en positiv opplevelse . Veldig fine og rene rom, med kjøleskap. Vi slappa av i den koselige bakgården om kvelden. Her fikk vi smaksprøver fra deres lille bedrift. Fantastisk vertskap . Vi kommer garanter tilbake ved en senere anledning .

We had a room in the basement, the only window was in the entrance area, but the room and the bathroom had good size. The WIFI worked well in our room. The breakfast buffe had the standard choices, not more.

Toldgaarden

A quaint little guesthouse with rooms and apartments for 1 - 5 people. Each apartment includes a bathroom, kitchen, and private entrance from the outside area. The guesthouse has a modern style, but a historic atmosphere. Toldgaarden received Larvik's Conservation Prize in 2010.

A nice hidden gem stay for our trip

Very nice hotel, its location is perfect, just near a marina and a park, it is nice to take a walk along the sea outside. The hotel room is spacious and clean, it has all we need, a kitchenette, a clean bathroom and a comfy bed. The yard is very pretty too, pebble stones make it more like a french yard, not something usual for Norway. Parking is easy too, lots of space in the back yard. Will definitely recommend.

I stayed here with my dog. Some of the rooms are motel rooms with their own entrance from the courtyard. I rented one of these. There's a small cooking corner with fridge, water cooker and cooking plates but no casseroles etc. Room is small but ok, I like the entrance straight to the room, easy with a dog and also if one has more stuff to carry:). TV and wifi didn't work but I didn't need any of it so I didn't ask about it either. Small but good breakfast, it was OK to bring breakfast to room which was nice. Pool is out of order til August I think. I loved the location because the park, Bøkeskogen. Very short way for a nice forest walk. There's also a restaurant(dog friendly!) in the middle of the forest. The hill up to the hotel is kinda crazy, just saying:) I would imagine I could stay here again if traveling with my dog-its not always easy to find a place with entrance on ground level.

Decent breakfast saved this from 1 star rating

Stayed 1 night in June. Whether this is the off-season or not I don't know but this place was like a ghost town. It almost looked as if they were in the middle of re-modelling and should really have been closed but decided to take our internet booking anyway. The complex looks like an old ski lodge that had seen it's best times in the 70's or 80's. When we arrived, there was nobody there to greet us, just a note on reception door saying our room numbers. These numbers were completely different from the numbers that were shown on the outside of the buildings. We eventually found our rooms thanks to what I believe was someone that rented a room there permanently. My room was small to say the least, the TV had about 3 channels available and there really wasn't much in the room apart from a chair, a bed and a lamp that didn't work. The bathroom was pathetic. The shower - the worst I've ever come across. Why would you have 6 jets of water spraying out at your midriff when the two sliding doors that meet in the middle behind you don't even close properly?! The other members of my group had the 'Bridal Suite'. Now I use this term loosely as if I was on my honeymoon and got put in this room I think it would be a very bad omen for the marriage. Window pane broken - easily fixed by sellotaping a piece of polystyrene over it. Sorted. Electrical socket and wires not just loose but completely out of the wall. Not that a DVD player was needed but the description did say rooms came with one. Perhaps they were the ones stacked up in a pile out on the corner of the stairs in the passage. That day we'd driven a long distance and just wanted some food and to get some rest. Signs out on the road, never mind the website and booking information said there was a restaurant on site. Well technically this is true, but it was closed for the season when we stayed, so we ended up having to drive across the mountain to Skien for something to eat. Miraculously, breakfast was served in the morning and it actually wasn't bad. All in all, I've stayed in better youth hostels and for a fraction of the cost of this spot. It's a real shame because it's such a lovely location with the lake/pond out front. Unfortunately I left feeling like I'd been robbed.
