The Home Plate Restaurant in Butner was "once-upon-a-time" a large eat-in Seafood restaurant with an "oyster bar!" All that changed many years ago and now it is a "plain-Jane" - "down-home" cafeteria style restaurant. You line up at the food counter and a server fills a Styrofoam plate with a meat and two sides plus bread (hushpuppies or rolls) for just over $6.00. Drink is extra. The servers really give you your money's worth plus some! They have certain meats for the different days of the week plus a couple that are not listed on the board in the window. They include: Fried chicken, fried pork chops, baked pork chops, barbequed chicken, country style steak with gravy & onions, meatloaf, chicken & dumplings fried fish, hamburger steak with gravy, plus other items that I am forgetting to mention. They always have five or six different sides (potatoes, mac & cheese, cabbage, pinto beans, white beans, corn, squash, green beans, baked beans, broccoli, etc.) plus slaw, potato salad, deviled eggs, garden salad, etc. You can dine in or take out. The eating utensils are plastic encased in cellophane wrappers. They have an assortment of beverages including tea, coffee, juice and fountain sodas. This place really is a "hidden treasure!" about 3 miles off I85 North on Gate Two Road at marker #189 (I think)!! Bring an empty stomach and they will surely "fill it up for you!" Very friendly staff & servers!! I have "NEVER" had anything I did not like! And by the way, they also have desserts but I have never tried any of those. Never thought I would have room for it after eating the meal! Just can't say enough good things about "The Home Plate!"PS: There's also a Home Plate Restaurant at 3327 Wake Forest Hwy. in Durham!!

Old South Restaurant

My parents treated me to dinner at Old South Restaurant on a Friday evening to celebrate my birthday. I ordered a 2 item seafood combination platter. I chose grilled shrimp and fried clam strips. The grilled shrimp was about medium size and it was marinated or perhaps seasoned. The clam strips were cooked perfectly as sometimes they can have a rubber-like texture, but not these. As side items, I had cole slaw and French fries. I wish a baked potato was an option on the side items menu without paying anything extra. Hush puppies to round out the meal, which was delicious! I took some grilled shrimp and cole slaw home with me in a to go box.The service was excellent as our waitress did a great job waiting on the 3 of us.This restaurant is a much better option than Cracker Barrel. Breakfast items on the menu are offered any time of the day. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. Also, it's conveniently located off I-85 at the N.C. Highway 56 interchange in Butner.
