Sevnica Castle

Reviewed By Miha P - Maribor, Slovenia

Renaissance castle is high above the city. You can visit the building with local museum and the garden with some old trees. Locals know also Lutrovska klet, a building with some frescoes. In the castle you will see inner yard and some different collections. Some rooms with fresco paintings of Gardens and Fountains (four seasons) are the main attraction in the building. There is a fine view from the entrance steps – to the Sava valley and houses under the castle. You can make a trip from Sevnica to Brestanica and Krško and visit some more castle and museums. There are less tourists than in other parts of Slovenia; it means that people have more time for visitors.

Visited whilst staying at sister hotel Castle Otocec. Although they are related and booked treatments for us and there is free entry no-one told us that they don't supply towels (even though there was a large stack on view). Indoor pools full of children, floors very slippery. But the outdoor pool was nice and there is a little café right by it. Just a shame about having no towel! The woodland setting is lovely.
Had a pain relief mud wrap massage which was excellent.

Local museum in Valvasor's house has fine location near the Sava river and near the local church. You can easily walk through in an hour or so and learn about local history, some important locals and their work (boatmen, trading, crafts, workshops). It is a fine, modern presentation and you will know much more about the small town after the visit.

Church in the eastern corner of the village was closed during my visit. It was possible to walk around and to look at the older presbytery, bigger nave and at bell tower. Upper part of the tower is from 19. century. Church is dedicated to St. Florian, popular protector against the fire.

Main or parish church stands in the eastern part of Sevnica, just under the castle. It was build in the last years of 19. century and decorated before 1910. Outside it is more or less boring. You can walk around building with a transept and a belltower near the entrance on the western side. Inner space is pleasant, decorated with frescoes (O. Bierti) and altars. Church is open each day for the morning mass.
