Kanna Kombuis

Reviewed By André M

I discovered Kanna Kombuis restaurant on tripadvisor, and as I was looking for a venue to host a dinner party in Ladismith, I thought it's the perfect venue!
I contacted that owner and chef JP a few months earlier, and he was extremely accommodating and hospitable. JP is in fact a seasoned professional and this is evident in the quality of his cuisine (all of our almost 20 guests couldn't stop complimenting his food, especially the super tender lamb shanks and the very generous malva Pudding/desert). I want to add that JP is very honest and thus respectable, I wouldn't hesitate recommending his restaurant to anyone.
The restaurant itself has a very laid back Karoo feel to it, but it's easy to tell that a lot of thought went into the decor and ambiance. To me, Kanna Kombuis is much more than just a restaurant, it is in fact a restaurant with an adjoining Deli, they stock lots of locally produced goods for sale such as jams, seasoning, cakes, sweet treats and of course a range of homemade (and delicious) biltong varieties. They also stock fruits and vegetables for sale.
I cannot wait to visit this restaurant again, and I do believe that it is underrated for the amazing quality that they cook up. The restaurant doesn't try to be pretentious, and therefore I think one shouldn't set unrealistic expectations when visiting Kanna Kombuis. Instead expect genuinely warm Karoo hospitality with good homemade food at very reasonable and honest prices!

What a wonderful dining experience we had when visiting Algerynskraal Padstal on the Route 62 between Ladismith and Barrydale. Friendly and helpful management and staff. Interior is delightfully decorated with a blend between old farmhouse and new furnishings. The menu offers a wide variety of mouth-watering options at most affordable rates. After a appetizing starter we enjoyed a wonderful traditional meal. (Homemade chickenpie/ baked potato wedges / sweet potato/ green salad etc.)
We left just enough space for dessert which consisted of a delicious home-baked apple pie served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
We can surely recommend Algerynskraal as a must stop when traveling on Route62 .

Route 62 Coffee Shoppe

Having driven up from Cape Town with a couple of other stops we needed a coffee and a wee fairly desperately, we found the Route 62 Cafe. A really nice little coffee shop/restaurant serving lovely coffee and very good food. Attached is a small shop that sells the local Ladysmith cheese. And very good it is too. Always worth a stop and shop.

Apologies - we are closed during the Winter season.

Having entered Ladismith unexpectedly while exploring a dirt road we were rather lost - tired - hot and thirsty. Having driven around and not fancying anything we saw in the main street, we turned off to a side street and there was our oasis! The welcome was great - it was cool, clean, interesting with numerous small antiques and the simple food offered (quiche) was delicious. So were the drinks. Not the place for a big hearty meal but perfect for what we wanted We would call again if passing through.
