Beautiful hike through evergreens. Fairly vertical climb. Would absolutely not recommend for dogs off leash or small children as their are some deadly dangerous drop offs.Lovely clear water creek for dogs to swim in at the base..

Roberts Memorial Provincial Park

You couldn't spend a whole morning here, but if driving in the area it is worth a stop. Arriving at the sea there are interesting rock formations, and great views across the bay. On our visit we think there were some locals fishing illegally for crabs, they were catching very small ones. Several benches to sit on.

Ladysmith Maritime Society

Reviewed By Stan A - Vancouver, Canada

This very well run boaters haven was a surprise. We have boated all over the U S San Juan Islands and The Canadian Gulf Islands and have never been in to Cowichan Bay. The docks are in good shape and easy to access and will accommodate large boats . There is a coffee shop snack bar on the float and the showers and wash rooms are immaculate and new . The town is a short walk and the supermarket is close and they provide a ride back for shoppers . The town is very old and interesting .
A good stop over

Heart Lake Trail

Reviewed By BroadenYrHorizons - Nanaimo, Canada

My friend and I started our hike to Heart Lake by walking up the left side of the Holland Creek Trail from the parking lot on Dogwood Drive behind Coronation Mall in Ladysmith. Hikers also have the option of hiking in from Ryan Place in the southern subdivision of Ladysmith, but going up Holland Creek offers more pleasant hiking through some large trees and alongside a rushing mountain creek. The trails are well marked, and hikers can pick up area/trail maps at several points along the trail at official trail map signs. Hikers who find they are tired at the top of the Holland Creek trail can cross over a small bridge and go down the other side. Hikers heading further up the mountain to Heart Lake or Stocking Lake cross the bridge and look for the trail marker to their left. Up to this point hikers have a mild to moderate hike. Once hikers hit the stone stairs to the actual Heart Lake trail the going gets tougher. It is a steep scramble and hikers would be advised to carry walking poles or ensure they are fit enough for the challenge. The view and the visit to the peaceful lake are worth it, however, Don't miss the viewpoint, as it gives spectacular vistas of Ladysmith Harbour, the Shell Beach mini peninsula, and surrounding geographic features. We hiked during an overcast day, and were happy about that as it kept us cooler. Take plenty of water and drinks if you hike on a hot day. Make sure to pack a lunch to enjoy once you reach Heart Lake. The lake water on the day we visited was warmer than the air, which was a bit breezy, so those brave enough could swim. Our entire hike, with stops to take breathers, enjoy the sights, and have lunch, took about five hours. I estimate the hike to have been about 8 km round trip. More adventurous hikers can continue on the trail around the lake on a 6.4 km loop or head off on a connecting trail to Stocking Lake.

Waterfront Gallery

Reviewed By Kevin P

We stopped here and were completely amazed at the artists and art that was being produced and displayed here. There were some excellent pieces that had been adjudicated and were being offered for sale. They ranged from native art to abstract paintings to glass and linen pieces. I am not an art aficionado but I was even able to find something that appealed to my senses. It should be on your list of stops when visiting the area.
