Great Views of an Atmospheric Medieval Village

Reviewed By ndser

We stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria de Alquezar for 1-night in late May (€99). Although we are over half way through a 9-week road trip through Spain and have seen many cities and villages, none have been as beautiful and atmospheric as Alquezar – if it is not on your list, put it there. Simply stated, it is the epitome of a medieval village – great views of the gorge & castle, and you can wander ancient streets like few others. The hotel is at the entrance to the village – not the traffic circle with the blocked road that directs you to an absurdly distant parking lot. Drive past the barricade into the village where there is plenty of free parking just before the hotel (if not, spaces will clear when the day trippers leave). We had a double room with a small balcony with a view of the castle & valley. The room was a bit small, but nicely decorated & modern, with a white motif that enhanced the space. The bed was large, with a small table on one side, a chair with a small table on the other. There was a large closet, a tiny ceiling-mounted TV, but no safe or mini-refrigerator. The balcony was small, but enough room for the chair and a pillow seat to admire the spectacular castle view. The bathroom was reasonable in size, with a single sink and tiny vanity but a very nice shower. Breakfast was basic, with scrambled eggs, bacon, and a small assortment of cold cuts, bread and pastries. Overall, a comfortable hotel in an absolutely beautiful medieval mountain village at a great price. Why wouldn't you stay here?

Hotel Boutique Maribel

One finds the HOTEL MARIBEL in Calle Arrabal, next to the beginning of the village of Alquézar’s main street. This is one of the most outstanding and interesting villages in Aragon, both for its architecture and medieval design as well as being situated in the spectacular countryside of the National Park of the Sierra de Guara. Above the village and presiding over it with singular beauty is the collegiate church built in the 16th century, and its castle of Moorish origins (declared to be an historic and artistic monument in 1931 while the centre around it was so declared in 1982).The hotel building integrates with the village and the construction is typical and traditional to the Somontano area. The front of the house has a façade of semi-circular arches which are surrounded by a framework of carefully worked stone characteristic of the area. Its upper floors are made of hand-made bricks and coverings of pigmented plaster carried out by artisans. The building is finished off with arched and rebated sections in the form of suntraps, protected by an overhanging soffit made of good wood-carving pieces. The façade is finished off with forged iron making the whole building singularly attractive. The spaces conceived in the interior of the hotel are situated around the staircase and patio: on the ground floor are the communal areas such as; reception, dining-room, lounge and café, while on the upper floors there are the ample rooms each with its own different atmosphere. The old masonry, the plaster and the selected finishes, the uneven ceilings, the cylindrical beams and the solid parquet flooring in noble woods, give the interior spaces and corners a feeling of charm, inviting one to enjoy it all. Photos of the communal areas are shown in the following section. If you wish to enlarge the photo, just click on it.

This is a beautiful hotel.

When we arrived at Alquezar, the first glimpse of the town was as we came round a corner from one of the “out of town” car parks, and it is a ruggedly stunning looking place. We found the hotel and the hotel parking easily, and the latter is very spacious and secure. The hotel fully lives up to the “boutique” in its title and is very smart indeed. Our room (201) is beautiful and is a mixture of attractive brickwork, wooden beams and plain, pastel coloured walls. The decor and furnishing is exquisite, and the en-suite is stylishly modern. Breakfast at Hotel Mirabel was just as exquisite as everything else about this hotel. Freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh fruit, good quality ham and cheese, a courgette tortilla, toast, croissants and coffee. This is a to class hotel and the service has been lovely.

Hotel Castillo de Alquezar

Hotel Castillo is placed in the heart of the medieval village of Alquezar. The building in which the hotel lays down was first a traditional house, and was restored and refurbished in 2013 to become the unique and splendid hotel it is today, preserving the traditional style so our guests enjoy the total immersion and the complete small-town experience. Our hotel only counts with 8 rooms, each of them unique and different from each other, combining modern, rustic and classic styles to offer a realxing and nice stay together with fantastic views of the town. Each of our rooms is named after a different olive variety from the area. All in all, a very calid and romantic environment to enjoy the village, its surrondings and have a wonderfun and unforgettable experience. For its convenient location, the hotel does not offer private parking spaces, however, the village does have several parking lots free of charge and well-signaled, which are only less than 5 minutes away from the hotel. It is also possible to drive the car up to the hotel to unluggage, in which case we would provide directions to the parking lot.

We stayed at Hotel Castillo on the last leg of our honeymoon, and it was by far our favorite lodging. The hotel has been recently renovated and is modern and clean while retaining all of its history and charm. There are great extras in the room, like a jacuzzi and a great sound system. The owners are kind and generous with their recommendations for restaurants and hikes.
