The perfect ryokan in Kanazawa

When looking to stay in Kanazawa, one would be hard pressed to find a more perfect place than Sumiyoshiya. The location is great, as it is very close to both the Omi-Cho Market, and the Kanazawa Castle Park. We spent two nights at this ryokan and could not have been happier! Mie Sumi was the consumate hostess! When asked for extra water in the room, recommendations for a shushi restaurant, arranging for taxis, all was taken care of in a matter of minutes. She even provided us with the name and location of the where to find the wonderful tea sweets served in our room. The room (#2) was spacious and immaculate. The dinner (served in our room) was outstanding! Crab, grilled fish, sushimi, shrimp, and clear soup with clam were all delicious. We could not have asked for a more wonderful meal! While Kanazawa was a bit quiet (mid-June, Tues-Thurs) we found plenty to do around town, and will make a return visit in November. When we do, we plan to stay at Sumiyoshiya once again.

Overpriced and out of date

Reviewed By Wanderer6

I had great hopes for this place. Sadly they were dashed. The inn is long overdue for an update, especially the bathrooms - limited to a small toilet and sink - that were last fitted out in the late 1970s. Showering means a trip to the onsen. Admittedly, that’s the main attraction of the inn, but, it is preferred to be able to get ready in the morning using your own facilities. Furthermore, the futons have seen better days and are wafer thin, just like the towels! Consequently, it’s not particularly relaxing or indulgent experience. All this wouldn’t be so bad if the price of staying here was reflective of the conditions. For $500 (plus drinks at dinner), you expect a lot more frills. Not all is negative, the staff are welcoming and the grounds have charm.

All round great ryokan

Reviewed By Jasonmoofang

We had a great stay. In just about everything we learnt to expect from a ryokan, Kanaya delivered excellently and sometimes exceptionally. The added spice of the men's shared bath being the model for the shared bath in the anime series "Hanasaku Iroha" also helped make our stay more unforgettable. The ryokan is only a short walk from the Yuwaku Onsen bus stop, which can be access by bus from Kanazawa station. We arrived on a chilly afternoon and were promptly and cordially shown to our room. Our waittress/attendant gamely sought to explain to our mostly english-speaking group the things in our room and the locations of the bath and dining areas, and was also helpful enough, on seeing my height, to bring me a larger yukata size. We never used the private rented bath (which had it's own lovely little hut separate from the main building), but the shared bath was all kinds of great. As noted, fans of the anime series "Hanasaku Iroha" would recognize the indoor area as being identical to the one in Kissuiso. The outdoor open-air onsen bath was a little on the small side, but we were there during an off period and so often had it all to ourselves. It was flanked by a nice little garden on one side with the hills opposite the ryokan visible on the other - providing a great view alongside a relaxing dip. The rest area immediately outside the bath area perhaps deserves special mention for being quite pretty and comfortable, while also featuring a nice table-tennis court as well as a dispenser of chilled, drinkable onsen water (!). We were able to pass a wet and gloomy afternoon playing some fun table tennis here. We stayed in the middle of winter, and the food they served at this period appeared to revolve around seafood and beef. They were delicious. The seafood in particular probably deserves special mention. We got dishes with various types of clams, snails (I think), sea cucumbers and even crabs as well as fish both cooked and raw, and they were fresh in a way you could almost never get in Tokyo. All throughout, we were shown the high standard of hospitality typical of ryokans in Japan. The staff who put our shoes away noticed how wet mine were due to the rain and quietly put them in the dryer so that they were warm and comfortable for me the next day. Upon finding out our next destination during checkout (which was Takayama), the front desk staff also managed to quickly grab us some helpful transportation information. Our waitress who served us for the duration of the stay walked with us a little in the cold snow until we were all the way outside the ryokan's grounds. All little gestures, but they add up to a great feeling of warmth and care. If I had to really nitpick a flaw, I'd say Kanaya lacked any kind of true spark or wow factor. It might be asking for too much really, but I've been blown away before by things like breathtakingly beautiful gardens and particularly sublime onsen experiences. Kanaya did not achieve anything of that sort for me, though it nevertheless left me a great and comfortable memory.
