The Island Inn

The Island Inn sits atop a bluff looking west over Monhegan harbor toward the ocean and in the evening it provides a perfect location to view the dramatic sunsets and the magnificent colors that accompany them.

Absolutely lovely!

My family of four (our children are adults) stayed for two nights in mid-August at the Island Inn. It was absolutely wonderful. The staff were great, and the breakfast was so tasty with great service. The rocking chairs on the porch (and the Adirondack chairs in the yard below the porch) overlooking the harbor were such a wonderful place to hang out and read a good book. The location of the hotel can't be beat-literally a 2 minute walk from the harbor. Our rooms were very small, but we knew that going into it, and they were very nice. This is an old inn, and we knew that and thus it more than exceeded our expectations. The room for my two (adult) children had a shared bathroom, but our room did so they just used ours. (The hotel kindly made sure our rooms were near each other.) The rooms did not have views of the harbor but I thought (correctly, it turned out) that we would prefer to sit in the rocking chairs than be air our room. We did dinner one night at the Island Inn. Although somewhat pricy, the dinner was absolutely delicious and definitely worth the money. If I didn't live so far away (8-9 hour drive plus ferry ride), I would be back at the Island Inn next summer.

A bit rustic, kind of like the island

Reviewed By william k

The Harbor House is very close to the ferry dock, which is good. It is across the "street"(gravel drive) from the Island Inn which offers an excellent restaurant. The Harbor House is well maintained, though a little on the rustic side. We had a "private" bathroom, which we reached by walking down the hall. Queen bed was reasonably comfortable. Room was small. Common areas had old/worn furniture. The caretaker/cook/cleaner/hospitality person John is very nice and cooks an excellent breakfast. I suppose everything is expensive these days. At the price, I guess we expected a more updated experience. But then, it's Monhegan Island, right? Lucky they have electricity now.

If This Were On the Mainland, It Would Be a Motel 8 (at Best)

Simply no concern for the guest experience, and no pride in the place. The problem is that they have a "built in" audience, so it doesn't matter if they don't make the stay comfortable. 1. "Prison-sized" bars of soap. Literally, cannot hold them without them slipping out. SO stingy. 2. NO shampoo. 3. No room service. 4. Crappiest toilet paper imaginable. 5. Non-functional A/C. 6. Most uncomfortable pullout bed AND couch possible (so cheap). 7. All substandard finishes, save for the charm of the woodwork, etc. 8. THE WORST OF ALL: NON-FUNCTIONAL WI-FI 99% of the time. Other network available, but not allowed to go on it. 9. Lousy breakfast food. 10. Extremely overpriced for what you get. 11. In the "real world," this would be equivalent to MAYBE a Motel 8, and probably not even that good.

The Cracked Mug Bed & Breakfast Guest House

A wonderful place to stay

Reviewed By BennyWA

We loved our time at The Cracked Mug! Melanie is a fantastic and friendly host with endless information of the island, suggestions of how to maximize your time, and is warm and welcoming from the second you step through the door. We were only able to stay for one night but she stuffed us with tasty baked goods throughout the day and served a four-course breakfast on the morning of our departure. My wife has celiacs and Melanie really went above and beyond to prepare safe and delicious food. The house is centrally located and has a nice deck with a beautiful view of the harbor and Manana island. The house was fantastic and everything we expected, but Melanie made the experience truly wonderful.

Tribler Cottage

Monhegan Island, ten miles off the Maine coast. Woods, cliffs, trails, and a small village. A haven for those seeking quiet and natural beauty. Two large apartments in a quiet house - for quiet people: May, June, September, and October - $145 a night (three-night minimum); $980 a week. July and August - $160 a night (three-night minimum); $1085 a week.

Hillside Apt at Tribler has been "home away from home" for decades . . . not now . . .

Reviewed By Robert H

Hosts' newfound hypersensitivity to "sound transmission" apparently precludes normal human conversation. We (again I say, guests for decades--and, I thought, genuinely friends--own a couple of Richard's beautiful photographs) are "senior citizens," not rollicking college students. During this most recent five-night stay, we were on tenterhooks. Love the Island. Never again Tribler. Sad.
