Top 6 Bed and Breakfast Inns in Kansas City, United States

April 21, 2023 Natalie Tallman

The home of swing and bebop for some, "The City of Fountains" to others, Kansas City is different things to different people. Music enthusiasts are drawn to the jazz clubs and old haunts of famous musicians such as Charlie Parker and Count Basie. With more fountains than Rome, there is ample opportunity for scenic strolling from fountain to fountain. Stop along the way to discover interesting neighborhoods and browse through eclectic shops. Families are particularly attracted to the city because of its child-friendly events and venues. Science City features hands-on exhibits including a mock television studio where kids can deliver a weather forecast, while the Zoo houses impressive African and Australian exhibits plus an IMAX Theater. The city's museums cover everything from the history of jazz music to a celebration of African American baseball players. Once a trading post for pioneers heading to the Western United States, today Kansas City is a burgeoning metropolis with activities and attractions for visitors of all ages and interests.

Lovely Autumn Stay

Southmoreland is lovely and the perfect size and location for a stay near the plaza and art museum. Every area appears to be thoughtfully done, from the bedrooms to the outdoor sitting areas. I had been told to expect a wonderful bread for breakfast, but was pleasantly surprised by variety of items from which to choose - scones, bread, overnight oats, fruit, and of course coffee and tea. It was a great start to each morning, especially as we sat and watched the morning light come up on the garden. It is a lovely place to stay!

Ideal getaway in an historic neighborhood

Reviewed By Bookmom17

The 1812 Overture is an absolute gem in the Westside/Crossroads area! We did a mini staycation for our anniversary and stayed in the Victoria room. It was comfortable and cozy, with huge windows overlooking the city. I was a little concerned that there would be a lot of highway noise due to the proximity to I-35 but it was plenty quiet. Our innkeeper took the time to explain the history of the home and the neighborhood, which was great fun for two history buffs. Breakfast of super yummy omelets was served in our room but we also could have eaten outside. This would be a marvelous location to stay when visiting KC because it’s walking distance to many attractions and restaurants and a quick streetcar ride to many more. Since we’re local, we drove, and street parking was ample, but you wouldn’t necessarily even need a car depending on what all you were planning to do in KC. We would highly recommend to anyone wanting a unique and relaxing getaway! Thank you for a lovely visit!

The Truitt

Hidden Gem Next to KC's Finest Art

Reviewed By sflmom111

My husband and I went up to visit our daughter, who is a student at Kansas City Art Institute. We like to try out unique hotels, B&B's and AirBnB's whenever we can. I came across The Truitt on a list of unique hotels in KC. And since it was so close (1/2 block) from KCAI, we decided to give it a try. We're so thrilled that we did. The property is absolutely beautiful, both outside and throughout. The common spaces are decorated with different "themes" and amazing artwork. Our room was probably one of the most beautiful rooms we have ever stayed in. We booked the downstairs carriage house room, which was a 2 room suite with a sitting room separated by heavy, velvet drapes from a large bedroom and a beautiful bathroom. The art in our room (even in the bathroom) was just as impressive as in the rest of the hotel. The free amenities included 2 bottles of water and a box of 2 yummy, local, gourmet chocolates. In the main house, they set up bar with coffee and little madeleine cakes. All of the furniture in our room was well appointed and comfortable. Outside of our room, at the back of the main house, is a lovely, relaxing little sitting area that is shaded by all of the lush trees and foliage, accompanied by the trickling of a fountain, great music and twinkle lights at night. I almost wanted to spend more time out there than in our room. BONUS: They have free parking in the back, as well as plenty of street parking nearby. One of the best things for us is that The Truitt is literally 1/2 a block from the KCAI campus. In addition, there are 2 world class museums on either side of the campus (The Nelson-Atkins and The Kemper), both of which I highly recommend. The campus itself is beautiful and has lots of art, as well. Plus it is all within walking distance of Country Club Plaza, which has a great selection of shops and restaurants (do not miss Jack Stacks for barbecue or Chuy's for Mexican). Our entire experience was such a pleasure; we can't wait to go back. Our daughter still has 3 years left of school, so we're looking forward to many more stays at The Truitt.

Oak Street Mansion

Interested in staying somewhere unique, high class, and yet central to all that KC has to offer? Look no further! You are at the epicenter of culture: split between the Nelson Atkins & Kemper Art Museums, not to mention the Kansas City Art Institute. The mansion is minutes away from the Country Club Plaza, Westport and Brookside. Upon entering the space, guests are immediately greeted by a grand staircase and stunning entry to this professionally decorated and curated home. The staircase also features a large window seat between the first and second floor. Flanking the entryway are the formal dining room & living room, which opens to an enormous sunroom overlooking the gardens & gazebo. The dining room seats 8, while the enormous living room features multiple couches, comfy armchairs, a fireplace, and a grand piano!

Beautiful facility, thoughtlessly administered.

We were in the left half or the carriage house, a separate structure behind the main hotel. It is very pretty and spacious, with a fridge and sink in the living room downstairs and a bedroom and bath upstairs. After we settled in, we could not leave the building because the door would not lock and the staff did not answer our calls or emails for hours. We wasted quite a bit of time standing by the door helplessly fussing with the electronic push-button lock .Eventually, we had to just abandon our stuff in the unlocked building in order to join a family gathering. The staff claimed their phones were down, but that does not excuse not checking the emails! At any rate, after a few hours, the staff called and explained that the deadbolt did not align properly, and it was necessary to pull up on the door handle while simultaneously pressing the correct button on the electronic panel. Although this was known to them, there was no hint of instruction about it in the room. The only working lighting in the bedroom was the absolutely blaring overhead lights--who would outfit a hotel room with lighting almost as bright as surgery lamps? The bedside lamp was broken, so we had to use the painful overhead lights and get out of bed to turn them off before napping. The staff eventually came by to lock the door and replace the side lamp in our absence. We were greeted the next morning at 7:30 AM by a power mower directly underneath our window caring for the mansion lawn. When we tried use the wireless, the password was nowhere to be found. Again there was a delay, in communication, and when the staff finally answered, they insisted--snidely--that the wireless password was on a sheet by the door. It was not. My girlfriend went so far as to photograph the door area to prove this to them. It turns out an instruction sheet was supposed to be there but was missing. (This sheet did not, however, reveal the secret of securing your possessions in a locked building). The staff later emailed (not called) to apologize for their rudeness on the phone. The kitchen has a fork and a knife, but no spoon, even though there is a coffee machine and creamer there. It also has dish soap but no sponge with which to use it. We wound up using a black bath towel instead. The large bathroom has an enormous shower with no curtain or nonstick mat on the slick tile floor. I had to walk very gingerly for safety. My girlfriend called to ask for a couple more decaf coffee slugs, explaining that she drank caf and I decaf. Incredibly, the staff resisted, but finally consented to bring more coffee. When we returned from an excursion, we found the staff had added a large number of decafs, but no more caf. She had to buy caf at a grocery store in the morning, This is all too bad because it is a pretty facility in a great location. We hope the management will take this review to heart and make a few changes to make this lodging functional for human beings visiting Kansas City.
