Alys' Restaurant

We visited Alys' while on vacation after reading about it on TA. I called for a reservation a couple days ahead for a Monday, but it's probably harder to reserve for the weekend. It's in a cute old house on a side street in La Veta. We were able to park out front. There was a large party there that night so it slowed everything down quite a bit, but we were in no hurry. Our dinners were wonderful, I started with a delicious soup with 3 kinds of sausage in it, then rack of lamb, mashed potatoes and veggie. It was one of the best racks of lamb I've ever had and the mashed potatoes were amazing. Alys said they have boursin cheese in them. The wine list was very reasonably priced, Alys opens the wines and pours so you have a chance to chat a bit with this interesting woman.I didn't intend to have dessert but can't pass up creme brulee; it was perfect. Don't miss dining at Alys'!

Corners Diner

Old school diner with friendly service and home cooked meals. Serving great american regional breakfast and lunches like open-faced chili-burgers and the only Eggs Benedict in the county.

This little place could easily qualify for "Diners Drive Ins and Dives" with their Green Chili smothered burger! We were visiting with friends and the conversation turned to where to eat in Cuchara and LaVeta. Corners Diner was recommended by several people. DH asked if the chicken fried steak was hand breaded and the chef said it is one of very few things on the menu he doesn't make from scratch, but the gravy it's smothered with is homemade and really good if you're a fan of sausage gravy. DH decided to try it, and gives it a thumbs up. I was hoping to try the green chili smothered hash browns, but was unable to do so because not gluten free, darn it. Sandwich selections are served with fries, onion rings or side salad, along with several salad options, so lighter eaters or those looking for vegetarian options can find a good meal along with those who prefer the hearty diner-style food. The service was good and the interior was tidy other than the restroom door jambs and corners of the floor being a little grubby. Prices were very reasonable. We'll eat there again when visiting the area. My "very good" rating is based on comparison with similar style diners/cafes. Don't expect linen napkins and tablecloths, but do expect a hearty, tasty meal at a reasonable price.

One of our first stops upon our return this summer and even better than ever. Nice, ecletic selection of wines and craft beers, very nice charcuterie plate for a light meal, good entertainment several nights a week. Outdoor dining at its best - in the Colorado mountains!

La Veta Inn

Reviewed By Sylvia A

The food at the Inn had never been very good in the past, but we decided to try it again as their were few options available in the town. We were pleasantly surprised at how good our meals were. The hamburger was excellent, cooked perfectly and very juicy. The 3 Cheese Bacon Ditalini was like having a very rich macaroni and cheese with fried chicken on the top. It was not what I had expected but found it to be delicious. It was so filling that I took half of it home. The weather was not such that we could be on the patio which was a shame as it is one of the nicest patios we have encountered. So glad to see that things are looking up for the Inn. We would eat there again.

We have been there several times and the food and staff are great. I got the Hump Day special today. Pulled pork sandwich with Cole slaw on top, fries or potato salad, and shake for $10. Excellent!!
