Upon reading enthusiastic reviews of two El Pinar restaurants in a travel guide on beaches, wineries, and estancias in Uruguay, we decided to try them both. This was the second one. The setting, on the end of a road along side Arroyo Pando, near where it empties into the great estuary of the Rio de la Plata, with amazing white sand dunes on a sunny Valentine´s Day in February (think summer all you Northern Hemisphere types), in a charming rustic building, led us to salivate in anticipation of a great meal and celebration with our friends. Alas, it was not to be.When we arrived there were only two other tables occupied in this large restaurant. Still, it took a very long time before a waitress finally presented menus. I took quite a lot longer for a serving of unheated, little white buns and a miniscule dish of some sort of salmon/mayonnaise purée to appear as a starter. (With a mandatory cover charge of 90 pesos per person for cubiertos, this was not much of an offering!) In the end, it was okay, because the bread left much to be desired and the purée was nothing remarkable. We made our orders. Two ordered gazpacho starters; two ordered no starters. The gazpacho was okay, but again not particularly remarkable. The three pieces of toast that accompanied it were the best of three selections of breads that would appear on the table in the course of our lunch, but they were grilled and burnt on the bottom. For main courses, two ordered the vegetarian sandwich. The portions were quite large, but the bread used in these sandwiches was the worst of the three types. It appeared to almost have a cake-like quality. Horrible! Both who chose this dish firstly discarded tops off the sandwich bits they ate, and both took home half their orders instead of eating them. The order that came home to our house was even rejected by two of our five dogs. One ordered a seafood sampler with dipping sauces. The picante sauce was not picante. The deep-fried seaweed balls were eventually not eaten. They appeared to be a bit greasy. The last dish was a chicken salad, containing jut two cherry tomatoes, sliced in half, three slices of grilled zucchini, two types of lettuce, a small amount of shredded carrot, and four slices of chicken. For dressing, a box of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper, and Tabasco sauce was presented. None of the dishes was in any way remarkable in presentation. Just food dumped onto a plate. None of the dishes was worth half the price asked for them The waitress took time to take the orders, spilled my beer when she delivered it, and had to be asked three times for the bill. At least she got the message that each couple wanted a separate bill. And, it was nice the water was served in glass bottles, rather than plastic, but those were the only good features of this less that wonderful Valentines Day experience. Nice views, but we really think they are wasted with mediocre, unremarkable, badly presented, overpriced food with crappy service. We will never return and we do not recommend you doing so either.

I stayed at Parador Grace 2 nights and enjoyed several amazing meals. Grace is a wonderful hostess, making sure you are comfortable and offering amazing food. Such a quiet and relaxing environment. I hope to begin and end every visit to Uruguay with a stay at Parador Grace.
