It comes alive by mid-afternoon, especially on weekdays, anxiously anticipating the stream of students and office workers going home and looking for a good, cheap meal. All of Ilocandia’s favorite foods are available here: Vigan empanada, okoy, bibingka, sinanglaw, and many others. The place has also become popular among tourists out for an afternoon stroll or shopping for souvenirs at nearby Calle Crisologo. Nice to experience quaint, rural Vigan cuisine here.

I seldom have fast food when I was in Singapore but during my 8 days in Philippines, I could not help eating these fast food because they are just everywhere in modern clean restaurants. I rather play safe eating the burger, the fried chicken in hygienic prepared kitchen than suffered from typhoid or diarrhea after consuming from poor hygienic street food. Though I knew that the sugar content in the soft drinks and the high sodium content in the burger, the crispy fried chicken and drumsticks are going to force up my high blood pressure, I still strayed my way into the fast food outlet. There are 3 Jollibee outlets in Vigan, one is located near the public market, another beside Plaza Salcedo and another at the highway near Quezon Avenue. My hotel Henady Inn was just a short walk away from this branch at the southern entrance into the city and I had my dinner here with value set of chicken and rice at 82 pesos. I had drunk all the flavors of the drinks offer by Jollibee. My first day breakfast was settled at the public market with local noodles. The plate of noodles cost just for 20 pesos was plain and non-appetizing compared to the crispy and hot chicken breast or drum stick. I irresistibly fell in love with the more palatable Filipino fast food and beside my dinner, my lunch was also settled at the outlet beside the public market. My wife found her blood sugar level increased after a week of sumptuous fast food and had her blame on the garbage food she had consumed. Surprising the rice offer per serving is quite small portion. I asked for top-up and it costs a hefty 25 pesos just to add another packet of rice. It is good as it means lesser intake of refined carbohydrate which is good for health. I am not sure the saturated oil used for frying the chicken, hydrogenated or unsaturated fats. Nevertheless, it would take sometime for me to detox my body and get rid of the excess fats and calories. We have a number of Macdonald, Burger King and KFC fast food outlets in Singapore but I heard there is one Jollibee outlet at Lucky Plaza. Jollibee seem to be exclusive among the Filipinos.

Terrible is the word: there is an open hall with a restaurant I didn’t try and a steep staircase leading to cubicles on a corridor. Mine had air conditioned (not all have) that made a terrible noise but couldn’t be switched off lest I choked. The room was just bed and a tiny table. I also had a bathroom that opened on the corridor too but when I realised it I locked the door from inside not to have guests.... it consisted of a toilet with a shower on top that apart from flooding everything couldn’t be turned off after use, I had to call the night watch to avoid drowning during the night.... A tiny wash-basin was in the corridor for common use so that you had to exit your room to brush your teeth. The light for the toilet is in the corridor, in common with another toilet, I couldn’t decide when to switch it on or off... I was given a bed sheet to make my bed, a towel, no soap, no toilet paper (I “stole” a roll in the corridor). They don’t take credit cards (cheap price but even too much for what you get), they want to be paid straight away and breakfast is not included (and there is nothing that could be called breakfast for that matter, the same menu is for all time) .Positive facts: the WiFi works well and the location is central. But it’s full of nice central hotels, choose another!Dear Ms. LauraThank you for your message. Sorry if we did not reach your criteria of an Inn. We just open our house for the guest We will consider your comment for our future enhancement. Thank you!
