Blue Bottle Cafe

We went with friends to the Blue Bottle on a Wednesday night, which is “local’s night”. That means that in addition to their regular menu, they have a prix fix menu, which is really a good deal. Many of the entrées on the regular menu are close to or over $30 and the prix fix menu is $32 for 3 courses. Three of us opted for the specials and were delighted with our salads and entrées. My husband ordered from the regular menu and was also quite pleased. However, the special dessert that two of us ordered was a disappointment. It was called “strawberry financier with coconut gelato and raspberry coulis”. The financier was hard as a rock and very difficult (almost impossible) to cut with spoon or fork! When I had asked what a financier was (before I ordered) the waitress went into details about how the egg yolks are whipped to a ribbon and the whites whipped to peaks and that the financier itself is similar to a meringue. Well, a meringue should be light and airy and this was anything but. It was more like a hockey puck! The dessert tasted good, but the cake itself was a disappointment. To bad to end a lovely meal that way!I have since looked up recipes for financiers and discovered that it is supposed to be a small cake (not hockey puck!) and only uses egg whites, not also yolks! It was a surprising and disappointing end to an otherwise excellent meal.Note: I would have given an "excellent" rating except that the dessert ruined the evening! Thanks for your feedback. I'm not sure what happened with the financier as it has been a long standing dessert on the menu, and I am so sorry that you didn't care for it. It sounds as if something was certainly amiss...There are no egg yolks in the cake, I will look into it a bit further and figure out the service person that gave you incorrect information. Fortunately, the menu changes weekly so it should narrow things down quickly as to who may have potentially overbaked the dessert and who doesn't know what they are serving. We appreciate your comments and hope to see you again soon. Desserts tonight are a pot de creme and a passion fruit tart, and I can personally attest to their being up to the standard that the chef has become known for. Please let me know when you are joining us for a future visit. I would love the opportunity to show you how great my financier can be...

My wife and I celebrated a wedding anniversary here as first time customers. We found a restaurant that was three quarters full on a Monday evening with enough patrons to keep the staff on the hop. Fellow eaters were people of all ages in fashionable casual dress. We had opted for dining inside rather than in a somewhat garage-like space that was open to the elements and our reservation snared a table near the kitchen door that allowed us to see the chefs at work and receive attentive service but not to be troubled by the passing waiters. Unexpectedly, a couple of starters appeared quickly on the table, served by the floor manager?. These were soon followed by a waiter apologizing for the unordered dishes but we decided to keep them and were informed that they would not be charged on the bill. This gesture reinforced our initial impression of a restaurant that does not take advantage of its customers but is quick to accept responsibility for gaffes. Our entrees arrived in due course and were ample, beautifully plated, well flavored and not overstuffed with carbs. Accompanied by a glass of pino and an Allagash white beer, they were just what was wanted. We also sampled some tea and split an Eton Mess dessert. The total came to $90. Not bad for a "special" occasion! We will certainly return.

Acacia is in Lawrenceville, NJ and across the main street from the well-regarded Lawrenceville School. Dining in the summer when school is on break gives the restaurant a relaxed, quiet and reseeved atmosphere. The menu is small but filled with exciting appetizers, salads, and entrees. We enjoyed the beet salad, crabcakes, porkchop and chocolate trifle. Prices are in the $20's and $30's for entrees. No wine list but you can bring your own bottles. Service was attentive.
