Reviews on Chinese food in Berkeley, California, United States. The counter-culture, flower power center of the 60s, bohemian Berkeley has evolved into a culinary and cultural travel scene. Shift into low gear and people-watch along quirky Telegraph Avenue while checking out the bookstores and cafes. After strolling through the UC Berkeley campus, the Berkeley Rose Garden and the Downtown Arts District, head into the hills for an outdoor adventure in Tilden Park or cruise down to the waterfront park, where the San Francisco skyline sparkles across the bay.

Peking duck, âDouble skin,â seafood soup - simply delicious, amazing food. Iâve never had Chinese food like this before. Flavorful, fresh, and light. My friends told me about this place a long time ago, and I finally got to go with them. They went early to stand in line before 5 pm, when they open for dinner (Saturday; they donât take reservations for small groups). We got a table, and we (well, they) ordered quickly - and the food was ready quickly too. Very efficient service. But the food is the highlight - simply wow. Beautiful space too - modern and spare. Full bar.

Great China reopened at 2190 Bancroft Way on the corner of Oxford in Berkeley two years after a fire destroyed their Kittredge St. location in 2012. It is only a block away from the original restaurant and has a more contemporary feeling without the crowded tables or any stairs that the original building had.The menu is similar to the original with many of the popular items still available. We often order the Double Skin and Peking Duck..... both are recommended. Other selections that we have tried are very good to excellent.Service is usually very good and attentive. The restaurant is well maintained and clean. It is a James Beard Outstanding Wine Program Nominee and a Michelin Bib Gourmand. This restaurant is one of our favorites in the East Bay... we sometimes travel from the South Bay just to eat at this restaurant.

This was one of my favorite restaurants when I first moved to the area in 2000. In the past 3-4 years, the prices have gone up, the portion size has gone down (my to go order containers are now half full instead of full), they count the number of shrimp you get in a dish and they have fallen to the standard of box restaurants of pouring on the salt. The dishes they make have wonderful and complex flavors, but now all I taste is salt. I wake up in the middle of the night needing to drink water. Their solution when you bring this to their attention is this: next time order each dish and say no or low sodium or salt.Itâs truly sad. This was one of my favorite restaurants to bring family, friends, and sometimes tour groups. Now I only go when I have a huge craving for Ghan Shao Lamb or Prawns a la Ching Hua.If they decide to listen to the public and increase their portion size ( Iâm fine with paying higher prices for quality), and reduce the sodium I would be happy to return and bring everyone with me!Please bring back the old Kirin!
