Unbelievable views of Mount Fuji, the ocean, and surrounding Mountains! There's a restaurant as well as free foot hot spring both facing Mount Fuji... breathtaking! Lots of short little easy trails with little things to see. A very short walk from the bus stop (10 minutes 170 yen from Izu-Nagaoka Station, no SUICA). We spent about an hour up top. The cable car is a bit scary but totally worth it! Highly recommend on a clear day!

Pretty decent waterfall about 15 minutes by car from Shuzenji. There are also buses that travel between the coast and Shuzenji stopping here if you use public transport. Free admission, free parking, short walk--good enough for a brief visit for those who are in the area.

The Nirayama Hansharo (reverberatory furnace) was built between 1854 and 1857 and only operated for 7 years. It's purpose was to cast cannons to be used in defensive positions as a means to intimidate the Western powers, or at least convince them that they couldn't colonize Japan as they had colonized much of Asia. The visitor center/museum that opened last year has various displays of artifacts and an excellent video that brings the site to life. There's no English available yet, but even without it one can pretty well get the gist of what's going on. Visitors then move on to the site itself. The chimneys are only 15.7 meters tall, but that must have seemed enormous to the local farmers back in the 1850s. There are signboards will illustrations of how the furnaces worked. Volunteer English guides are also available.
When you've finished exploring the furnace, be sure to climb the hill with the tea bushes to reach a look-out platform. Great views of the furnace site and the valley below. And if it's a clear day, Mt. Fuji is also visible.

土肥金山が、佐渡金山に次ぐ日本第２位の金山で、かつてはとても賑わっていたことを、この施設に入って初めて知りました。生憎の雨で観光できなかったため、この施設に立ち寄ったのですが、雨宿りにはちょうど良いと感じました。
I knew a fact that a gold mine in Sado was the biggest one in Japan and one in Toi was the second for the first time. This area used to be bustling thanks to this gold mine. The reason why I entered into this museum was not able to enjoy other sightseeing spots due to rain. I felt this was a good place in case of rainy day.

伊豆箱根鉄道で伊豆長岡下車、伊豆長岡から循環バスがでています。反射炉とセットでの見学をおすすめします。江戸時代を通じて代々この地の代官を勤めた江川家の住宅。母屋や蔵などが公開されています。とにかく母屋の土間の柱と梁、天井は見所です。よく今の時代までもったものです。江川家の歴史とあわせて、資料も豊富です。

Nice and peaceful short walk through a beautiful, quaint bamboo patch. They have a circular bamboo bench for relaxing in the middle of the patch.

After our disappointing visit to Awashima the day before, we weren't sure what to expect at Sea Paradise. It turned out to be much more lively though, with better-maintained exhibits, animals that performed their tricks well (if you're into that sort of thing) and actually some crowds - no ghost-town atmosphere at all. In fact, at one point I was surprised to see it was built in around 1977, it feels somewhat newer than that (although there's some obvious signs of age around).
Dolphin show was one of the more impressive that I've seen, particularly the lady Surfing on the back of dolphins and high jumping off their snouts. Between shows, it is possible and relatively cheap to take a small row boat ride in the dolphin pool and to pat them (my daughter tells me their skin feels like eggplant). The more adventurous can also be in the boat during one of the dolphin shows, which I've never seen at an aquarium before.
Other shows were similarly impressive and a bit unusual. For example there is an absolutely huge sea lion, who wasn't being entirely co-operative but eventually pulled off some surprising stunts considering how big he was. Disturbing on some level, but still compelling viewing.
There were some other random things the kids enjoyed, like Halloween dress up costumes to try on free and take photos of. Photos were also taken by the aquarium staff on entry and in the dolphin boat rides. We would have liked to have those, and the quality was good, but they were asking 1,000 yen each, which is absurd. We probably would have bought them at 500 yen each.
Penguins looked a bit sad, and some of the tank exhibits were not nearly as good as in world-class Aquariums, but for a small town location in Japan this ended up being surprisingly good overall. Food at the cafeteria was quick but not particularly good quality. On the other hand, jellyfish icecream served near the dolphin pool was really quite tasty!

The town was kind of built around this temple. It's a Buddhist temple and it's linked to the onsen nearby also the power struggle at the Kamakura Shoganate (1185 to 1333). It's a relatively small temple and you will enjoy a quiet afternoon walk in here and the nearby area.

Beautiful location. There is one café serving tea and coffee from plastic cups!!! And there is a souvenir shop. Plenty of parking though I suspect it is really busy on weekends and summer time. It was really quiet at 10am in the morning. The cape showcases itself to lovers and there would appear to be a wedding scene that can occur. Having said that, the walk out to the actual viewing points - there are 2 - delivers a spectacular Panorama. On a clear day, there are views of Fuji San. It's a tiny bit kitsch but well worth going for the scenery. There's a resident cat on the boardwalk which has it's own billboard!!!
