Bills, Shichirigahama

Casual dining from Sydney. Their popular menu includes scrambled eggs, ricotta hotcakes and dishes with fresh ingredients, which are appreciated as the "Best Breakfast in the World" created by Bill Granger. You definitely have to wait in line, but you can make a reservation for dinner.

This is the original Sangosho restaurant (honten) that started the whole franchise.
My wife and I have been fans of their boil in the bag 'Dry Curry' for a few years now but had never visited the place.
Finally the real thing!
We were very lucky, as it was 14:30 on a wednesday that we visited.
Empty car park and empty seats.
I hear there's a big queue during peak times.
Although we both had to have our dry curries, their popular dish is Beef Cutlet Curry.

Caraway

Reviewed By Pan-heera

Prior to our visit to Kamakura, one of our friends had suggested visiting a traditional style curry house for authentic Japanese Curry - apparently one of the specialties of Kamakura. We asked the very friendly and helpful tourism office for a curry house recommendation and they suggested Caraway. If you are vegetarian, do not bother, since the curry with egg options seem to come with chicken. However, if you are interested in trying authentic Japanese curry, try out Caraway.
The tourism office gave us great directions for finding the restaurant since we cannot read Japanese and as others have mentioned, there is not an English sign. I highly recommend visiting the tourism office in general - everyone there spoke great English and can give tips on a pleasant stay in Kamakura. The restaurant is located off the main shopping street in Kamakura. If you get lost, ask people and they will point you in the right direction.
The restaurant was empty when we arrived at 5:30 pm - we each ordered small portions of the quail egg and chicken curry dishes. The tourism office told us to ensure we ordered the small portions, since the portion sizes are enormous. The small portion was extremely generous and came with a side salad and a huge portion of rice. Each dish is around $7-8 USD, which is a great deal considering the amount of food. Service was friendly - perhaps it helps coming a bit earlier given its popularity. We seemed to beat the rush, because I saw locals being turned away once the restaurant got crowded.

Sangosho is located across from Shichirigahama beach and nearest to Shichirigahama Enoden station. The design of the restaurant is unmistakably Hawaiian and it is known for its large portions of curry. The anchovy spiced french fries are also tasty. This bigger of the two Sangosho restaurants is the second, the original is also in Shichirigahama, higher up on a hill in a quaint shopping plaza. They both have similar menu items. If you go for dinner or lunch on a nice day, you may have to wait in line - definitely have to wait on the weekends. The staff can be a hit and miss with rudeness. I have had extremes of both here, even on the same dining experience.
Know before you go
The restaurant has its own large parking lot
Doesn't seem as fancy as some of the other nearby restaurants with that Hawaiian look but still not ok with damp clothing or sandy feet.
If you have small kids,.some of the curry is rather spicy, check before you order.
The entrance is one level above the street at the top of a flight of stairs - not sure if they have an elevator hidden somewhere

I visited this place by the Ocean about four years ago, and it was a pleasure to return with friends, to find the young chefs as creative as ever, offering a variety of fashionable Italian (even Tuscan) dishes. We sampled their pickled antipasti, which were more inspired by Fusion, but with good raw ham and very good home-made bread. One bruschetta was offered with 'sausages', and they tasted authentically Tuscan, with aniseed and authentic flavour, but the chef confirmed they made them themselves. The risotto was perfect, the tagliolini ai porcini excellent. A wonderful experience in a very simpatica atmosphere. Well done! Ganbatte, neh.

My Japanese boyfriend always tells me that nothing could compare to the taste of fresh mochi, which can never be taken out of the country as they have to be eaten within a day. So his family took me to Chikara Mochi, where mochi are freshly made everyday.
I can't really describe how it tasted, except that it had an amazing softness to it. And the red bean paste sitting nicely on the top really complemented the beautiful taste of mochi.
Must-try if you are in Kamakura!

I storongly recommend this retaurant to the foreighn visitors. They serve you a good japanese foods and the price is very reasonable. Please enjoy lunch or dinner here.
