Yamabiko

We came at the recommendation of our ryokan. We were a bit worried that it was slightly out of the way, but it was definitely worth it. Not only was the soba delicious, but the tempura (yam, mushrooms) and pork/egg/rice bowl were also memorable. Overall, an authentic homestyle meal experience. We also purchased some new rice from their shop.

Bokunenjin

This place came at the recommendation of one of the local store holders that spoke a bit of English (my Japanese is embarrassingly non-existent).
I went there on a Friday night and was the little old lady's only customer. I ordered tempura soba from her photographic menu of only 6 dishes. This was super handy for someone who didn't speak Japanese!
She whipped all this up as well as giving me a couple of free little dishes of seaweed and some
Bamboo to keep me satiated until the soba was ready.
Dinner plus a beer and including tea was only 1500yen. A delicious bargain if you ask me!
A gorgeous little place, check it out if you find yourself here.

Beautiful scenery as you sit on the side of the pool dangling your feet in warm water. Food was ok, nothing extraordinary. No English menu and no staff spoke English. When trying to order lunch at 10:55, staff refused saying kitchen it's not open until 11:00. I offered to order and pay then wait on order. Staff refused, so I had to go to the end of the line and wait for 15 minutes to make it to the counter again and order. Why so inflexible? Being refused service created a stressful situation that could simply have been avoided by working together, not being so rigid about 5 minutes. Inflexible. 5 stars for beauty and creative business. 1 star for bad service and sad no English menu.
