Top 10 Specialty lodgings in West Virginia, United States

April 19, 2023 Natalie Tallman

As you would expect, The Mountain State displays rustic charm with dramatic river gorges, large limestone caverns and spectacular mountain views. West Virginia hosts outdoor enthusiasts and family vacationers looking for fresh-air activities and serene mountain atmosphere. If stimulating city holidays are your preference, Charleston combines warm hospitality with a lovely riverside location. A family-friendly destination, you’ll discover children’s theatre, river park recreation and popular Bridge Road for shopping and dining. Smaller towns blend outdoor adventure with quaint village atmospheres. Set between the New, Greenbrier and Bluestone Rivers, Hinton is an historic rail town filled with turn-of-the-century architecture and a host of water activities at its doorstep – rafting, fishing, kayaking and more. In the heart of West Virginia, Summersville is a “Mountain Water Playground.” Its lakeside location encourages outdoor recreation from swimming and boating to scuba diving and rafting. And history buffs can trace Civil War battles throughout the states historic sites and state parks. Hiking or horseback riding along trails through deep hardwood forests is another family favorite, especially when you stop for a picnic along a clear mountain stream.

We cycled the Greenbrier River Trail and this was our start and end point as we traveled to White Sulphur Springs on Amtrak and Howard's Creek Inn is a short distance from the train station. Easy check-in. Clean, comfortable. Great places to eat for breakfast and dinner just outside the door. We stayed in Room 101 and had no issues with noise. We loved the coffee maker and that the bathroom had a tub !

WORST hotel I’ve ever had

Reviewed By Chelsea102421

My fiancé & I came here with our dog to stay for 3 nights to attend a family funeral service. The pictures online look great but what a lie that was! First off you would think since I have a dog they would have me close to the outdoors to let my dog go potty. Nope, they stick us on the 2nd floor in the middle of everyone. I suck it up, we get into our room and it smells so gross. The dishwasher had dishes in it, the ice bucket was dirty and filled with water, there was dirty laundry from another guest on the floor, there was trash in the bed under the blankets, and the towels smelt like smoke. Good thing we brought some blankets with us so we used those instead of sleeping under god knows what. The first night I go to bring my dog out when it was getting dark, some guy from out of no where starts walking towards me. I turn and go to walk inside and I notice he’s walking faster and faster. From that moment on my fiancé brought the dog out. There were a bunch of creepy men just hanging around, very uncomfortable. Me and my fiancé left a day early because we did not want to stay there anymore, we didn’t even feel comfortable leaving our dog there so we took her everywhere with us. Will definitely not be returning there or WV in general! Don’t do it.

Very cheap and basic only one key to all the rooms so you have to open your door then return the key to the front desk that is just plain unsafe. Also a homeless guy sleeping in the hall outside my room when I woke up . Spend a few bucks more and stay somewhere else

Modern Nostalgic

My wife and I have had good luck with finding nice accommodations for groups through Airbnb, but when we are the only ones traveling, most choices are overkill just for a couple. The Billy Motel is a nice alternative to those who want to stay in a unique space that is in stark contrast to even the higher end, but bland, corporate motel alternatives. The Billy is currently a work in process. The improvements the owner has invested in the property are of good quality mixed with practical touches. We appreciated the shelfing, hooks, and fold-away dinner trays that maximized living space while allowing us to organize our belongings without cluttering the floor. During our stay, there was a number of people who stopped by wanting something to drink or eat from the dining room/bar, but alas, that space had just been demoed for something new and improved in the future. That was our only regret- we didn’t make it a couple weeks before to sample the original Ish kitchen.

Back to nature experience

This is a place to get away from it all and relax. It's out in the mountains and very scenic to walk the trails. The pools and hot tubs are good. Being naked in nature is about freedom, feeling like a kid again and relaxing, not sex. I have gone here for several years but am not a member. I've always found it inviting and met some interesting people. Sure, the food is not the best and I've always camped so I don't know about the resort accommodations. But I don't go to a clothing optional resort for the food or accommodations.

Barn With Inn

Great family stay

Reviewed By G9171DDdavidd

I am not a big fan of B&B because I find it creepy staying in someone else house that I do not know. However, this place is excellent. We rented both of the room in the barn and it was great. The rooms were very comfortable. The former horse stable has a huge walk-in shower with a rainfall shower head, ample seating space in the room but a very nice porch to enjoy the evening breeze and the sounds of the country and a great place to have coffee in the morning (coffeemaker in room). My daughter and granddaughter stayed in the upper room that used to be the hayloft. It has a large area for seating and space for meeting friends. We could look out of the windows of both units and see the barn animals which was a thrill for the 5 year old. Chatman allowed her to help feed the animals including hand feeding Cooper the pig. Needless to say she was in "hog heaven". Chatman is a fine cook and breakfast was good and ample. He also gave us some great info of local attractions including the Good Zoo. The zoo the perfect size for our granddaughter and her two cousins who live in WV. They had a great time and it was hard to pry them apart when it came time to leave. Emmy began to cry the night before we left because she didn't want to leave the farm and her new friends Dave the cat and Buddy Ray the dog. The next morning we had to promise to return within the next year before she would get in her car seat! So we will return and next time we will attend the dinner with Chatman and Harry at their supper club in Wellsburg. Overall it was a great experience and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Jennie's Bed and Breakfast

Jenny's B&B Parkersburg, WV

Reviewed By WestVirginiagirl123

I had an excellent stay. Jenny takes great pride in her home and pays attention to detail. The period house is located in the historic district and very well maintained. My room was tastefully decorated and the bed very comfortable. The towels were high end and there was a basket of everything imaginable in the bathroom including shaving cream and razors for men AND women, mousse, hairspray, Tums, shower bonnets, toothpaste and dental floss just to name a few. So thoughtful. Jenny was a great host. She knows how to make you feel welcome. I am a light breakfast eater so Jenny was gracious enough to charge less and even gave me military discount. The house is within walking distance of downtown and there is plenty of safe street parking. I would stay again if I am in the area again.

The place is amazing and in a great location for riding ATVs. The owners are awesome and treat you like family. They provide breakfast and dinner is available at a very minimal price and very delicious. If you want a great Atv riding experience, look no further the Eva’s. You won’t be disappointed. It’s very family friendly and there’s no other place like it, I promise, cause I’ve stayed at many places for Atv riding and they’re way above everyone else.
