Top 10 restaurants in Zgorzelec, Poland

August 5, 2017 Marianna Hollaway

Zgorzelec [zɡɔˈʐɛlɛt͡s] ( listen) (German: Görlitz, Upper Sorbian: Zhorjelc, Czech: Zhořelec) is a town in south-western Poland with 32,322 inhabitants (2012). It lies in Lower Silesian Voivodeship (from 1975–1998 it was in the former Jelenia Góra Voivodeship). It is the seat of Zgorzelec County, and also of the smaller district of Gmina Zgorzelec (although it is not part of the territory of the latter, as the town is an urban gmina in its own right). Zgorzelec is located on the Lusatian Neisse river, on the post-1945 Polish-German Neisse border adjoining the German town of Görlitz, of which it constituted the eastern part up to 1945.

We chose this place because we wanted an early dinner; they opened at 1730 when everywhere else opened at 1800. After this experience, I will choose it every time I return to this town. Staff was pleasant but professional, red house wine was good, and my dinner (garlic shrimp pasta) was one of the best I've had. I'm still trying to figure out all the flavors in the sauce. It was light but so tasty. Wine, water and pasta was only 12 Euro. Nice atmosphere, as well.

Very nice ancient architecture, affectionatedly restored, great atmosphere. The menu is German/European mainly, but they serve good international beef (e. g. Angus) and burgers, too. Good German beer and fine dishes. The wine list has to be improved a bit. The staff is very courteous. Prices are reasonable.

Very smart place with good food. They seem to be the best place in town as they were quite full and someone next to me said as much.

This is a wonderful place that I keep coming back to year after year. The peace, warmth and beautiful surroundings make for a perfect getaway. The Obermühle in-house brewery (situated directly above the aesthetic bar) produces an excellent beer, which, when served by local waiters, will give you the sensation on culture.
Great food! The kitchen uses mainly local vegetables and meat; I had a talk to the chef-cook and he told me, that they visit many of the producers of these ingredients. After a satisfying meal from the Obermühle, you should rent a boat and sail into the forrest and enjoy the peace.
The rooms are surprisingly neat, compared to what you often meet outside bigger cities. I enjoyed a room with a view to the lake, where the sound of rushing water was lulling me into rest.
I fully recommend the Obermühle for eating, drinking and sleeping for anyone!

Nice change from the ubiquitous Germany traditional meat fest - lots of choice ranging from vegan to vi mixed grill tandoori and different meats. Nice sauces, fresh spices, breads and a salad as complimentary side dish. Generous portions and friendly service. Mango liqueur on the house. Average prices. A pleasant alternative in Görlitz.

We were determined to try the Schlesisches Himmelreich (google it!) before leaving Görlitz and our Rick Steves guidebook recommended the Destille. We were not disappointed so perhaps this really is the best one in town?
Beef carpaccio to start was excellent, the pasta dish my wife had was good. Goosberry liquer afterwards delicious.
We arrived at 19:30 and were lucky to get a table, so Reservations are recommended - although it was half empty when we left.
The young guy servings us was professional but not especially friendly - should try smiling once in a while.

Afirmacja Club & Restaurant

Always good for a new culinary experience we ventured from our base in Görlitz across the river Neisse and, after getting directions from very friendly locals, finally found this place. They do need to do something to avoid potential patrons unfamiliar with the area just passing by. Set in a residential house, it is very easy to kiss and both, patrons and owners would miss out, the first on a very pleasant surprise and the latter on the revenue and promotion. The food is very good, tastefully arranged, and polish cousine, albeit at times quite basic, very palatable. And that's were the secret seems to lie. No overcomplicated attempts to create something new no matter what, just plain and simple food. Sorry, not plain, figure of speech, as the food was all but plain. The coffee was quite reasonable although traditionally Polish "brewed" in the cup, also called Turkish, but from very good beans. Overall very enjoyable, clean and extremely friendly with very good kitchen at embarrassingly low cost. 6 of 10 and sure a stop over again next time in Europe.

This beautiful, old, charming restaurant was great! Our first night in Germany was made perfect by dinner in this place. The cheerful chef was only outshined by the generous waiter/host for the evening. The ambience was old world, clean, happy, warm and open to enjoy. Wine and drink referrals were perfect, dinner suggestions were shared while conversation made us feel at home. Barrel vaulted ceilings, stone floors, enthusiastic staff, and delicious recipes make Da Vinci a destination to visit. Well trained, perfect manners, and a well served meal is one thing, patience for tourists and accurate recommendations for 4 different palates is a real winner! We closed the place down, the staff never rushed us or encouraged us to move along. So glad we have the opportunity to experience Da Vinci, an unexpected highlight but one we would recommend to everyone.

Bella Maggio Restaurant

Reviewed By Rene K - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This restaurant sits at the bank of the Neisse in the town of "Görlitz" (a pity that this city is divided by a borderline.) on the side of Poland and then suddenly the city is called Zgorzelec which does mean the same.
Back to the restaurant. I had a quick business lunch in this company and I enjoyed the polish food they served. The Zupa was fine and tasted well. The main dish was served fast and was very tasty.
Cost were, comparing to other parts of Europe, considerably low.
They have a Terrace outside, from there you have a lovely view on the Neisse and Görlitz, nice , renovated buildings.
They offer also rooms to stay, which I didn't use.
For food, give it a try when you are in the area!
