Daggaboer Farm Stall

Daggaboer Plaasstal (Farm stall) Cradock KarooFarms stall outside Cradock - about 10km outside Cradock on the N10 road to Addo / Port Elizabeth.

We needed some sustenance on the road and decided to try our luck at Daggaboer. On arrival, we were offered a taste of their homemade ginger beer (good) and lemonade (OK-ish) and then we ordered coffee and roosterkoek with biltong patè, cheese and jam.At R60 per roosterkoek, we were a bit floored, but ordered nevertheless. The roosterkoek was freshly baked and delicious, the moerkoffie, in an ancient coffee pot with its little strainer, reminiscent of days long past.
Fortunately, the weather was mild enough to sit out on the stoep, for trying to find a place to perch amongst all the clutter for sale, would have been a Mission!

True Living

A quaint restaurant and coffee shop situated right on the main route through the beautiful town of Cradock. We pride ourselves on excellent coffee and homemade soul food. A bakery where fresh artisan bread is available as well as a delicatessen section. True Living is also stocked with loads of local produce like knitwear, jams and mohair products.

Almost a year after we visited True Living, we returned on our way to the seaside. We were welcomed like long lost friends and enjoyed the most wonderful breakfast and lunch at True Living. The True Living team (Lani and Louzel) are now "celebs" as they appeared on the local Television program, "My Kitchen Rules", where they showed the rest of the country why Karoo lamb is so special. We hope to return soon, as True Living is exactly what the name says... True Living, True People.

Steers

Reviewed By JonB_SA - Johannesburg, South Africa

We stopped in Cradock on Sunday when all the recommended restaurants and coffee shops were closed - as was the beautiful looking Olive Schreiner Museum. Apart from the churches, the town was dead - and the sprawling graveyards were alive with litter. More litter even than the rest of town.... So apart from filling up with petrol, we thought we would not stop, and then we found Steers. Its a mass market fast food chain place, but was very clean, the food was well cooked and tasty enough, the staff were friendly and served us at the table, the main road setting is convenient with good streetside parking, and there is a pleasant fenced garden area as well. Unless you are religious or want to start a plastic recycling business, this may be the best thing in Cradock on a Sunday.

The Olde Maple Shed

Reviewed By Jilldutoit - Port Elizabeth, South Africa

This restaurant called "The Shed" occupies the venue previously trading as "Boerensjiek" - the Olde Maple Shed is still at the back of the property and Hebron Nursery is in the grounds. Its a delightful place to visit and we spent a lovely late afternoon here, sitting in the shade and making the most of the display of the pretty nursery plants.
The restaurant is just such a pleasant place - they make the most refreshing iced tea ( not too sweet like the shop-bought stuff) and their cakes are superb!

Such a great place! Ideal for quick coffees (which they roast themselves), dinner with friends and loved ones or even a business meeting.
Decor is very trendy, food is simply delicious and the staff are very friendly. Owners were very original and creative when they named the menu items...you’ll see what I mean when you visit them!
The pizzas have thin crusty bases and toppings are fresh and just yummy....plus they have free wifi (a bonus for any Karoo venue). Karoobrew is a DEFINITE MUST to visit when in Cradock!!

Vino Burgerbar And Deli

Reviewed By Jilldutoit - Port Elizabeth, South Africa

We needed something to quench our thirst and tried " Vino" although we were not looking for anything alcoholic so early in the day!
The interior of the restaurant was lovely and cool and we ordered chocolate milkshakes and then a couple of pancakes. The shakes were tasty but the pancakes were sublime - featherlight and not at all rubbery. At R5 per pancake these were winners.
I then got talking to the manager and found out that there had been a succession of restaurants on the property, which also housed Country Living.
Vino gives customers the added bonus of stocking cuts of meat, chicken and a variety of freezer meals - convenient if you are in a self-catering establisment. Other locally sourced deli products are available too.
Staying open til 10 over the weekend also offers folk more choice in eating venues for dinner.
They have free wi-fi here - drew a blank at the other restaurants we visited.
