Near the Hirosaki station and around the corner from the Toyoko Inn. Friendly, helpful staff helped me with selections. They a sheet of some of the dishes in English. Nice place for dinner.

Kikufuji Main Shop

The information lady suggested this restaurant for local food. It's tucked away in a little alley near Hirosaki park. I went just before closing time and they were very accommodating. I ordered the sake sampler and they chose 3 lovely sakes for me. I ordered the local dishes, a vegetarian soup (that was just okay), squid tentacle fritters (I love squid) and apple and scallop fritters (which were surprisingly delicious). The place was quiet when I was there. The ambience is typical Japanese izakaya. I recommend this place.

Every time, tempura lunch made me so happy. Good taste, low price, you can choose seasonal stuff. A bit far from Hirosaki station, but there is a parking lot.

Kafukutei

This place is a few blocks from Hirosaki park in a relatively quiet area. It's not hard to find - a lady hanging her laundry pointed me in the right direction. The service was friendly although they didn't speak English, they had a picture menu. The soba is apparently made with soy bean flour which makes it slightly softer. It was tasty but not a marked variation from the normal soba. The dessert was a deep fried soba flour coated red bean confection. It was interesting. The meal cost < $25 which is relatively inexpensive for Japan.

Ringo No Ie

Ringo no Ie is a nice restaurant/shop in Apple Park. It has a lot of Hirosaki goods, apples and good food. It's a good place for lunch before continuing further, or back towards Hirosaki downtown. Prices are touristy, but not nearly as bad as in bigger cities.

Tsugaru Shamisen Live Aiya

Reviewed By Andrew1234

overall rating: 4-1/4 starsAiya was fun! The izakaya-style ground-floor space accommodates under 25 diners, so making a dinner reservation via the shop's website was a good move. The shamisen music and singing were wonderful. Although the menu was written in Japanese, knowledge of just a few words (sashimi, tempura, junmai gingo, etc.) should suffice...or maybe, like me, you will get lucky and be served by a friendly English-speaking staff member/musician. The food, drink, and vibe were great. I recommend Aiya!

This little restaurant was quite hard to find, and we ended up asking someone Japanese who had Google maps. But worth the hunt. We were the only non-locals in at the time we visited. Very limited menu, not written down. The matron speaks english and was really charming, as was her son. You can sit at chairs or on the floor and are served with either green tea or water and noodles and tempura. Very good, fresh food. We paid 2000 yen for two of us. Lovely little gem.
