Top 10 hotels in Basel, Switzerland

April 7, 2023 Leonardo Torrence

Located on the Rhine River near the borders of France and Germany, Basel contains the country's highest concentration of museums. The culture-centric city, site of the world's most influential art market each June, is also home to the lovely Munster Cathedral, made of red sandstone with a multi-colored tile roof. Green spaces abound, including the popular zoological gardens in the city center. Switzerland's largest site of Roman ruins, Augusta Raurica, are an easy day trip to the east.

My new home in Basel

Reviewed By flow_9n0

Wonderfully comfortable hotel with a very inviting and helpful staff. Mandatory Covid testing and all of the extra travel declarations had me worried about getting home. But the team at the front desk helped to print documents and even to schedule the testing at a nearby clinic. Located just outside the SBB train station, this is my new default stay in Basel.

Great Staff and Location

Reviewed By maritimeexplorer

Basel is a very much underrated tourist destination that should be on everyone's radar. It's medieval district is one of the most lively in Europe and the Kunstmuseum is a must visit art gallery. The Steinenschanze is located only a minute or so from a stairway that leads directly down into the historic district, but far enough away not to be bothered by noise from late night carousers. The rooms are a decent size for Switzerland with electric blinds that can be lowered or closed for a better sleep. The bathroom is marble with a very good shower. One unusual feature was the presence of a vinyl record player with a selection of LPs. I suspect some guests might not even know how to use one. The only thing missing was a mini fridge. The hotel has a very nice garden area where you can sip the cold glass of complimentary white wine they offer on your first night. It's also a good place to enjoy breakfast, but that is not included in the price. The staff are extra helpful and upon our checkout they presented my wife with a birthday present of Swiss goodies. They had noted it from the date on her passport. It was a very nice gesture. The Steinenschanze is mid-level price wise for Switzerland which is still on the higher side by North American standards. One caveat - don't even think of trying to walk here from the train station even though it's not that far. The complex of multi-level roads outside the station is so confusing that even with Google maps we got lost. Thankfully strangers who noted our perplexity stopped to assist us when Siri didn't have a clue.

Hotel was clean and comfortable, staff friendly. Other than that it wasn't a very memorable stay - nothing exceptional, but a good basic stay. I would stay there again and would recommend it for people staying in the Basel area.

Art House Basel

Deceptive!

Reviewed By ABSSParis

The Art House Hotel is well located. People are nice and helpful. The Japanese-zen styled medium superior room is clean, the semi-opened bathroom (shower only) newly equipped. A range of drinks is available in the mini-bar for free, and we are provided with a card that allows discounts for tickets to museums in Basel and to get on the tram for free. All of that seems very promising. BUT, DO NOT INTEND TO use your bedroom for enjoying a relaxing time or for a SLEEP! The level of noise is incredibly high until past 2.30 am, the place being surrounded and topped by bars and lounges and the sound isolation (windows, walls) nonexistent. And even if you decide to party yourself, do not hope to catch some sleep in the morning as from 7 am on, cleaning machines are passing by and forth not once, not twice but 6 times to get rid of all the mess. At 350 € the night (398 with taxes and a disappointing breakfast) I still think you should be entitled to sleep at night in your hotel room, even more when you are sold a "Japanese-zen like" experience.

Ultra modern Gem!!

We stayed at the Nomad for two nights. The location is excellent and amazingly quiet. The rooms a very uncluttered but also very comfortable. The toiletries were of high quality. The check-in check-out process was very easy. We had complimentary access to the Library for snacks and beverages. There is an affiliated restaurant which was very busy although we did not eat there. We would definitely stay here again if we go back to Basal.

Very helpful - a stress relief after a cancelled flight!

Reviewed By Emily2523

Our flight was cancelled due to poor weather, and so we had to book a hotel quickly and easily. This turned out to be the perfect hotel after such a stressful day. The staff are very helpful, make things effective and efficient whilst being personable and genuinely interested in how we are. We were given all the information we needed to enjoy our impromptu stay in Basel. The hotel is situated alongside one of the main tram lines, making travel to and from the SBB and the main squares very simple. We will be recommending this hotel to anyone we know that is visiting Switzerland.

We stayed in a penthouse suite with a view on the city. The room is large and confortable, with a huge bathroom equiped with a walk in shower and a giant bathtub. The bed was not that confortable, and the pillow was a bit low levelled. This is the only negative point. Breakfast is great, the room is very nice, and a special mention to the staff who is warm, friendly and helpful.

Der Teufelhof Basel

The Teufelhof Basel is a unique world, where dining, hotel and culture form a single entity. The hotel thrills guests with diverse aspects in the areas of dining, hotel, culture and unique events. Thus the hotel also runs its own theatre as well as two restaurants, the «Bel Etage» gourmet restaurant and the «Atelier» restaurant. The hotel is rounded off with the «Bar & Kaffee Zum Teufel» and the wine shop «falstaff», embedded in Basel's historic city walls from the 11th and 13th centuries with a small museum on the city’s history. The Teufelhof stands in the middle of Basel’s Old Town, surrounded by sights and unique cultural buildings, and is under absolutely individual ownership - simply put «Basel under one roof». The hotel and cultural house combines two historic houses in the Old Town. This fact, together with the modern interior, gives the Teufelhof its special, timeless charm - a truly fantastic combination of historical and modern. This unique hotel world has 33 rooms and offers two hotel concepts. The Gallery Hotel: modern, stylish, with a painting gallery for an artistic impact. The Art Hotel: art to live in, historical and individual. The latest addition to the Teufelhof Group: the unique restaurant concept of the «1777 Kaffee-Restaurant-Bar» managed by Fabio Gemperli, also in the heart of Basel’s Old Town..
