I had to double check I stayed at the right place based on the reviews

OK, so I knew the price going in, but it's the most expensive dorm room hostel I have ever stayed, in even the most expensive parts of the world. The staff: Just flat rude. No effort. Which is weird because, again, this is one expensive hostel, so you'd think they at least paid these people well since they claim non profit status and don't pay taxes. The room: Let's start with the fact that they claim less people per room on their site when you book. The beds are old, vinyl-like, with old metal white bedposts. The 8 person room might have been the size of a small hotel room (with no bathroom en suite, 4 1 person bathrooms per 4 rooms in each hallways (so 32 people). Plenty of plugs above the bed, storage locker and the WiFi was really good everywhere. They have signs claiming COVID conscious, but no privacy curtains attached to the beds makes me doubt it's not for show. Common areas: kitchen with fridge space (but dirty fridges). Free tea, I think, but no cups, so who knows. Ovens and countertop burners. Pool Table for 20 dollar deposit. Bathrooms are old and in need of a deep clean.. No events, music pumped into the common areas makes doing anything work related difficult. Location: This is Theatre District adjacent, meaning it's in Chinatown, not the actual TD. Pretty sketchy for a few blocks but close to South Station. Overall, not an impressive place, even if it wasn't twice the cost (or more) of better hostels in other cities. The entitlement to money for no service seems crazy to me. I've paid for premium hostels (still less than this) and they have events, show you around (and if COVID is the excuse, I've been to other hostels in cities with worse regulations that did way more for their guests and were actually nice). Honestly, I am surprised based on reviews, I was expecting more (and it didn't just fail to meet high expectations, it is probably in the bottom tier of hostels overall). Like the grey walls, it's just souless and barely going through the motions.

Basic and in need if a deep cleaning

The whole establishment was very dirty. The beds had no protective covering on them, they were very uncomfortable, no box springs. The bathroom in the main hall was filthy..trash over flowing, hair in both sinks and shower. No paper towels, hand soap was empty. Kitchen was OK, trash was full, refrigerator needed a good scrubbing. The other guests were nice. Some had trouble following the quiet time rules. The ac unit in the bedroom kept shutting off.

I had made a reservation at the Fenway Inn for my trip to Boston. The day I was leaving the hotel canceled my reservation without much of an explanation. I had to scramble to find another hotel at the last minute and pay considerably more. I am upset about how I was treated by this hotel.

Beautiful and unique wedding venue

Friendly Crossways was such a fabulous and unique venue for me and my husband's wedding this past August. It is a large, old farmhouse in Harvard, MA, surrounded by stunning grounds and a working farm. Mary Helan and Keith and their staff were attentive, flexible, and incredibly hardworking - honestly every detail of our wedding day went smoothly and better than I could have imagined. My favorite part of Friendly Crossways is that since it is a working hostel (we rent out the entire house for the wedding though), we could have 30 of our closest friends and family spend the entire weekend there with us. It was truly a dream come true!!

The staff here was the highlight, very kind, thoughful and helpful. I had a request for my room and they were very obliging. At the time of writing, this hostel was recently renovated and both kitchen areas and bathrooms of the dorms were great. There are some simple lockers provided (you need your own lock, as is the case for many hostels), but if you are sharing with others and want extra security there are other storage options around eg. Overpriced!

Reviewed By SwinginYoyo

My friend and I booked to stay in an 8 person mixed dorm for the weekend. In terms of value for money this place is a bit of a joke! We paid way too much for a below average experience. The hostel looks new and modern but is like an asylum instead. Concrete and metal everywhere, no character, no warm friendly staff, facilities are very basic. I expected way more! Either the prices need to go down or this place needs to do a lot more to improve the guest experience. There is no atmosphere at all. Breakfast is very basic too. Not worth the money in my opinion!

Very Hot / No a/c / Biting Flies / Most Guests 55+

Reviewed By Aimee S

Good: Nice staff, great location near beach, clean. Neutral: This is the oldest demo I've ever seen at a hostel/backpacker/guesthouse, and I've stayed at literally hundreds all over the world. Most were 55-70+. Nice women mostly, but unusual for a hostel. Many from Boston. Bad: - No a/c and surprisingly not much of a breeze, except on one side of the house where no bedrooms were. It was in 90s when I was there and v humid. If weather forecast shows hot weather, I wouldn't go. - Black biting flies (smaller but similar to a housefly), even bitten inside hostel (not greenflies). I couldn't get much info on when they appear or don't, but DEET doesn't deter them. Their bites hurt. Thousands of them! Chased off beach and couldn't stand still! Not hostels fault, but made stay unpleasant. Staff said mossies are aggressive there too, but they were completely overshadowed by the flies so I can't speak to them.. - Can't use wifi in the female dorm. - My dorm bed I could not sit up while on bottom bunk - and I'm short - I kept bonking my head. Others you could, but were more flimsy so you'd shake more from top bunker moving. - Small dorm rooms with a lot of older women - a lot of snoring (and other, worse noises/smells!) - Guest refrigerators overpacked, hard to put stuff in, need a 3rd, seemed like everyone cooked and had food. Being so far away from anything, makes sense all would bring food.. I cut my stay short and went to an airbnb. Because you have to cancel more than 24 hours in advance, had to stay a night more than I wanted, but I survived. They do what they can, but I would not recommend this hostel. I generally love hostels too - I can afford to stay elsewhere but will take a great hostel any day. This just wasn't one of them.

BEACH ROAD OPPOSITE THE HARBOUR IS ONE OF HYANNIS’ MORE PRESTIGIOUS LOCATIONS…. ….yet there’s a travellers’ hostel there! This is because RUTH CROCKER, a long time HYANNIS tour guide willed her family home to HI. So budget travellers can stay in a genuine CAPE COD dwelling (all weathered shingles etc) in this very good location. Only a few minutes to the inner harbour piers and eats joints. Maybe 10 mins to the MAIN STREET with the usual main st.facilities (but NO SUPERMART!!), a few extra minutes to the BUS STATION and not much longer in the opposite direction to the first of 3 OK BEACHES. Those times are walking – there’s a summer HYANNIS TROLLEY does a circuit including all these places every 45 mins for a nominal fare. But the location is not perfect – there is no BIG supermart close by – true there are a couple of limited joints up on or just north of the main street (ask reception), but you need to travel further for a sizeable one. MORE ON THE HOSTEL – staff exceptional – big thanks to WILL for kindness way above level expected -no shortage of comfy sitting areas. The front verandah gives a nice outlook over the park just north of the inner harbour. - the kitchen was a bit squeezy but not too bad. - free WIFI seemed OK. - outside has plenty of room for parking and relaxing. I managed to hang some washing on my rope tied between the clothesline and a tree (I don’t like to impose on clotheslines might by used to hang sheets etc). BTW – in typical HI form, no hand washing facilities. I did my stuff in bathroom hand basins. SUM UP – this is a good one. Recommended.

Hostelling International - Martha's Vineyard

World class beaches, biking trails, art galleries, and a variety of preservation lands are among the island's many attractions. Favorite destinations include the Aquinnah Clay Cliffs, Chappaquiddick Island, the Menemsha Fishing Village, and the Gingerbread houses of Oak Bluffs. Famous for its beauty and diverse geographical landscape, visitors to the Vineyard quickly become enchanted by "the land beyond the sea beyond the land." Centrally locate on the isle of Cape Cod, our hostel remains in the 1950's architectural style it was constructed in, as the country's first youth hostel, over four decades ago. This is in keeping with the quiet, traditional atmosphere on the island. Attractions include local crafts and galleries but the real magic of Cape Cod lies in it's relaxing ambience. The Island of Martha's Vineyard has long been a favorite destination for exploration and recreation. World class beaches, biking trails, art galleries, and a variety of preservation lands are among the island's many attractions. MARTHA’S VINEYARD HOLIDAY ACCOMMODATION GOES THRU THE ROOF IN SUMMER….. ….but Hosteling International gives bucks-down travelers a chance to stay. Admittedly sharing a dorm with other people isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but you wouldn’t be reading this if you fit that demographic. OK the hostel is not in a touristy place – right in the middle of the island in a very rural area with no neighbours. But the thing is, with a bus stop our front and MARTHAS’ network of cycling tracks passing by, you are never more than a half hour from most island attractions. Other advantages of this location – very quiet. People thinking road noise be aware the buildings are abt 100m from the passing traffic. - of course land values and rentals are lowest here. But this location aint perfect - no nearby shops: good idea to stock up on groceries etc off the ferry because the nearest limited chance is in WEST TISBURY1 mile west (passing buses are on an hourly basis). THE HOSTEL ITSELF - very relaxed environment. Lots of external areas (parking no problem) and spacious interiors with public areas not squeezy. - the 2 guys running the show were very organised: quick check-in, run thru the rules yada. The place was very clean. Kitchen and storage areas spacious. Dorms comfy with the usual HI solid bunks. Bathrooms adequate. - free WIFI variable but good in the common room. TIPS = If like me you are pushed for time, the gingerbread houses of OAKS BLUFF can be done off the ferry or just before departing (only a few hundred meters SW of the OAK’S BLUFF pier) and the period building and sights of EGARTOWN’S main street (plus the nearby harbour area) after dark. As a matter of fact this area is very nice by lamplight. - MARTHA’S bus system is not expensive but has an unusual charging system based on how many towns passed thru – if doing multiple destinations in one day, the good value DAY PASS may be the go. SUM UP – with accommodation a fraction of alternatives, this one becomes a genuine bargain.

Historic hostel with convenient location

Reviewed By Ming O

I stayed at this hostel during my labor day vacation. The location of the hostel is very convenient, especially if you want to ride the Cape Cod rail trail, which is a couple minutes away. There is also a beach nearby (5-10 minutes bike ride), where you can catch the beautiful sunset. The staffs at the hostel are very friendly and the complimentary breakfast they provided was one of the best I have ever had in the hostels in US (Many varieties of food, not just pancake and coffee). They have a well equipped kitchen and even a outdoor grill for guests' use. I happened to read the binder they have in the communal kitchen about the history of this hostel. I found this is one of the oldest hostels in the Cape and in US, and not much has changed since the beginning. A few tips: This is one of the older hostels in US. You can feel the age of the facility (for example, small bathrooms, outdoor shower/small shower room). Everything are still fully functional, but you might need to set proper expectations. Bring eye mask and earplugs if you are sensible to the light/noise during sleep (They have quiet hour, but it was not strictly enforced during my stay). Also if you need to charge your electronic devices, power outlet is very hard to find in dorm cabins, you might want to do it in the common area.
