An Awful Hostel Made Worse by Greedy and Inattentive Ownership

Reviewed By IBF81

My friends and I are scheduled to check out on May 2nd and we are said to say that we've had to endure a terrible hostel experience during our stay. Between the maddening noise of cockadoodledooing roosters which start crowing incessantly through the windows just after 4:00 AM, complete lack of dorm space, fake pillows and greedy management, which charged us more for a tiny room in a terrible location that's a great distance away from Maui's main attractions, than what we paid for an entire two-room suite in downtown Waikiki, you may not find a lot to like about this place. Did I mention that Wi-Fi only works near the reception area, never inside the dorms, and there is no hot water coming from the shower heads whenever solar pannels fail to draw enough energy from the sun?!? Consider yourselves warned and think twice before booking a reservation at this location. Based on the awful personal experience my friends and I have suffered during our stay at Northshore Hostel, I fully intend to seek a substantial portion of the original booking charges to be refunded back to my credit card.

I get a Drill sergents vibe aroound here. Some nice staff for the most part but been screamed at over nothing and heard other people reemed out too. I think people here are mostly depressed and misrable. Polite and welcoming signs such as if u dont like our rules theres the door... haha like really great way to run a business guys.. because the owner seems like not a chill person, theres strict rules. No kitchen use (or available water except bathroom) after 925pm &lightsout so get ready to tip toe on the old squeeky floors. Which is good for people who sleep early but personally i eat after 9pm and sleep after midnight so a bit of a challenge if u want to be here after 9 alive and awake. They only have one toilet for woman which has no ceiling/privacy so i hope you enjoy your business around others. Otherwise theres nothing cheaper in the hilo area, i would recommend staying in kona hostel. Or a private room here as dorms seem to have black mold on most beds. :)

30 Minutes from the Airport

My Hawaii Hostel's location is approximately thirty minutes from the Kona International Airport. Their website is accurate ( outlets for each bed to charge your phone or extra battery) Plenty of room under the bed for luggage and standing lockers with keyed locks included. Take a Mylar blanket to sleep at night, if the air conditioner and ceiling fan is too cold for you.

Centric but terrible mattress

Reviewed By aldojauregui

The place is good. REALLY centric and well located. Near to a bunch of restaurants and cafes. The vibe is nice. Pretty young and friendly. Also professional. Not getting 5 stars because of two reasons: (1) The towels they gave us were like 10 years old. It was like drying ourselves with threads. (2) The mattress was TERRIBLE. I never complain about mattresses but seems there’s always a first time. My back ached for days after we left. We stayed at room 7.

The most run-down place we've ever been to

Reviewed By Sweetdays998

Can anybody even sleep in this place? We visited during summer last year. There was no air conditioning and bugs were everywhere. The mattress provided no back support whatsoever. To make things worse, we could hear everything that was happening upstairs, in bathrooms and outside our windows. We got absolutely no sleep. Employees were hostile and nasty towards us for no reason, which also didn't help our impression of the hostel.

Enjoyable stay at Holo holo inn

Reviewed By emilieliz

I had a great experience during my stay at Holo holo inn. The place was spacious and clean. The showers had HOT water and very decent water pressure (which I often find lacks in hostels). It was also very quaint, great for those who aren't looking to get woken up by drunken people in their hostel dorm. Great location for those who want to explore different parts of Big Island: 5 minute drive to Volcano National Park, about 1h15 from Hilo, 1h30 from the eastern side (Kalapana town, Kehena beach, Uncle Awa's Wednesday night market; which I all particularly enjoyed), 1h45 from Waipio Valley, 1h30 from South Point and the green sand beach which are gorgeous. Satoshi and his wife were so kind and hospitable. Very good price for value. I will definitely be back! Thank you, Satoshi! Emilie from Canada

Cheated out of a lot of money :(

Reviewed By cocono6

Desperately wish I could write a nice review but unfortunately I paid upfront £350 for tours which I never received. This was promised to me by owner Kenny Wadman and then he vanished and never replied to my numerous attempts to contact him. I thought I was supporting the Eco hostel by paying upfront but really I was being ripped off. Do not book the tours or pay anything in advance! If Kenny would like to get in contact and refund me the money owed I would be very grateful as it has damped my one month experience! :( If this post is rejected by the owner I will have to report the hostel to trip advisor. Here's to hoping his disappearance and non contact is not intentional!

The Good Life in the Rain Forest

Reviewed By jsteelboston

We're recently back from 5 weeks on the Big Island, including 4 weeks at Hedonisia in the Jungle Cottage. In the old days, we might have gone for Ocean View, like the friends we made from California, who stay there every year. For us, having our own kitchen and bathroom was very convenient and the monthly rate was an unbeatable bargain. Longer term guests work on the property, in our case for 3 hours per week. That was fun and allowed some great interaction with the majority of guests and interns, who were mostly in their 20's. Mojo, the owner has built the property up over the 14 or so years since he bought it and his unique vision has created a very special place. Note that this is not for everyone. If you are a resort type person, chances are you won't like it here. If you are adventurous, open-minded and like meeting fellow travelers, this is a wonderful place. There is much to do in the area, swimming, snorkeling, soaking in warm pools, hiking, etc. Hilo and Volcanoes National Park are short drives away and Pahoa is a funky town that has all you need for restaurants and markets. We were the oldest guests (in our 60's) and felt welcomed and very comfortable. The coqui's are loud at night, but just bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. This is essentially self-service, so you do your own laundry ($5 wash and dry) and take out your trash and recyclables. It's all part of the great vibe here. We look forward to our return visit!
