Inspired by TA we went for lunch here in the picturesque old town, we didn't reserve but arrived at 12.20 and there were still a few tables left but it was full by 1pm; we were probably the only non-locals. This was Wednesday - some shops are closed on this day in Agen; mid-December. Agen has many restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets; this was one of the best €16 3-course menus we've had for a long while. Also Cotes de Bruhlois (the local wine) available by the carafe. We chose the warm leek tart, cod and tiramisu; with 75cl wine and coffee came to €23.50 each. Superb value. Service spot on - efficient and civil; not over-familiar or intrusive. Tip for parking in Agen - don't bother with trying to find a space in the old town - the streets are narrow and have a labarynthine one-way system. There are plenty of inexpensive spaces on the river-side of Av Gen de Gaulle and a 10 minute stroll up into the old town from there. Thanks for your advice, I hope to see you again in Bistrot Voltaire. Enjoy your trip

The €18 set menu for dinner was excellent value. The food was delicious and choices good. The people were very friendly and it has a relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant was completely full and they coped well.Situated almost opposite the Ibis hotel and well worth eating there if staying in that hotel.

LA CUCINA

We recently dined here and it was absolutely dreadful. Our main course was risotto with pancetta, mushroom and cream sauce. It was truly inedible , totally overcooked and unbelievably dry.( clearly just thrown into the oven and left ) Not surprisingly we complained to the waiter, who took our dishes back to the kitchen. However, nobody wanted to know and our complaint was simply ignored. We were charged €34 for 2 the inedible dishes (out of a total bill of €75).It was a terrible experience made worse by the fact that the management totally ignored our complaint. The risotto was a disgrace to Italian cuisine. ?

La Cantine du Pecheur

In the middle of a low rise shopping 'estate' just outside Agen, I wasn't expecting great things. We had our usual lunch of 6 oysters followed by fish soup, our friends had other options. The oysters were beautifully fresh and the fish soup was delicious. The rest of the party were delighted with their meals. Everything was impeccably presented by cheerful staff, with wine, water and bread brought swiftly. Ambience is sophisticated and modern. Our meal came to about 65€ per couple but that included two bottles of wine for four people (well three people really as the driver restrained himself!)Our friends had been recently during the week (we were there at Saturday lunchtime) and it was mobbed - so better to book. Attached to the restaurant is a deli selling fresh (and some frozen) fish, shellfish and lots of interesting delicatessen goods. Well worth a visit, we'll certainly be going back.

Le Carre' Gourmand

Five of us decided to try this highly recommended restaurant hidden away in Box village. Our initial recce during a cycle ride was positive and we booked a table for the following Friday evening in the outstanding garden. On our arrival we were warmly welcomed by the manager and shown to our table. He also offered us a choice of aperitif and we all decided to sample a gin and tonic. The Menus arrived and offered a choice of three course or seven course gourmand dining plus al a carte. We all decided to try the three course gourmand on offer and were delighted with the food. The carte de van also offers a good selection of wine and I chose a decent bottle of Cahors which was decanted at the table. An amuse bouche helped soak up the gin and prepare us for the starter which can only be described as outstanding. A mixed and varied selection of mouth watering dishes served on one plate. Eventually we all managed to complete this food journey and took in the surroundings awaiting the main event. My guinea fowl (or black chicken as the manager described it) accompanied with a red pepper crumble, was superb and cooked perfectly. The chosen wine soon came to an end and our request for 'another' resulted in the realisation that the wine we chose had ran out. This was swiftly remedied by the offer of a better wine at the same price - great service. The puddings were again superb and started a minor disagreement at the table as to which was the best. I must say that my panna cotta was one of the best I have ever eaten. Overall a fantastic meal at a great price that I look forward to repeating the next time we visit the area. Highly recommended.
