Top 10 Campgrounds in Virginia, United States

April 19, 2023 Rebbecca Marino

Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

Wonderful amenities…my daughter especially loved the spacious pool and splash pad! This KOA had amazing family themed activities… such attention to detail! My daughter loved the petting zoo one night with horses and llamas and donkeys! The location to all the historic sites is perfect! Such a short drive and only about an hour to Virginia Beach! The staff at the store ( special thanks to Diane and Rob) for giving us such a detailed explanation of history of the areas, unique sites, and a great deal on tickets for all 5 historic sites we wanted to see! Thank you Williamsburg KOA for providing a wonderful family vacation!

I was very disappointed how close the tent sites are to each other. They state two tents on each site. It is very hard to put two tents side by side. Your neighbors tent site is right next to you. You felt like you were camping with them. We had children wondering onto our site. A young toddler fell into our fire ring, luckily it was just smoke or she could have been seriously hurt. Parents were not watching their young children! Also, this campground is very very noisy!!! You can hear the cars on the highway at night, and the airplanes flying over you. The employees were very helpful and friendly. For the most part the campground was very clean. We only had an issue on 5/30 that the bathrooms were dirty and no toilet paper.

Never again

Army Veterans here, used to camping. This campground has a lot of thoughtful amenities. It is a family run business and I'm not trying to hurt it. They do not advertise the noise intrusion of the train. We stayed in our tent which is stationed uncomfortably close to train tracks separated by a flimsy wire fence. The train ran every 2 hours at night. Every two hours my kids woke up, as did we. The ground literally shook. My noise canceling ear buds and sound machine app were no match for this. It felt like we had a newborn. By the morning, both families felt exhausted, which impacted our ability to enjoy our plans to explore the theme park and Williamsburg. Of course we made the best of it. Bottom line up front, we won't recommend and we will not return.

Restful and Great Location

Reviewed By Sea0ats

New River Trail Cabins are excellent. The Owners operate a property that allows instant access to walking, running, or biking along the New River Trail. My husband and I drove from Charleston, SC to bike the 57 Miles Trail from Galax to Pulaski. We accomplished this and then spent time going in and out of the shops in downtown Galax. We also went to the Blue ridge Music Center that is off the Blue Ridge Parkway and listened to Dora Freeman and the Winston Salem Symphony Orchestra Strings group of 4 excellent musicians. Friends from Boone joined us for biking 20 miles as well. This is allows for rest, activity, reading, etc. Great price for a picture perfect spot!

Big Meadows

I have been going to Big Meadows since 1987 and this place NEVER disappoints! I have stayed at the campground, lodge, and cabins. There are two places to eat (lodge and Wayside), as well as fuel, small grocery store, and a gift shop. There is an overlook at the far end of lodge that is only a 150 yard hike. I actually have slept there a few times. PHENOMENAL VIEWS! After hiking during the day, the "Taproom" has alcohol, live music at times, and is just a great time. Don't miss "Dark Hollow" falls, a look over the Meadow, the rock climb, nature hike, and a plethora of other activities close by! Don't listen to the negative reviews as this place DOES NOT disappoint! Stay safe and you will see seer close by, turkey, and my last visit, a mother bear was Pawling her young cubs who had hopped over the stone barrier.

Rude staff in clubhouse. Can't seem to properly hire for the pool during the summertime. So they kept having to close the slides during our stay. We were not made aware of this upon arrival... Not until we asked why the slides were closed were we told, oh we don't have the staff. very disappointing

Cabin Creekwood

Cabin Creekwood offers nine unique, pet-friendly cabins in the peaceful surroundings of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Waynesboro Virginia. Our cabins range in size from 1 to 3 bedrooms, and each is fully furnished to offer all the comforts of home, complete with stocked kitchens, BBQ grills, air conditioning, and woodstoves. Each of our cabins has its own unique charm; some are more rustic like our 200 year old log cabin, while others offer modern luxury in a mountain setting.

Logwood - Renter Beware!!!

Reviewed By CAB5858

Video/pictures are carefully presented to not depict what you will be truly getting. If you are looking for a private cabin in the woods with easy access to a creek right outside the back door, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU. - The cabin is located on a well-traveled road, not off the beaten path via the gravel drive depicted. - There are two additional homes right next door - a big rating of 0 for privacy. - The inside is extremely small (which was ok), but the photos do not accurately depict what is there. The full size washer/dryer (in the kitchen) is overkill in this little space , no cute table & chairs; instead an ugly bar thing. The furnishings are more than a little worn; look like they came from a bad second-hand store. - Bath is ok; no shower. - Upstairs is a one room loft. The video depicts 2 full size beds, the written description states 3. Which is it? Three beds and dressers, which makes for very little space to even move around. I can't imagine 6 adults sleeping up there. - If you are disabled or elderly, you will not be able to enjoy the creek in the back as one must navigate a steep vertical slope down/up. And, I mean steep! - While the cabin is set up to sleep a hand full of people, the size is truly for no more than 2 - even three would be pushing it. - As we didn't stay, I can't really comment on the kitchen (it "appeared" adequate) or the condition/comfort of the beds. We wanted to get away from it all, not be sharing our time with the neighbors next door and not be able to enjoy the creek and surrounding woods. Suffice it to say, people do not pack up with 2 large dogs, fill up with gas (which is not cheap these days), and travel for several hours only to turn around and leave. While we were offered to try another cabin, we declined in that we really didn't want to deal with folks who had been so deceptive from the get go and continued to place the blame on us since we didn't investigate the property on Google Maps. Really!!! We were offered a 50% refund, of which we only received a portion. We should have been refunded 100% for the pet fee charge and the arm load of fire wood we purchased, plus an error in their math when initially charging us. As far as I'm concerned, we should have been refunded for every penny.
