Top 10 Campgrounds in Great Barrier Reef, Australia

May 1, 2023 Madelene Haan

The world's largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef stretches almost 1500 miles into the Pacific from the tip of Queensland. Designated a Marine Park by the Australian government and a World Heritage Area by UNESCO, the reef is home to an extraordinary abundance of species and habitats. Snorkeling, diving and fishing are rightly popular along the reef, nowhere more so than on the Whitsunday Islands, where the silica sands and aqua waters of the Coral Sea create the perfect beach escape.

Shhhhh..... don't tell too many people about this gem!

Reviewed By lauravD1965WR

We recently had a 4 night stay on the island for our honeymoon and we felt like we were in heaven. The Hideaway resort offers low key affordable accommodation and as such some of the rooms are basic in nature and a little dated. However, the setting, the service, the food, the entertainment and the activities that are provided on site are sensational and more than make up for this. What a vibe! What a place! Service = incredible. All the staff are friendly and warm and go out of their way to make you welcome and make your stay enjoyable. In particular, Darren the Supervisor gave us sensational personal service and couldn't do enough to ensure that our honeymoon was extra special. Nothing was too much trouble for him. Food = Absolutely delicious! Big portions, efficient service, great quality and reasonable prices, we couldn't ask for more. Setting = Location location location! Phenomenal spot right on the beach, bar / bistro is also overlooking the beautiful ocean. Adventure = Kayaking, snorkelling, boat trips, fishing tours.... the list goes on. We took a trip with Mark on his boat to Wreck island and had the place to ourselves for the whole afternoon. Snorkelling the reef on Monkey Island is not to be missed. Entertainment = Live music at the weekend and regular shows throughout the year. Quality stuff and the atmosphere is brilliant. We absolutely love this place and can't wait to bring the kids back at Christmas. Thanks to everyone that made our stay so memorable.

Pet Friendly??

Reviewed By Aussiegirl4301

This caravan park is in a great location close to the centre of Airlie Beach, the bathroom facilities were old but they were kept reasonably clean. However, we were disappointed to be told upon checkin that even though it’s a pet friendly park our small dog wasn’t allowed to be left alone at all. Not even locked inside out air conditioned 22ft caravan!!!! Not to enjoy the pool onsite or for anything else. This makes site seeing in the area very difficult. We were given the name of 4 pet sitters who were not available due to it being a long weekend. I wish this information had be shared with us upon booking as we would have reconsidered this location or left the dog at home. I would also not recommend booking tours with reception as we were given incorrect information regarding the starting location for one our tours. Luckily we checked this info directly with the tour company and avoided the disaster of turning up at the wrong location…

We have stayed in this beautiful park on three occasions over the past 2 years for periods of up to 3 months We are booked again for 4 months next year We have a slide on camper and large boat We take a site at the back of the park What previous reviews have said about the water problem is true However this is currently being addressed with new drainage etc and it is my understanding that the amount of rain received in the last year has been unusual and therefore the problem was made worse There are lots of beautiful trees to provide plenty of shade The camp kitchen is excellent- oven large gas cooktops and big fridge freezer and utensils are available at the office if needed Plenty of ceiling fans snd tables New amenities at the front and back ones are perfectly fine. Always very clean One of the reasons we continue to stay here is because of the amazing receptionist alvira She is very friendly and accommodating and always willing to help She organizes a singer in the park for everyone’s enjoyment and always makes her guests feel like family and old friends We love this park because it’s quiet and you can walk along the beautiful beach and the board walk You can walk down to the fabulous surf club for great meals and the owners Jason and Kerry are amazing and the food is great It is a 10 minute drive to a great boat ramp and then 1 hour to the reef for great fishing snd snorkeling 5 minutes to Woolies We love this park and Alvira

Stayed 5 days.A great park with excellent amenities. Great double slab site was excellent and the Park was lovely and quiet. It was well maintained even to making preparations to protect vans by trimming trees etc for a Storm which eventually came. Despite entry being repaired diversions meant no disruptions but ? villa people may not enjoy all the pool people walking past their frontages to go to the Pool? Big swimming pool that was welcoming and allows real swimming. Fish and chip Van weekly and coffee van daily was very nice plus the Town is only a short drive or even a little walk.Staff very helpful and advised on a plumber when we had a minor issue with our Van.. above and beyond support.Thanks. We will not hesitate to stay here again.
