April 27, 2023 Kandra Bartel

Grindelwald is postcard-perfect, a charming example of a Swiss ski resort. There are slopes for all experience levels, plus plenty of snowy activities for those who don’t ski, such as sledding, hiking or snowshoeing. Not feeling particularly active? Just cozy up by crackling fire and enjoy the merry atmosphere. After a long day, nothing’s better than lingering over a pot of Swiss fondue and a glass of crisp wine as you plan the next day’s adventures.

Hotel Gletscherblick

Wonderful cozy space with amazing views

Reviewed By elizabethhY6298QF

A friend and I stayed there for 2 nights to explore the area and loved this hotel. The staff was friendly and courteous and helpful. It is a bit of a walk and it's pretty much all uphill from the train station so if you have a lot of luggage I recommend a bus or arranging a ride but once you are up there the view is wonderful. I would stay again if I was back in the area

Our room had a fantastic view of the Eiger, wonderful to wake up to each morning. The room was comfortable and exceptionally clean. Breakfast was plentiful. Staff were all very helpful especially when my fiancé broke his arm in a skiing accident.

Steinbock Hotel Grindelwald

The Chalet Hotel Steinbock is a beautiful wooden chalet, right in the centre of Grindelwald, just next to the first gondola (skiing area in winter, hiking paradise in the summer). The Steinbock was mentioned in books in 1700, but was completely rebuilt in 1991. It is famous for its restaurant - the most popular restaurant in town - with Italian and Swiss cuisine. The restaurant is famous for the huge steaks, the great pizzas, the excellent liver, to just name a few dishes.

Expensive, but worth the stay

Reviewed By robs8

We only stayed for one night in June 2019 (which is probably all most visitors need). They gave us a family room for our family of 5. It was average, with a shared bathroom down the hall. All of the rooms are in the basement with simple Ikea-style furniture. Two things made the visit very special. The first was the incredible views from the hotel. We arrived just as the last tourists were heading back down the mountain, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. We could walk on the cool cliff walk without the crowds. I don't know how many rooms they have, but I bet its only about 8 rooms (some sleep 6 people). So maybe only 20 - 30 people on the whole mountain. The other pleasant surprise was the woman who check us into the hotel. Her name was Nina. I think she was the hotel manager. With so few guests at the hotel, she gave us very personalize attention. Our kids have celiac disease and need gluten free food. When Nina heard us talking about their dietary restrictions she went into the kitchen and brought out the chef. He said that he would work with us to find something for the kids and gave us several choices. When it was time for dinner, Nina was the server and brought us each a 3 course meal. The food was good and well presented. Later that night, my young daughter got sick and Nina handled our mess (getting us buckets and sending the maid to change the sheets in the bedroom). Thank you Nina... you made our trip very memorable. I'd also like to note that I met the owner. Although I saw him only once, he was also helpful. My kids will not forget the trip to First. Thank you all.

The Views are Truly Astounding

Reviewed By lordbyron59

As have so many other writers, I begin by noting the view which is simply spectacular. We sat on our balcony watching the sun set on the Eiger. It was magical. And again the next morning as the sun rose. The hotel itself is otherwise of the B&B type. Simple rooms, friendly staff. The property is a good long way from town, which we appreciated because it was quiet and serene. The center of Grindelwald is pretty crowded and noisy, but this place was relaxing and pleasant. I would staff again.

Berghaus Baregg

The Berghaus Baregg is situated at 1775 m altitude at the east end of the Grindelwald valley. Located on the hiking trail from Pfingstegg to Schreckhornhutte right in the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE. On foot you'll reach the Berghaus from the station of the aerial cableway on the well developed hiking trail after a 1.5h walk. Welcome to the Baregg, surrounded by beautiful glaciers and mountains...

Very unpleasant owner

Reviewed By Nicolas L

We made the hike to berghaus viewpoint with friends the 16th of August and it was a very hot day. My friends have a baby and need to put some sunscream. So, we stopped for maximum 5 minutes in the shadow of the terrace. We didn't sit and didn't eat our stuff. It was just a small break for the baby. They didn't either change the baby in the restaurant. The owner came to us very angry, asking us to move, saying that the mountain is big enough to stop elsewhere. Still, the terrasse was almost empty, so we didn't bother anyone who could have want to have a drink. She also ask if we do the same in our country ... We didn't respond and stayed calm but surely I should have said that in our country people are friendy and comprehensive ! So, enjoy the view in the hiking path but don't stop here, except if you want to give money to a very unfriendly owner.
