Carmen's

Reviewed By SaltRiverFarm

Three of us dined at Carmen's last night. Beautiful room and building in a country setting. Congenial staff greeted us and served us with a smile and good humor. Our server Meg confessed to being new, but hospitality flows through her veins. It is well worth a request to be seated in her section. Caesar salad was huge and delicious. Wednesday night chicken wings special with a wide range of creative sauce selections was unbeatable at $.50 per wing. Carmen's is known for their chicken. It did not disappoint. Finding good pizza north of Boston is a great struggle. I would not have expected Carmen's to serve pizza, but a friend told me it was excellent. I had my doubts going in. Coming out I knew I had just eaten the best pizza, by far, on the Seacoast. It was memorable, and is on my mind for a repeat visit soon. Might have overdone it with the fried dough topped with ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate sauce, but it was well worth the pain. Liquor and food prices were entirely reasonable. Quality of food and most friendly portions make Carmen's an extraordinary value.

I grew up eating at Fremont Pizzeria as we lived close-by throughout my childhood/teenage years. I still get cravings for their pizza still to this day. Their dough is absolutely perfect and the toppings are delicious. When I am nearby I always try and get my fiance to make a quick stop for take-out.

Had dinner with a party of 8. I think it is too highly rated on trip advisor. Three of us had strip steak and all thought it was very chewy. For $34 for a lower cut of steak it should have been prepared via cutting and or marinating better. The others enjoyed there various dishes but thought the pricing was a little high for what you get , even for organic. I eat out a lot and thought the restaurant was okay, but not amazing or terrific. It takes food and atmosphere to get that rating , not just the atmosphere which is quite nice.

Outstanding mix of food that is gaurenteed to be delightful. I have never had a bad meal here, regardless of when I have enjoyed dining here. The staff is always accommodating and the food always exceptional. It is a little on the higher side but always better than many of the areas wanabe restaurants. Easy to get to and plenty of free parking, far different than what you would experiance in Portsmouth or Boston. If you try it I am sure you will like it.

Decor and staff could use a sprucing, but not the food! The chef does a wonderful job offering very good maple French Toast, though it would be better with homemade bread, and absolutely mind blowingly fabulous maple walnut muffins. Moist with a perfect, non-sickeningly sweet frosting that is unmistakably REAL maple, the muffins are the best we've had and a huge hit. So ignore the dark decor and too casual attire and enjoy the taste bud delights served promptly at this local hotspot.

Walking in I had such high hopes. I briefly scoped out the menu online and they seemed to have a lot to offer. We chose to sit at the bar per usual and started to look over the draught beer. Decent selection. My stoneface was $8. I figured with the menu the price went hand in hand. No problem paying for quality. Our bartender, Amber, started off ok and then someone told her she knew a table in the dining room and she was gone for the most part. We got the nacho appetizer because most stuff was friend and I had already decided to have garlic fries with my meal (she never rang them in and that was probably a blessing) It was late-ish and hubby got a Rueben and I a Caesar salad on recommendation from the bartender. It was plain. Like the person making it forgot an ingredient or two. It happens. The tops on the nachos were very fresh (nacho portion on the small side) as well as very fresh romaine, also a small portion. His Rueben came with cajun fries and they were the weirdest fries ever. You bit into a crisp fry and then it was gone.... disintegrated. When Amber asked how the salad was because I hadn't eated even half and I responded with "plain" she actually started to argue with me. Asking me where I think I could get better. I gave the salad to my husband to eat and.....he didn't. When I said I would pack his half of a sandwich and that she didn't need to...she rolled her eyes then went into the kitchen and complained about us...the bar is open to the kitchen. She either forgot or didn't care.If I rated based on service I would give this place a 0.The level of service and quality of food did not meet the level of satisfaction their price point would lead one to expect. Very odd.

Bolton's Lake House

I will start with the only nice thing about Bolton's: The view. The view is beautiful and relaxing over looking Kingston Lake. Extremely nice. I should add that the woman taking our order was sweet and efficient. The food was absolutely terrible. We order the fish and chips which was advertised as Haddock.I truly must question if it was Haddock. After 40+ years in the seafood industry I believe I am qualified to judge Haddock. The flakiness and texture and color was not like any Haddock I ever had.The French fries were acceptable but I have definately had better. Their onion rings are no longer freshly home made as in the past. They are frozen. We used to love this place but sadly to say, we are moving on and not returning.Extremely disappointed!
