Freda's Cafe

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Freda's. Standouts were the seafood bisque, the scallops wrapped in bacon, and the nice fresh salad. Mixed feelings about the crab cakes: the cakes themselves were delicious, but the mango sauce seemed like a gimmicky distraction, drowning the delicate flavor to some extent. Also, there should be a warning on the stuffed pepper appetizer: the peppers are so extremely, fiery hot that we ended up emptying them and just eating the stuffing, which was okay but kind of defeated the purpose. (We realize that some people love fiery hot peppers but we wouldn't have ordered them if we had known). With that caveat, we would eat here again, anytime. Very friendly laid back service and an overall good vibe.

George's Place

Visited Cape May last week and stopped at George's 2x. They made a very good and quick breakfast sandwich/coffee for us to take birdwatching; very nice staff. Day 2, hubby hit the trail and I came here for a peaceful breakfast on my own. Delish bagel, coffee (they have excellent Bonne Maman jelly packets....blueberry!) and time to read! I was hoping for chipped beef, but only on the weekends. Again, very nice staff. The place is pretty small overall, and I felt trapped in the booth...a tight squeeze! Waitress said I picked the smallest one, so changed to a more comfy table. Lots of parking right out front this time of year and they don't start vigorous ticketing until 10:00 am. Did not come for dinner as the menu was heavy on Mediterranean flavors; not our fave. Do give this spot a try; they are open all year, but with some reduced hours.

Tisha’s has always been a five star restaurant for my family and friends but our recent visit this past weekend left us very disappointed. We started with some excellent appetizers....their delicious fresh tasting calamari and an absolutely wonderful burrata salad with beets and heirloom tomatoes. So good that I will try and duplicate it at home. Entrees were definitely a problem. My wife got their special which was seafood pescatore . It was literally a huge plate of mussels in their shells. After picking the mussels out of the shells, there were literally just two shrimp and two scallops. I am not kidding you. For $32, this dish was appalling. My pork Marisa was not much better. It was described as a pork chop with apple brandy sauce and Gorgonzola crumbs. It was so devoid of flavor that I had to ask our waitress for more Gorgonzola. Luckily desserts helped end the night on a high note. Their flourless chocolate cake is one of the best we’ve had and their key lime pie is the real authentic kind. Beyond the food though, our service was terrible; our waitress just disappeared. Plus it was so dark in the restaurant that every other table was using their flashlight app on the iPhone. I get that you want ambiance but turn the lights on. A disappointment for sure.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. We ordered ala carte as well as the chef's tasting menu and the garden menu (myself). I loved each dish from the garden menu, the portion sizes were right on target so that I wasn't full by the time my entree arrived (though I couldn't finish most of my dessert - the apple crisp). The first course was endive with goat cheese and a beet puree and it was excellent. I loved the berry-basil sorbet course, perfectly balanced the herb with other ingredients. The house bread was wonderful - warm, cheesy, moist. My brother's short rib was outstanding as well as his appetizer, the duck ravioli. My mother had the chef tasting menu, while she wasn't overwhelmed with the steak tartare, my brother happily finished it up. She loved the scallops entree. The setting is lovely as well - a comfortable distance between tables and especially since my elderly mother has a bad back and hip, comfortable seating. Courses were served in perfect timing, as well as the taking of our orders. The staff (wait and owner) were attentive, but not too much so.

The salmon, crab cakes and Meyers Steak received high ratings from my dinner companions and my braised ribs were other worldly. Went here during restaurant week 2019. The menu offered extensive choice in all three categories — that isn’t typical of most participating restaurants. Yes, some of the items were smaller than the usual size when you are paying full price. But the ambience and taste were top notch. Started with the tuna tartare - very light. Diced tuna on top of seaweed salad on a single crisp taco. Small but well done. THe entree for me wasa lobstertail atop lobster rissoto. Delicious. Dessert was a fruit tart. Light as well.

We’ve been to Menz several times with family (not my choice!). I do not understand the fascination with this place. The food is overpriced and nothing special. The service was spotty at best-as if they did not have sufficient waitstaff. The portions are decent but for the price should be more. The decor is very eclectic...like someone took an antique store and blended it with your crazy uncle’s taxidermy collection (do you really want a deer or moose mounted on the wall, staring at you as you eat?). The gift/candy shop was nice-kids and adults will get a kick out of the “penny candy”. I get it that this establishment is a long time fixture in Cape May County (hence the multiple pictures of FDR). I guess everyone needs to go once for the experience. Do so, and then move on. And try not to be freaked out by the two-headed goat.
