Disappointing not 4 Star!

Reviewed By elainemZ4999LR

We booked this holiday to the Costa Brava as its our golden wedding year and we spent our first holiday here 52 years ago and wanted to re-visit. We mentioned this on our 'special request' form when booking and also asking for a top floor quiet room - both were ignored, so a bit of a pointless exercise. On arrival we were dismayed to find the hotel pool, which was very small, and relax area were completely overlooked by depressing mid and high rise apartments in various stages of repair.Photographs of the hotel obviously taken so the apartments don't feature! Our allocated room on the first floor was very, very small and our view was of the apartment block about twenty metres away and so we decided to upgrade to a superior room costing an extra £155. Again we were offered a first floor room which was much bigger but again facing apartments and looking down at the pool area. Unfortunately we later found out that very time the automatic doors opened or closed the noise of the mechanics gravitated upwards into our room keeping us awake.Another trip to the reception to ask for a different room and re-packing our suitcases we ended up on the third floor - and yes once again facing the apartments but slightly further away, but having a small side view of the sea. That evening we sat with a glass of wine on our small balcony and were subjected to a full blown pornographic display from the couple in the aforementioned apartment opposite (I suppose people pay good money in red light districts for this but wasn't really our cup of tea)!!! As we settled down for our first nights sleep we were disturbed by a constant buzzing noise which turned out to be the extractor fan in the bathroom which wouldn't turn off. Another trip to reception to report this (in view of the notices about caring for the evironment by not washing towels as often we felt morally obliged to report this waste of electricity) - moreover we needed a good nights sleep!!! This was never fixed and so we used earplugs so we could sleep. Dining experience - poor. Queues to get into the dining room probably due to the lack of efficiency in clearing tables as people left. Staff seemed under trained and lacked social skills (apart from a very pleasant young man on the front desk and one of the waitresses, Maria). The food was plentiful but bland and particularly the main course was luke warm. Unfortunately some guests who turned up for dinner wearing vests and joggers decided to inspect deserts by sniffing them and then dipping their hands into the cherries and replacing the ones they didn't want - a real off put. Not the hotels fault but maybe a bit of a dress code might change the culture a bit for the better. The service level throughout was mediocre but in fairness it has to be said the hotel was immaculately clean thanks to the cleaning staff. Small changes in the management of the staff would make a big difference. Beach was very nearby using an underpass below the railway line. There was miles of lovely beach (albeit gritty sand and pebbles which made buying beach shoes a must ). We spent or days on the beach paying 18 euros for beds and umbrellas which was well worth it to get away from the crowded lounge/ pool area of the hotel where people placed towels on beds before breakfast to secure their spot (a bit like the programme Benidorm). However, the beach is not suitable for young children as it shelves deeply after a metre. Hotel location is on a busy street with more of the same huge hotels, apartments and shops crowded together and a lot of graffiti a bit like a well known sea side resort in the UK. It wasn't for us. We were glad to get the return coach to the airport but saddened by our experience. A beautiful area had been transformed into a sprawling mess due to over development. At the very pleasant Gerona airport we had a glimpse of the real area whilst sat in the relax lounge overlooking the mountains - the best view of the whole holiday!

Nice hotel but small and limited

Reviewed By 990spencerw

Got moved to this hotel as original hotel splash park was not open yet, only to be told on arrival splash park not open to two days after my family holiday was finished. Rooms small but clean and cleaned daily. Reception staff really nice especially a man with shaggy hair as could not do enough looked like the manager. All other staff very helpful with exception of one bar tender who is very rude to most British customers and serves others fist as mention by many guests. Food is basic but fresh and a choice for everyone. Beware snack bar food was cold as heater was/is broken (see pictures). Entertainment is average and repeated weekly so if your staying over a week you will see the same show. Child entertainment is limited to one lady and again is games in the day and a little disco in the evening. Think is 18 euros on arrival at the hotel for tourist tax. Safe in room for one week is around 40 Euros. Wi-Fi out down stairs but not great in the rooms. Air conditioning in rooms is working and fine. Anyone has any questions about hotel or area let me know happy to try and help!

Don't hesitate! Most relaxing place ever

Stayed a week half board and was not disappointed. Every member of staff is friendly, helpful and professional. The food is very good and the restaurant staff are lovely. The pools are great, (but cold!) And there is an "adults only" pool and garden area for a little more peace and quiet. There is a spa on site that can be accessed for a fee, bit there are over a dozen classes with a yoga teacher who does yoga, tai chi, chi Kung, boules, archery, meditation, tea ceremony - the list goes on. It was wonderful and I've never felt more chilled on a holiday. Highly recommended if you need to unplug from the rat race. I would mention that the area itself was a little tired if you ventured outside the hotel, but since I was so engaged in all the classes for total relaxation I would have been more than happy to stay the entire time on hotel grounds. Luna spa, thank you so very much. ??

Hotel from hell

I have been coming to malgrat de mar for years and have stayed in other htop hotels always had a great time. This hotel was terrible me and our family really have had a holiday from hell. Please do not pay all inclusive to stay in this hotel we was penalised for this. On our first day we went to the outside bar to get a drink was told no you can’t get a drink from here it’s for paying customers only yours is free you have to go inside to get a drink. First night asked waiter for a drink was told no yours is free go to inside bar if you want a drink here you have to pay. First morning we asked to get coffee and wanted to pay for coffee was told this is not possible until 9pm and if all inclusive you can get at 10. There is no kettle or fridge in room for drinks we paid €12 to have a fridge for 3 nights no problem but it didn’t work. They really do not want the English people at this hotel. However children’s entertainers were brilliant and hotel was clean. This has put me off for life. It’s such a shame how this hotel has let the htop group down. This hotel was like staying in a basic hostel I just wanted to cry and come home. I was prepared to eat out every day for lunch and dinner because I like to do that on holiday it was a good job I had that in mind because food was horrendous

Great hotel

The staff were amazing and very helpful with all queries. The rooms were really nice and the aircon was really good. The beds were amazing. Only thing that draws it down is that we didnt feel the bathroom or the floors in the room were clean enough or cleaned properly. The breakfast buffet was very well stocked with lots of options and continously restocked. There was a different dinner menu every day but we didnt try it. All in all a very good hotel. I would recommend later in the year though as many things weren't opened yet for the season. But would definitely recommend

Stayed during 2019, very satisfied. A clean, basic room with everything we needed, there was a problem in the bathroom so we were upgraded to a sea view room FOC. Most of the food was okay, labels stating what various things were would of been handy as I ended up eating something with seafood on it, which I'm not a fan of. Staff were spot on, the pool looked alright even though we didn't use it... Wouldn't hesitate to return

Lovely hotel

Having arrived for a weeks stay was pleseantly surprised. No reviews for over a year so wondered what we would face.. Hotel was lovely and clean, could do with a bit of a paint but nothing that would spoil the stay. We are all inclusive and the range of food was outstanding, I'll be amazed if you could not find something you liked given the vast choice on offer.. This was repeated at all meal services... The staff are very friendly but I am a big believer in treat people how you wish to be treated.. If you are rude then expect the same back. Was given a twin room, however at check in this was quickly changed to a double, requested extra pillows which was done immediately. The rooms were cleaned almost every day throughout our stay. Great covid measures in place, gloves provided during meal times so you can serve yourself. Location great, beach literally on the doorstep. 2 mins walk via the underpass, lovely and clean.. Train station in front of hotel, plenty of shops bars, restaurants all within walking distance.. All in all couldn't fault the stay and would come back. Picture view from our room

We booked a holiday with on the beach all inclusive for 7 days. We arrived 7pm and was greeted by a very nice lady in reception, she took our details and handed us a key for room 023. We went to the room which was a ground floor room next to the train track, we noticed a damp smell and could see there was damp about the patio door.i took a pic and we went back too reception to ask to change the room. The manager said no chance due to f1 and would look at it the next day. I shown him the picture of the damp and he swapped rooms straight away. I did request a sea view room via email but he said I should of rang to request ( for future info if anyone needs too). Food good I can say you would never go hungry. Food was a little repetitive, Also if you like fish then this iscfor you .Drink was plentiful and a lot of choice more than I had in previous hotels. Clean and tidy get the odd day where can smell sewage I assume it sewage tank getting full. Staff very pleasant young guys in the bar are fantastic and cleaner round every day with clean towels. Very little in surrounding area but alot of activities within the hotel. Another odd thing we noticed was some Spanish visitors arrived and were treated like royalty, reserved tables bubbly on arrival that the English was not offered. Overall a very good clean hotel. Would recommend if you want a quiet all inclusive break.
