Things to do in Eastern Poland, Eastern Poland: The Best Cultural Tours

December 23, 2021 Margarita Chappel

An area that changed flags several times in the 20th century, Eastern Poland consists of Podlaskie, Lublin and Subcarpathian Voivodships (Provinces). The largest cities in each are Bialystok, Lublin and Zamosc respectively. The Masurian Lake District in the northeast includes Wigry National Park and Lake Hancza, the deepest lake in Poland. Bialowieza National Park, on the Belarusian border, protects one of the last remaining sections of a huge primeval forest that once covered Eastern Europe.

Majdanek – German concentration camp from II World War. The Majdanek concentration camp was in operation on the south-eastern outskirts of Lublin between autumn 1941 and July 1944. It was officially designated as a »Prisoner of War Camp of the Waffen SS in Lublin«. After the German attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941, the camp was to become a production site for the SS. In the approximately 30 months of its existence, the »Lublin concentration camp«, as it was officially called from February 1943 on, fulfilled various functions and was subordinate to different entities within the National Socialist concentration camp system. The SS used it as a forced labor camp and partially as an extermination and transit camp. The memorial, which was established on the former camp premises after the war, was one of the first memorials in Europe to honor the victims of National Socialist crimes at the historic site. Today, the museum comprises a total of 70 original buildings.

We were a group of four. The tour was for approx. 7 hours in the car. They sent us a large enough car so it was very comforting. Our driver gave us pit stops on the way when we requested and our guid in Krakow gave us some stop at the cafe and souvenir shops for us so we had some free time and learned interesting historical facts about Krakow. Very interesting and comforting experience in total. Breakfast and dinner is not included so I recommend that we bring some snacks on the tour.

Lodz is not an obvious city. An industrial past and perhaps still finding its future. But yet it is probably one of the most thought provoking cities I've ever been to. My guide was superb, Incredibly knowledgeable and easy company and also really brought the history to life. The story of Lodz is a haphazard series of events that it would be easy to loose the thread of but things were so well explained and organised,, that this never happened. Piotrkowska has a unique grandess and quaintness at once. Lodz may be a rough diamond but it is real hidden gem that was brought to life. Great tour and brilliantly delivered. With thanks for a great experience.
