The best available Specialty lodgings to stay near Georgia

April 18, 2023 Veronika Gaddis

While Atlanta is the anchor and capital of Georgia, you can aim in any direction to find distinctly different regions – from the tail of the Appalachians in the North to the rolling Piedmont hills and on down to the seaside marshes in the East. Atlanta lays claim to the state’s number one attraction – Stone Mountain State Park. They say it best - “Serious fun. Endless adventure.” Just 15 minutes from downtown, the world’s largest exposed granite dome is surrounded by 3,200 acres of natural beauty and stimulating activities for every member of the family – sky rides and hiking paths, laser shows and pedal boats along Stone Mountain Lake. Golfers tee it up, while red foxes dash across the fairways in a state where the Masters Golf Tournament creates revered green-jacket memories every year. It’s a long downhill ride down to historic Savannah, a ‘stone’s throw’ from the Atlantic and a virtual step back in time to Southern architecture and stately squares. St. Simon’s and Jekyll Islands offer barrier island beauty and a wonderful combination of outdoor activities, historic sites and artistic culture. Originally the private winter playground of wealthy northeasterners, Jekyll Island stretches along 10 miles of coastal beaches and inland marshes. Cycling and walking paths wind under moss-laden oaks, and a tour of Millionaire Village takes you back to those Cornelius Vanderbilt and J.P. Morgan days. The kid-friendly Summer Waves Water Park adds man-made fun to natural water sport activities. Coastal golf courses and sophisticated St. Simon’s Island appeal to moms, dads and vacationing couples.

Beautiful location, but food and service need work

Reviewed By Wendiggitty

The location and inn itself are beautiful. We stayed for 3 nights at this inn. I was hoping for a more personal bed & breakfast, but this is more like an upscale hotel for couples. The woman that greeted us was flippant and told us to "have fun" at least 6 times in the 5 minutes she showed us around - seemingly wanting to free herself from us. A family of three, we opted for the Tree Top room because it had a fold down futon for our son. The room and bathroom were very clean. The kitchenette was a nice feature, but the dishes were less than clean. The microwave had a drawer/oven for frozen pizzas which was very useful. When I went to make up the futon with the bedding provided, the blanket had been obviously used, and smelled as such. The unclean dishes and blanket could have easily gone unnoticed by housekeeping if they were put away by previous guests, so I cannot fault anyone for that. Food was OK at best. After each breakfast meal you choose from a list of 5 options for the following mornings breakfast. The first morning my husband and I ordered eggs benedict which was served cold. The second morning we each had the pecan waffle, which was a bit dry, but OK. The third morning we had "made to order" omlets. Order was wrong (I had asked for spinach). Bacon was substituted for spinach in the omlet, with 6 pieces of bacon on the side. Now, I normally love bacon, but this was ridiculous! So very, very salty! Packed with bacon, with salt and pepper on the top. I couldn't eat it, and staff asked how it was since I was obviously picking all the bacon out of it, so I told her honestly. She replied with how she was glad I told her, but didn't offer anything more, and came back from the kitchen with a small bottle of water to compensate! Why couldn't she offer me something else to eat?? I left there terribly hungry and very disappointed in my experience. Since we were expecting a bed AND breakfast, service and food should be better. I won't be returning here.

Peaceful Epworth by the Sea

Reviewed By MarnetteS

We took a trip to St. Simons Island for our first getaway after being cooped up from Covid. The island is an easy three-hour drive for us from Hilton Head Island. We have a particular interest in the St. Simon Trilogy books written by St. Simons historical novelist, Eugenia Price, and wanted to visit island locations she wrote about. We scored a 'two-fer" when we discovered Epworth By The Sea, a Methodist conference center, built on the grounds of the former Hamilton Plantation which Price writes about in the novel, "Lighthouse." Unfortunately, the free admission Moore Methodist Museum was closed because of Covid but we walked the peaceful beautiful grounds. Normally, the museum offers extensive information about Island History (St. Simons 360; Historical Video tour, Hamilton Plantation, Lovely Lane Chapel); Methodist History (John and Charles Wesley, Francis Asbury, Circuit Riders, Bishop Arthur J. Moore); Georgia History (Bishops, Missionaries, Women in Methodism); Nativities Collection (Over 85 international nativities); and, John Wesley Lecture (Free lecture on Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.). A Christian gift shop and book store complement the programs. A short drive leads to Gascoigne Bluff, location of the important saw mills on the Hamilton Plantation of the Lighthouse era. Two reconstructed tabby slave cabins adjacent to Epworth are worthy of a visit. They are maintained by the Cassina Garden Club. There is so much history on these grounds. The Epworth grounds are large including an auditorium, motel, historic buildings and a beautiful view of the water. Epworth was the name of the Wesley brothers', (founders of Methodism) home village in England. Members of the Methodist faith would find Epworth by the Sea a treasure trove of faith. I'm only sorry Covid prevented us from exploring the museum.

I enjoyed the grab and go breakfast. I was able to toast a bagel and grab a muffin. I would definitely stay there again.

Awesome stay—nice and clean

Reviewed By stephanielf123

This hotel is right off I-95. There are a few other hotels in area as well, but we chose this hotel because we needed a stovetop for cooking. The customer service of the front staff was excellent. The hotel was clean, updated, and the beds were comfortable. Our room had full refrigerator, stovetop, dishwasher, sink, table for eating, pull out sofa bed. We had two beds in one room and a separate living room with kitchen. There is a Winn-Dixie grocery store near by and a few restaurants like Chipotle, Moe’s, Panera, Five Guys and McDonalds. We would definitely stay again.

Unique lodge

Reviewed By Acecurlsgrl

First off, I want to point out that this place was beautiful, unique and quaint for our anniversary. The entire lot is very quiet and serene and a hidden gem in the woods. It does need updated in various places. Our spacious room seemed as if it could use some extra decor and pillows that didn't fall flat the moment our heads hit them. The bed was very comfy though. Bathroom was clean with fresh towels and toiletries provided (shampoo, conditioner, body wash). Wish I had known about the soaps ahead of time, as it would have been nice to not worry about packing such items that took up space when I was trying to pack light. So hopefully, now, that info will help others. A hairdryer is also provided. The pool was the main draw for us for choosing this location to stay and it was closed the majority of the time as it needed cleaned and repaired. We mentioned this to the employee there and she had it fixed by our last night staying but unfortunately, a huge thunderstorm rolled in and we couldn't enjoy it. There is no tv but we were completely fine with that. Just noting that for others. Free wifi is available. There is coffee available in the mornings but no breakfast. The only other issue was the lack of finding someone that worked there when we needed them for extra towels and other minimal issues. Apparently other guests had the same issue.

Special Find in Eastman GA

Reviewed By H911UProbertp

Landon was very responsive and accessible. Communication was quick and accurate, I appreciate that. I think it would be good to have some bottle water and light snacks in the common room upstairs; only thing available was K-cup coffee. Most B&B I stay in do have light snacks, bottle water, juice etc. Maybe some instructions on the fan/ceiling light switch….I had never seen one like that. Breakfast was good, coffee at breakfast was great; the k-cup coffee upstairs was very strong and not a quality product. The front entrance drive in front of the steps up to the door was blocked by a truck when I arrived at 8pm, so I had to park around side, in the rain and walk around; not sure why there was a truck blocking the entrance at 8pm on a Sunday night. But this place is a very special find in an out of the way place. I was pleased and would stay again!
