Incredible

This hotel was amazing. The Onsen was just beautiful and having the indoor and outdoor options was great. An incredible buffet breakfast and a traditional room. Could not fault this hotel. The lobby is beautiful and every detail is thought of. We had an 8 course Japanese dinner which was so divine words cannot do it justice.

Awone Shirakami Jyuniko

Surprisingly good!

Reviewed By KI-NRT

Awone Shirakami Jyuniko far exceeded our (our somewhat low) expectations. We went in thinking it would provide very rustic and basic accommodations, minimal service and cafeteria-style food. How wrong we were! While it's by no means a top luxury wilderness resort, Awone Shirakami Jyuniko ticks all of the boxes when it comes to having a comfortable and relaxing stay in a somewhat remote area. The cabins are rustic, but are spacious (separate bedroom and living room, and even a loft that has another bed) and decently furnished and appointed. It's country-style but not run down like many remote lodges that we've stayed at (especially in the U.S.) All of the basic amenities are on offer (towels, soap, shampoo, toothbrush/toothpaste, etc.) so this is more than a basic Air B&B style property. Our cabin was very close to the reception building as well as the restaurant (Akashobin) - a 2-minute walk, so quite convenient. There's also a gift shop that sells basic necessities as well as snacks on-site. There's also the convenience factor where you can park your vehicle right in front of your cabin. While the service from the staff are not super proactive and anticipatory, it's really not needed at a place like this (you will have hopefully done your homework prior to visiting a place like this.) They check you in and then you won't see any staff unless you go to the restaurant or need something at the store. Rooms are cleaned, and towels are refreshed daily. The grounds are well maintained and is a pretty sight, with mountains surrounding the area, perfectly manicured grounds and brightly-colored flowers planted throughout the premises... however, it's not overdone in a way that makes you feel like you're at Disneyland. Restaurant Akashobin was an absolute delight. While it's not Michelin-star quality and the service is a tad on the rushed side, we actually like how they dished out all of the offerings, pretty much at once (think Korean restaurant in this regard.) We were in and out in less than 75 minutes, which is great when you want to get to bed early to get a head start on the morning's activities. The number of dishes rivaled that of decent ryokans, and the quality of the food - while not super fancy - was top notch. Plenty of variety, fresh seafood and a few unique dishes thrown in for good measure. Given where Awone is located, it's a remarkable feat. Breakfast was also an enjoyable and hearty affair. It's buffet style (don't worry - everyone is required to mask up and wear lodge-supplied gloves while at the buffet area) with plenty of choices.. it's really a pretty decent spread, with a mixture of Western and Japanese choices. Let's just say you won't walk away hungry or unsatisfied. If there's one major nit to pick, it has to do with the lack of internet access in the cabins. I am aware of the remoteness of Awone, but nowadays, WiFi (at least in my opinion) has really become a bare necessity like electricity and running water. The fact that lodges in far more remote places (Africa, Alaska, etc.) can offer connectivity - even if it's not lightning fast - means that where there's a will there's a way. Ultimately, if you want to be in close proximity to the Juniko Lakes area, this is far and away the best choice. It's not like you will have many properties to choose from. But given that it offers solid accommodations, decent food and great value, Awone Shirakami Juniko should satisfy all but the most jaded luxury traveler.

Bad!

Booked a BBQ glamping cabin. They did not actually allow BBQ so there was not glamping except walking to toilet. Had to walk 15 min for bad buffet during covid. Exceptionally poor customer service. Quite rude through the trip. Strongly do not recommend :(

Looking for Snow Monsters

Great location for skiing a lift is just outside the door. It is a little away from the centre so if you are looking for action may this place will not suit. The staff speak a little English and are willing to assist. The meals so far are very traditional which for us is great so if you are not adventurous in your eating you will have to be a little choosy although there is plenty to tempt the taste buds. When we’re here the restaurant was not open for lunch so worth checking. The motel had a courtesy bus for pick ups when you, the info rang through to the motel if you are like us no phone service. Looking for to an Onsen. Highly recommend this place. The on suite in our room is a little out dated but very clean & functional.

A wonderful place to travel with your dogs.

Reviewed By chuchuschow

The location is amazing. Akabeko borders on the national park, you are very much surrounded by forest. The layout of the place is that there is a lodge at the top of the hill, where you check in and that also houses a restaurant. Sloping down the hill behind the lodge are a few dozen cottages, some stand alone, and some seem to be chalet or apartment type. If you are traveling with dogs, and most guests seemed to be, then the dog run is down at the bottom of the hill and is a good sized area, about the size of two tennis courts. We traveled with two dogs and the cottage could have easily accommodated a whole family, there is a kitchen, a second floor bedroom, and a tatami room with a kotatsu. We didn't even use the upstairs bedroom as there are futon, blankets and pillows in the tatami room. If you are skiing or boarding at the nearby resorts, the living room is spacious and the heaters are powerful enough to dry anything overnight. Many windows with views in all directions allow natural light throughout the day. I really loved having a kitchen to prepare food for the dogs and ourselves, and while you can choose to eat up at the lodge restaurant, we opted to have dinner in the cottage, the warm, and friendly staff delivered a set to make sukiyaki, and on the second night, seafood nabe. This was the winter menu, I believe the warmer months offer a BBQ. Both meals were delicious, and the volume was more than enough for the both of us. There is free parking right outside every cottage, if you are traveling in winter, the staff plow the access road every morning. We , I guess, unusually, traveled by train, the nearest station being Inawashiro, it's about 16km away from Akabeko, and the staff very kindly came to pick us up. I'm not sure if it's a shuttle service they regularly offer, I think they were just being kind. They also dropped us off back there after we checked out. This all being done on icy, mountain roads too. I couldn't have been more impressed and grateful. The alternative would be to take a bus up to the top of the mountain, or a taxi. I never expect anything fancy when I travel with the dogs, I'm just so happy that we can take a holiday together, so I'm not bothered if the place we stay at has anything but basic facilities, but this place , for the location, and the price is far and away the best place we have stayed together. We all had a great time there. My partner, and I both wished we could have stayed longer, and are looking forward to going back in the Spring.
