Photography trip for Bears

Reviewed By abc400

We spent 6 days at the lodge with a small group of fellow photographers with the aim of photographing the grizzly bears on the salmon run We had an excellent time. Our main guide Curt was very understanding of our needs and put us where we could get some great shots All the guides were extremely kind and helpful, the staff at the lodge were excellent and friendly - keep hold of your chef - the food was great We also took a flight out to Hallo Bay to see and photograph the bears there - a highly recommended trip, the flight is beautiful and the background stunning

Katmai Lodge

Trip of a Lifetime! A must see destination!

Reviewed By Alliekantor

Katmai Lodge Alaska had an incredible location perched on top of the river bank of the Alagnak River. The wonderful staff all greeted as our plane landed at the lodge, they promptly took our luggage and brought it to our room before we were even done registering and getting our fishing license. I am not an experienced angler, but with the help of our wonderful guide I caught my fish limit each day. Not only did I catch my limit of fish each day, but I caught 4 out of the 5 species of salmon including a few rainbow trout. While out on the river the views and wildlife were spectacular. I can not even count the amount of beaver damns larger than an SUV that I saw. Eagles soaring above and landing in gigantic nexts. Moose grazing in the fields with their young, and bears on the shoreline fishing as well. On the next day we took a fly out to Katmai National Park where we were within 5-10 ft of Brown Bears as they stood atop the Brooks Falls and caught the salmon in their mouth as the salmon tried jumping up the river. While at the park we saw 20-25 bears along with a few Cubs (which were my favorite). An incredible experience to say the least, I felt like I was standing in a National Geographic documentary. After a long day out on the river you return to the lodge where the dinners each night were prepared by excellent chefs. (I swear I gained a few pounds on this trip). The meals we had while on the trip consisted of prime rib, steak, a full thanksgiving meal, and not to forget the 2-3 desserts each night. Lastly you return to your cabin (after the beds/ cabin have been refreshed by the housekeeping staff) to watch the sun slowly graze the horizon. With not a building in sight for miles, this truly is one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen. To wrap it up, Katmai Lodge Alaska is a must visit destination and I nightly recommend to anyone who is considering a trip to Alaska!

Awesome fishing trip!

Reviewed By Linda L

Alaska Rainbow Lodge is by far the best fishing trip I have ever had! My husband had been once before prior to bringing me, and after all the wonderful things he mentioned about this place I just had to try it out. The experience exceeded everything I could imagine this trip being. The lodge is amazing with all it's charm and coziness. Chip and Amanda, the owners, truly care about their staff and their customers. They are always around to chat with you about your day, the weather, or anything you might need to make your stay more enjoyable. In fact, my waders had a leak in them the very 1st day of our fishing trip, but within 5 minutes from getting back to the lodge someone was handing me a pair of waders to use. This lodge provides everything you would need for your fishing trip from fishing equipment to fishing waders which is nice if you don't want to lug all this stuff from home. It's especially great in case you break, damage or need gear or fishing attire. Being the only woman fishing amongst all the men, the staff and owners, and of course the fishermen made me feel as one of the guys. There is a personal chef on staff that cooks amazing meals and not just something to feed you, but food you would be served from a 5-star restaurant. Absolutely delicious! You more than likely will go home gaining a few pounds... From steaks, and prime rib, to a seafood extravaganza toped off with Alaska King Crab legs. At breakfast there is a special of the day along with serve to order items. For lunch no matter what the weather conditions while fishing your guide will cook and serve a hot homemade soup with warm sandwiches. An amazing display of hors d'oeuvres greets you upon your arrival back to the lodge that could fill you up before you even make it to the 3 course dinner. Just absolutely crazy yummy! The staff is hands on some of the nicest and most attentive people you could ask for. They seem to read your mind and are their for you at a moments notice. AND, as for the fishing.... it was everything I had hoped it would be. We went in September so the focus was on the trout and if you want to catch big trout this is the place to go. They are such a beautiful fish and so much fun to catch! I'm not a fly fisherman, so I used a spinning rod and reel but it didn't keep me from catching fish. Each day we picked a different location to fly out to and each location was special and unique in its own way. I learned quickly that at "the flats" you have an opportunity to catch big fish! I caught trout that were 22 in, 26 in, 28 in, and ended the day with a 25.5, and those are just the ones we measured... My husband caught lots of trout as well, but this trip I out fished him - I believe you call it "beginners luck". We fished on a river where the bears came out to join you. While you're fishing they are out fishing too. It was so amazing to be fishing while the bears come and go around you. No need to fear as they aren't interested in people and your trusty guides keep you at a safe distance. But, the fishing along this river was amazing. And, having the snow covered mountains surrounding you makes this an amazing location to fish. You do fly in and out of the lodge every day to your fishing spot and the views from the float planes are absolutely breathtaking. All 3 pilots are trust worthy, and safety is their top priority. But, again you are reading this review for the fish and while the weather in Alaska can be unpredictable the fish are not. Every place/day we fished we caught beautiful trout. We got skunked one day as the fish just weren't there, but we made up for it the next day, and the next day, and the next day!!!!!! As for the fishing guides - you will not meet another group of guys that are so attentive to their customers or have the love of fishing more than these guys. They truly make their priority be you and your fishing. While we did tend to use Eric most of the time - whom I do highly recommend... Any one of the guides would be amazing to have. Seriously, they absolutely love what they do and enjoy helping you catch a fish of lifetime. If you want to have an experience of a lifetime I would highly suggest booking a trip to Alaska Rainbow Lodge!

Great fun

We spent a week at Bear Trail, the lodge, food, staff and fishing were great. We did three fly outs to the American, Brooks and Margot, each unique and lots of fun. I landed a 30.5” Rainbow Trout, a new personal best and had my picture added to the bar wall ! I landed three King Salmon over 35” (longest 40”) on the Naknek and 25 Dolly Varden at Margot. Great fun. All the guides worked hard to put you in a position to land the fish of a lifetime.

Salmon, where are you?

i booked with Tony in the winter of 2019 for 2020. i lost my wife due to cancer in April 2020, Tony refunded ALL of my down payment. i then booked in the early spring 2021, 3 of us went July 25 thru July 30. ther was much good and much disappointment. The hospitality staff were awesome, competent and friendly , cooks great , Raquel was great in housekeeping. i told Tony i wanted to fish for Sockeyes because that was the only salmon left for me to catch. When we arrived i was told the sockeyes were gone, upstream and spawned out 2 weeks ago.i was very disappointed to hear this. Then we were told the silvers were on there way any time, there were 2 caught the entire week, that included all fishermen/women. Then we were told we were fishing for Chums, i caught 1 all week, the entire crew of about 8 caught less than 20 all week. The Guides were friendly and nice all the way , but very inexperienced. Every guide was a first year guid, mine was 22 YO. They were not on the same page and dis agreed on things, the fishing was beyond awful. Being in the great land was special but i was extremely disappointed.this was my 4th fishing trip to AK , the other 3 i caught a ton of fish. i felt bad for the 2 guys with me, it was their first trip and they did not bring home a single fish. I will seek more experienced guides in the future, after all we spent over 15 k the 3 of us

Naknek River Camp

Adventure of lifetime enhanced by NRC staff

Reviewed By qsmamo

We just finished a week at Naknek River Camp and could not be more elated. It was one of the most amazing life experiences (and we have had many including at many “camps” throughout the world). Every member of the staff from Phyllis and Jim, the owners, to “Dryfly John”, the coordinator of guides who ensures every guest is getting the experience s/he desires, to every member of the team constantly checking with you to see if you need anything, are outstanding. Truly, all the guests were gushing about the experience. We came to Naknek on a recommendation from a friend’s cousin (we had told him we were looking for a place we could take our grandson fishing in Katmai that we could afford…NRC perfectly fit that need). The experience provided, including the cabins, clean bathrooms and showers, while not “luxury” were certainly way more than we hoped we would be provided. The guides are experienced and professional going out of their way to ensure the client’s needs are met, our grandson is obsessed with catching trophy trout…Steve even fished with him after dinner several days, late into the night to make that happen and happen and happen. I use ratings for my trip planning, therefore do not “overrate” (which I hope others do as well), so if I give 5 stars it has to be worth 5 stars, in this case it more than is and (as I’ve seen on other ratings) I wish I couple give a few more. Your challenge will be getting a reservation because the camp is not large (another huge benefit) and I think it is being “discovered”).

Great Adventure!

My adult son and I just returned from a 4 day visit to Gold Creek Lodge and I was pleasantly surprised at how well we were accommodated for such a small wilderness lodge. My son is vegan and was concerned because there are no other food options outside this remote lodge. But after he called ahead of time to talk to their amazing chef he told me he had "zero concerns." We werent disappointed. The food was very good and the service even better. We planned to visit Brooks Falls three times but ran into some unexpected weather and fuel issues. Seems like Kat worked all night arranging for alternative transportation and sure enough, we were on our way the next morning. Kat is clearly invested in her guests having a great time and is a logistical wizard. Magical trip!
