Friendly hotel with welcoming staff

Fabulous experience in this friendly hotel. All of the staff were very welcoming, rooms were comfortable (excellent showers) and food was excellent including an imaginative and varied breakfast offer. Well situated for exploring the region and would highly recommend. Florian was an exceptional host alongside the attentive and cheerful owners, and the resident dog is a friendly member of the team too!

Ski holiday

Reviewed By IramA36

Arrived at 5 pm on Saturday .. check in was very fast and we were given our room key. Parked at the back of the hotel and this had access to the hotel and near toilets and ski boot room which is free to use with lockers.. our room was on the second floor and the hotel has no lifts .. so taking up luggage needed a few trips.. we settled into our room had our evening meal and were able to get our ski passes from the tourist office opposite and ski hire equipment on the night of arrival.. the room was clean and comfortable and there was lots of storage space for suitcases and clothes .. tv and kettle with tea / coffee making facilities.. we were lucky enough to have a mountain and river view.. it’s stunning … we ventured out the following morning and the hotel is approx 150 yards from the ski lifts over the bridge .. so not too far to begin your skiing .. the area has lots of shops to get basics like milk bread should you require. We stayed half board and breakfast was continental , hot beverage machines, juices , jams , cold meats cheese , croissants bread and choc spread etc.. they also had bacon sausage and eggs … this was served from 7.30am as the ski lifts don’t open until 9am … evening meals were served at 7pm and we had such a great experience of evening meals .. we had pasta soups bread salads fondue .. beef and chicken fondue .. and dessert.. my partner wasn’t keen on all the desserts on offer but they offered him a cheese board instead and I saw other people being given alternatives if they didn’t want what was on the menu … the food was amazing with great service and it was so much better than expected so honestly don’t hesitate to go half board … we had a fabulous stay at this hotel .. it was very warm and comfortable .. the staff don’t speak English very well but we’re always prepared to use google translate to assist… the manager even helped us start our car one day as our battery was flat … can’t fault this place and it’s a lovely resort for skiers with everything you need on the doorstep of this hotel.. i look forward to perhaps returning to this hotel one day and I would highly recommend it !!

Pas comme avant

Maybe because we have been coming to his hotel for more than 8 years, we still have memories of the way it used to be, so this year when we came during the last December school holidays, we were a bit disappointed by our experience. That is why this year, I have given a 3 star rating, rather than at least a 4. We have always chosen a hotel room at the center with the option "pension complete" (full meal service), although the center also allows you to rent apartments. As the years go by, the hotel doesn't seem as nice as it used to be. - Before, we used to have free snowshoeing outings every day (when we went this year, showshoeing was limited to 3 times a week, weather permitting). - The director at the hotel used to know us by name and tell us where the supplies were if we ran out of basic things you would expect from a hotel like toilet paper (this time around, the new director told us we had to buy our own supplies if we ran out, which the main office I had called to confirm this told us was wrong of him to ask of us). (Note that the hotel only supplies a couple of bars of soap in the shower, so bring your own shampoo.) - Before, the hotel used to invite outside performers to entertain the guests. Now, only the animation team entertained us at night and on the last night, the kids in the kids' clubs put on the final show. While the staff and the kids did as a good a job as they could, it wasn't the same as having a local musician or poetry reader come to mix things up a bit. - The restaurant manager used to seat us in the main dining room for the holiday meal, as she knew where we liked to sit every day. This time, the staff had forgotten to make a table for us, so we ended up in a side room with hardly any service or apology for what had happened. That soured our holiday meal a little, even though the meal itself was very good (unlike in previous years though, you only had the choice of a red or white bottle of wine at the table, and not both). - A small detail but there was a woman who seemed a bit grumpy working at the bar occasionally. We were convinced that when you asked for a decaf coffee, she still gave you a caffeinated one because she couldn't be bothered to take the time to change her usual routine. We learned quickly to ask the man who worked there for our coffees because he had a better sense of customer service. Unlike in previous years, the hotel has stopped serving coffees with a speculoos biscuit. Another example of how the center has been tightening its belt. - The ambiance was very French- music, entertainment, guests, etc. The only non-French at the hotel when we were there worked in the hotel restaurant (Bulgarians and one English guy). Fortunately I speak French, but if you don't, I'm not sure how much you would be able to know about the daily activities, as unlike in previous years, not all the activities were listed on the printed program. I believe the activities director told me he could speak languages other than French, but I never heard him do that during my stay. If you can get a discount through your insurance company or travel agency, you really get what you pay for. Our room had a bathroom with a sink and shower, a separate toilet, a small corridor with a bunk bed for the kids, a main room with 2 single beds, a small desk and 2 chairs, and a small balcony with a drying rack. Heating in the room worked great. Note that the cleaning lady only came once during the middle of the week to change your towels and freshen things up a little. There's also a hot tub and sauna in the hotel that you can buy tickets for, but we never tried it. You can also get preferential rates to the public pool down the street through the hotel. Some other things that haven't changed about the place: the welcome drink and meeting on your first night, hot red wine on another night and crepes as well, the hotel mascot Poupie (sp?) and the hotel group dance (similar to what Club Med does). Activities during the week also include a visit to the cheese factory in town (for a small fee) and complimentary exercise classes in the mornings (even though the hotel itself does not have a gym). Really, the best parts of the holiday were the direct access to the ski slopes (just outside the door) and the kids' club (the animation staff, many of whom have been there in previous years, are adorable). We lucked out this year and got a room on a high floor with a view over the slopes, but if you want to assure yourself a particular room, you have to pay to reserve it now. The hotel has made huge improvements with their Wifi, which you can only access from around the bar area. The restaurant also serves traditional Savoyard dishes (raclette one night during the week) and soups and pasta for lunch and dinner if you think some of the proposed adult meals look a little dodgy. Complimentary red, white or rose wine is always available at lunch and dinner. Another plus is that the complimentary transport to neighboring towns in the valley is within walking distance as well as the public bus that takes you to the closest TGV station, so you don't necessarily need a car. We hope that next year, we can kick the rating back up for this place. We'll see. Bonnes vacances!

The Saint Charles is a superb hotel in a superb location. The room & bed we had are very comfortable, the balconies are facing the ski slopes and you can ski down back just to the corridor that leads to the hotel ski room. Breakfasts and dinners are excellent. In addition: a warm swimming pool and cocooning massages. We are considering extending our stays a little longer each year. The perfect place to be!

Very Friendly Staff and Great Spa

Reviewed By Amanda H

We have just returned from a week here and on arrival were greeted very warmly by the extremely helpful and friendly staff. The location at the bottom of the lifts/piste was great, but be aware that its not the main lift so there is only a small supermarket, ski hire and restaurant around, you will need to go up to the main resort for a choice of shopping/restaurants. The apartment was really well equipped with a large balcony and we ended up with a 3 bed duplex, instead of the 2 bed we booked. Downstairs was really spacious and clean, with a shower room and a kitchen with pretty much everything you would need. Upstairs was not as good, as two of the bedrooms were in the eaves with very little headroom and the bathroom was absolutely tiny. Fine for children , not so great for adults. The pool area was great, loads of seating, 2 x jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, which were all working and hot. Great after a day on the slopes. Really nice for a relaxing holiday, but not right in the heart of the action if that's what you prefer.

Booked into here for an overnight to do a col the next day. The room was basic but very clean and had private facilities. Dinner was a communal affair which was good because I was on my own.Melon to start followed by baked sea trout fillets with almonds which were good but the tagliatelle was very variable in texture. The dessert was fresh apricots which were passable but the peaches were like cannonballs and not worth trying. Breakfast was a much better affair with a self service buffet. Good muesli, yogurt and bread. Wifi is restricted to the area around reception. There is a pleasant bar with a terrace where I supped a couple of beers. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. If you like youth hostels then this is right up your street. Did I mention that dinner bed & breakfast came to 53€? I would stay here again but eat out in the evening.

Le Val d'Ambin

Camping Val d'Ambin is located in a quiet and spacious spot, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Located in the municipality of Bramans Val d'Ambin, rising to over 1200 meters above sea level, there are two towns: Bramans on the ancient Roman road that Hannibal and his 37 elephants would have taken many years ago and the village of Le Verney on the more modern mountain pass road of Mont Cenis and Iseran. Our campsite was first created more than fifty years ago, at which time it only had a few camping pitches and a single cold shower! Since then the site has evolved and has quadrupled its size while keeping its authenticity and mountain character. Today the campsite covers over 5 acres, and is equipped with every necessary comfort :

Great place.

Great camping spot. The receptionist was good enough to offer us a spot in the shade which was great in the summer heat. The campsite is huge, probably the biggest one Iv been in the region. Clean toilets and a cheap overall price.

Lovely stay at well priced apartment

Reviewed By smacel

We stayed in a two bedroom apartment while skiing here. The apartment was very well equipped and there was enough space for us all. The beds were comfy and we had a nice balcony. There was a restaurant and pool in the main building. The kids loved the outdoor (heated) pool. The bar was nice and the restaurant was ok. The staff here were all very helpful and friendly. The apartments were about 200m from the slopes and it’s possible to ski straight into the rear of the main building.
