Curling Hotel & Bar

Excellent value, great location and lovely staff

Reviewed By Pin1324

We had to move to the Curling last minute due to our booked accommodation elsewhere being sub standard. They were unbelievably helpful and made our stay very pleasant. The staff here are really outstanding and so helpful. The location is great, easy access to the slopes and a really good locker room at ground floor level. The bar is really lovely, great gin and tonics and reasonably priced. The rooms were far better than we were expecting for a three star hotel and the beds were very comfortable and everything was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was lovely with everything we would have wanted. They do have a slight problem with noise from surrounding bars but being in such a central location that can't really be helped. I was so impressed and grateful to the Curling for rescuing our holiday!

I would have reviewed this hotel as excellent if the service at breakfast had been a little more friendly. As a family with children we didn’t always all have breakfast together - depending on who was heading to the slopes when. This appeared to be an exceptional inconvenience to the breakfast team. All other staff were fantastic and couldn’t do enough to accommodate our needs.

Fabulous place

Large and clean apartment, with two bathrooms and more space than we've ever experienced while skiing. But best of all were the lovely staff who were always so kind and helpful. Another huge bonus was its location - 100m from supermarket, and centre of Val Claret, but very peaceful and quiet at night. Also the amazing pool, sauna and harman complex was impeccably looked after and very welcome at the end of a days skiing.

Restaurant review

Reviewed By drsgbaker

We had a reservation for dinner and arranged to meet friends for a drink beforehand. We got there early to find a singer in the bar and although she was very good she was also very loud - so much so that we decamped to the hotel across the road until our designated meeting time. When we went back in we managed to find a quieter area of the bar. We had some fantastic cocktails and the service was excellent. When we went into the restaurant they showed us to a massive round table which would have been great if there had been 5 of us as originally intended but we were only 4. Despite the restaurant being busy they found us a smaller more suitable table. The food was delicious and the service was very good. Couple of small criticisms (apart from the loudness of the entertainment); the lighting in the restaurant was a little too bright - particularly with a spotlight right above us - and the bar area is a little stark. Overall though it was a nice evening with good food, good wine and good service.

Amazing!

We've stayed several times and have loved each visit, its definitely the best hotel in Tignes. The front of house staff are fantastic and really go above and beyond with helping you from the minute you make your booking to the moment you depart. I would say that some of the restaurant staff, the guys in suits, have a level of arrogance that wears thin very quickly, however the food and ambience make up for it. We will continue to return.

Lovely stay in traditional hotel in Tignes Le Lac

Reviewed By Mattpond

The staff and food at this hotel are the stand out features. They really couldn’t do enough for us from the moment we arrived. The food was a very high standard. On 2 nights the kitchen staff agreed to feed our 2 in the bar at 6pm and then plate up our meal to eat in our room as the kids were so tired from their full days on the slopes. As I said they couldn’t so enough to make our stay very enjoyable.

Residence CGH Le Kalinda

Convenience and comfort

Reviewed By Sarah F

We were lucky enough to spend 4 weeks at Le Kalinda in March. We had originally booked the White Pearl in La Plagne which is a whole other story as the construction was not finished in time, but suffice to say Le Kalinda was not our first choice and we had some doubts before we arrived. I'm happy to say we ended up having a really enjoyable stay, and would definitely come back. There are a few points to note : Because we were there for a long time, we wanted more space and booked a 3 room apartment which sleeps 6. Note that it is 3 rooms in total, not 3 bedrooms. There are two bedrooms and a sofa bed in the living room. We had two bathrooms but I gather some of the 3 room apartments only have 1. This probably works fine with young children but a group of 6 adults would find it very cramped. The kitchen was modern and well equipped, although there is very little workspace so you need to prepare food on the dining table. We had a fantastic sunny balcony overlooking the learner slopes, chairs and tables were provided and we had some lovely lunches out in the sun. The Spar shop in the resort is very high quality (better than the E. Leclerc in Aime La Plagne!) but it is expensive. There is an excellent SuperU in Bourg St Maurice, about 25 minutes' drive away. I had a lovely massage in the spa, and the pool and heat treatment rooms are impressive. However you need to bring your own towels, robes, slippers etc. as nothing is provided. We asked for a quiet room and were in block F (Korrigans). This is furthest from the reception, but is genuinely ski in, ski out (not all the blocks are) and far enough away from the restaurants and other common areas to be very quiet. Block E (Pixies) is bigger but much the same. It's a short walk to all the amenities. If you want to be closer to the action, go for block A (where the Reception, spa and laundry are located) or C (where the restaurants are). Ski lockers were spacious and do provide heated racks for boots. Reception and maintenance staff were all very friendly and professional and generally dealt with our minor problems (a blocked sink and a broken saucepan) promptly and efficiently. We had an issue with a piece of equipment in the apartment during our stay which was handled by the Residence Manager, M. Loïc Le Torriellec, who spoke excellent English and dealt with the matter very calmly and professionally. He took the time to ask about our stay and experience of Le Kalinda and it was a pleasure to deal with him. You are expected to clean the kitchen before you leave, including emptying rubbish into the outside bins, and you will be charged if you don't. This is made abundantly clear both on the CGH website and at the property and really wasn't a huge amount of work when we left - I mention this only because other reviewers have commented that they were surprised by it. You also need to strip beds and leave with the towels in a pile in the bathroom. Again not a big deal for us. Changeover day is Saturday and EVERYBODY leaves and arrives on that day, so there is obviously a huge amount of pressure on staff to get all the apartments cleaned and turned around for new arrivals. On that point, note that this is true for much of the accommodation in the French Alps, and traffic on Saturdays can be horrendous as pretty much everybody is on the N90 and traffic is regulated (i.e. held at a standstill periodically) to prevent build up of exhaust fumes in tunnels. The Police also routinely close off side roads off the N90 to prevent them being used as cut throughs. It is worth therefore bringing water and snacks for the journey and being prepared for the fact that a journey which Google Maps tells you will take two hours might end up taking four or five. It was very warm while we were there, and we had typical spring skiing conditions - one of the good things about the location is that you can download on the gondola rather than skiing down a fairly tricky road that is either icy or slushy depending on time of day. I agree with other comments that beginners would struggle. There are two magic carpets that bring you up from the bottom gondola station to the apartments. Tignes 1800 is a purpose built "village" that is essentially Le Kalinda, a couple of other apartment blocks and a few chalets. It is quiet, and there are few apres ski options. Tignes Les Brevieres is a more traditional village that has more restaurants and bars, and can be accessed via the gondola (no charge for pedestrians if you have non-skiers in your group). Tignes Le Lac is accessible via regular free bus service, and has a wide choice of bars and restaurants. Val d'Isere is a short drive away and has more choice still. If you want to be right at the heart of things you'll be better off in Le Lac or Val, but if you want a peaceful ski in / out location with comfortable accommodation and good service, I highly recommend Le Kalinda.
