Typical budget motel

Reviewed By Malcolm P

The rooms are quite adequate for an overnight stay...clean and have everything one would expect for the price. Efficient reception experience .. breakfast rather haphazard but good selection. Did not have dinner but menu looked varied with several choices. On busy dual carriageway with church nearby with noisy clock chimes till mid-evening. Request a room at the rear which overlooks a grassed area. Ample parking .. apparently secure at night.

Good base for us at a reasonably priced hotel

Reviewed By 725emiliem

We spent a week here. We wanted somewhere we we could explore an area of France we had never visited as well as go exploring in Belgium too. This hotel is really set up of business travel. It’s reflected in their price, room size and how the hotel restaurant is ran (closed Friday evening till Monday evening), breakfast is available every day but evening meals are not. The room was very clean. The a/c in our room was not very powerful and our room got quite stuffy. The cleaners were very friendly and polite. The hotel staff were professional. The reception is only manned till 17:00. There is a large bakery practically next door which is open till late (19:30 ish). There are a variety of restaurants/fast food outlets near the train station. We ate at the hotel restaurant in the evening twice. The other nights we bought bits and bobs from the supermarket and bakery. 500 meters away is a laundrette which is open from 8am till 8pm which we used. I would recommend having a car if you were to stay here so you can go and explore further a field. We have had a lovely holiday exploring this part of France and Belgium.

Excellent stay in a friendly hotel

Reviewed By Marion560

My husband and I stayed in this hotel this week for 3 nights while we were visiting friends in the area. The room we had was large with a big walk in shower. It is a very clean and friendly hotel, the owner very helpful. The restaurant is across the road and the owner is the chef. We were a party of 8 and ate there on our last night and it was a superb meal. We shall certainly stay there again when we visit Maubeuge in the future. Just one thing to note. Our GPS took us to a house with number 89 on the same road, however, if you drive away from Maubeuge on the same road you will come to the hotel, also numbered 89.

Rude Bar Staff and No Wifi

Reviewed By Daeyboy1980

I was not expecting anything memorable from our stay here but it turned out to be memorable for the wrong reasons. The bar and restaurant staff had no patience and were at times plain rude. The main issue was the lack of Wifi at the hotel, after daily complaints which brought shrugs of the shoulders and bewildered looks of confusion we gave up. This is terrible as we expect fast Wifi at any hotel 3 star and above there were many business people staying there and I can't believe a hotel would such a poor internet service, they just did not care. Good points were the food was ok, rooms were clean but no air-conditioning. Would not recommend this hotel.

Booked the Abbey - stayed in a care home!

Reviewed By A327IGlauraw

Where do I even start: We arrived after a very long drive due to fuel price protests. Fires and blockages at almost every roundabout. We walked past the beautiful abbey and checked in at reception in the modern block. The lady didn’t speak a word of English but I can get by with my French. As she was describing the way to the room we thought something wasn’t quite right as she had not told us to go outside. There was a commotion in reception with an older lady but we didn’t think anything of it at the time. As we went to lift there was a book on the side which roughly translated as a brochure for an old peoples residential home! On entering the lift there was a little old man with us wearing his pj’s and walking with a zimmer frame. The “a la carte” menu advertised on the website was shown in the lift and was for a soft diet, soup, quiche and caramel pudding. We got to the room and dumped our bags. We needed to go out for food as the children had not eaten and it was way past their bedtime. On the way out there was no one at reception everywhere was closed. We couldn’t complain about the miscommunication that we were actually in a care home but booked into the beautiful Chateau. We didn’t even have a view of the Abbey out of our window! When we returned back to the room we realised we had one bathrobe, one set of slippers, one bath towel and one hand towel for four people. There was also only two little UHT pots of milk so we had to share a coffee. The room was very clinical, I’m guessing it was ready for a resident to move into and bring all their pictures and ornaments etc. Breakfast was ok but very basic. When I asked for a coffee it came black. When I asked for milk and a cup of tea I was offered a tea bag but no hot water and still no milk. The staff then changed so I’m assuming the message wasn’t passed on. By that time we were joined by 3 elderly residents who were waited on by the staff, nothing was too much trouble for them. We left as soon as we could. As soon as I left I emailed booking.com to complain. The hotel have refused to communicate with them as I didn’t complain while we were there, despite there being no one to complain to! Unfortunately we had to stay as we couldn’t get anywhere else. I’ve added photos- I didn’t take many! You can see the abbey to the left and the care home to the right. Oh there’s also a funeral parlour on site too! I was called 6 days before our stay to say our room was no longer available and I had to book elsewhere. I explained how disappointed I was as I now had to find an alternative stay after having this booked for months. I also explained that the trip was in aid of the anniversary of my mum passing away and it was to make a difficult weekend a little more bearable. They called back 3 days later to say they would honour the booking, unfortunately for us I’m am guessing they didn’t check we were getting what we paid for. The moral of the story is even if the pictures look beautiful- check that is where you’re actually staying!

Rex Hotel

Sorry, but worse hotel I've stayed at.....

Reviewed By llamenda

We were just passing through and this place showed up on my cars navigation system. I did no research, nor did I look at the room first. My mistake. So - hair in bed, tiny thin pillows, matress and towels. Ceiling was falling apart. It was very cheap tho, so I guess if you are just looking for a place to lay your head and aren't fussy at all than you could sleep here.......
