The best available hotels & places to stay near Anchorage

August 5, 2022 Leonarda Pillsbury

Set amid the coastal Chugach Mountains, Anchorage defies popular visions of polar ice caps and frozen tundra. It’s also warmer than you think (averaging 65 degrees in summer), making conditions ideal for sight-seeing or taking on uniquely Alaskan opportunities like arctic biking or touring the fjords of Prince William Sound. In the winter, you can ski, dogsled or do both simultaneously by "skijoring," which is cross-country skiing while being towed by a dog. Hey, it's no crazier a winter sport than the biathlon.

Poor cruise crowd and tour experience

Reviewed By Neal M

Although used by tour groups for overnight accommodation, they seriously lack experience with managing large groups. Check-in took over 2-hours with no system for notifying guests when keys were ready, telling guests to simply get back in line to check again - eventually they resorted to yelling out names. Room was clean but unclear if bottled water was complimentary. Bell hops work very hard but schedule for luggage was 2-hour span, starting at 6 a. m. Morning bus loading was hectic with staff yelling out directions, no system again for when or how to load which did not match the printed schedule. Overall, the experience is that the hotel wanted to improve stays but getting in cruise tour support business, but the management is not engaged leaving the staff to take the brunt of disappointment from the customers.

Their food at breakfast offered a great variety and the attendant was really attentive. My room was really clean and smelled nice. Front desk was friendly and always willing to answer my questions. I really like the location of the hotel as it was close to everything. Can't wait to come back!

Too expensive for short overnight

Reviewed By Jim B

We arrived at 9 PM, left at 7 AM, so staying at a 5 Star resort was a poor decision on my part. The hotel was upscale, but has some rinky-dink A/C system for the rooms which many people complained about. Rooms were stuffy. Restaurant was very good for the light dinner we had. Community shuttle system is so-so. For $400/night would expect to hotel is have it's own shuttle system and good a/c. The staff was accommodating- when we couldn't get our room to cool, they allowed me to pick from 4 different rooms that I checked. We moved and it was OK. Clearly the staff knows the drill. We slept well in the end.

Nice Location

Reviewed By Jim B

The hotel is located on the edge of Lake Hood, the largest seaplane base around. Right near the main airport. Rooms were comfortable and clean. We had breakfast and lunch in the hotel. both were fine, but not exceptional. The staff was stretched and tired. Tried to accommodate where they could but weren't going out of their way. More staff from Europe was just arriving the day we were there. Reasonable value for the cost.

Good Hotel - Needs to Improve Shuttle Service

Reviewed By Bigamus

As a Diamond Member who has stayed at many Hilton's all over the world, I am consistently impressed with the professionalism of this chain. Let me just say, the room was fine; clean and in great shape. However, the one thing a hotel must do, if it provides the service, is have a reliable shuttle service to the airport. It's an absolute must. And unfortunately, this one failed. Despite the repeated attempts of the admittedly baffled front desk worker, the shuttle simply refused to appear. The woman called and called again, and was told that he was '5 minutes away' several times, but didn't show up for over 40 minutes. Even though the airport is a 12-15 minute drive away. We made our flight, but I would build in some additional time getting to the airport, or have the number of a taxi service just in case this happens to you.
