Deep Ellum Hostel

We are an independent hostel located in the heart of the most eclectic and vibrant neighborhood in Dallas... Deep Ellum! This bustling district is the epicenter for nightlife, live music, venues, bars, restaurants, breweries, and art. Things are always lively in Deep Ellum, especially on the weekends! The Deep Ellum Hostel opened in 2018 after undergoing an extensive renovation project that has highlighted many of the century-old details throughout the historic building. We offer a mix of private suites and shared dorm style rooms, all appointed with comforts and modern amenities to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Downstairs, you'll find our attached bar, Booty's Street Food! Serving up international street food and global cocktails, the bar keeps a busy calendar full of music, events, and shows. Please note: Deep Ellum is a boisterous entertainment district. We are surrounded by several bars and venues, including the onsite bar. Things can be noisy, usually until 2am on the weekends. If you are a light sleeper or intending to go to bed early, we are probably not a good fit for you! We do enforce quiet hours within the hostel after 12am.

Not hostel like what we’re used to in Europe. Kind of bullying. And unhelpful when asked about how to move around.

Reviewed By sara-bear-cervantes

My experience was vastly different bc Christian (front desk staff) and his buddy (also a front desk staff) decided it was a good idea to admonish me to the point of bullying. At 4am I asked to be moved bc my high roommate wouldn’t let me sleep. The hostel smelled like weed which is hella illegal in TX. If I wanted to I would have been able to call the cops when Christian threatened me to throw me out at 4am. Reason: I said “this is so infuriating I’m feeling stabby” which he took and ran with to make it seem like I was crazy despite the fact I apologized “for my language” and asked again to move me. There are cameras in the hostel so y’all feel free to double check this but Christian pretty much went over the counter to wag his finger at me. Like dude!! I get it your angry I said the wrong thing at 4am but the high roommate gets away scotch free. And then said roommate follows me upstairs as I’m packing to say “I’m glad you’re leaving this room” and then next morning -cherry on top- the other guy at the front desk refuses to help me out when I asked a question about moving around Dallas. His suggestion was “google it” in order to continue the bullying. That is not the hostel way. Someone did tell me private rooms are better. But with the prices of their private rooms why wouldn’t you just chose a hotel with a pool for the same price and less misogynistic staff? Premises are good though. Whomever was cleaning they did good. And the bar I’ll review separately bc the bar staff was great.

This place really made Houston for me

Reviewed By TamaRyokan

And that's good, because something had to. I booked for three nights, ended up staying for four. The first person I met was Dan, out on the street, who asked "Are you the new guy?" Within 10 minutes, I was very happy to be the new guy. I had a kitchen that I should have made more use of, for a price I couldn't argue with. The building put me in mind of nice old wooden homes I grew up in, in Berkeley, CA. The reputation for friendliness is deserved. On a weekend morning, Leah drove me to the conference I was attending downtown, when I was running a little late. She was great fun to talk to. As an inn manager myself, I have more than a little in common with her. The neighborhood is quite as described in the other reviews here. For me, it was the perfect antidote to the conference venue (Hyatt Regency Downtown, in a bleak concrete-tower landscape which I've been told is also home to the terrestrial branch office of Darth Vader Enterprises.) The historic district offers comfortable diversity, but also, in its restaurants, bars and cafes, a lot of Stuff White People Like -- to which I'm fatally attracted, being a white quasi-hipster myself. At Beavers, I had quinoa-blackberry salad -- with a bowl of Texas chili. Both were great. At Catalina Cafe, I tried a Kenyan brew that had me asking the barista if their roaster ships internationally. Maybe it's no Austin, but if you need that in your life while you're in Houston, stay here.

The beach, restaurants, and a convenience store are within easy walking distance, but it's far enough back that it's quiet. Mario was super friendly and helpful at checkin.

The place is a masterpiece for sure but it wasnt maintain properly. It wasnt cleaned enough and the worst part is 2am and they are still jaming with their musical instrument. Like seriously I do get you'all talented but this is supposed to be a place to relax and sleep. Every 30 minutes someone opens the door, the light and everything and it disturbs me/us who are trying to sleep after a long day. Again the place is a masterpiece just please be sensitive about the hours and the noises.
