The best available Hostels hotel to stay near Byron Bay

May 16, 2023 Emerita Lamoureux

Byron Bay's beaches are dotted with lighthouses and surrounded by bottlenose dolphins, rays, whales and sea turtles. This former New South Wales whaling station turned tourist town is still strongly influenced by its recent bohemian past, when hippie lifestyles flourished. Bongos and didgeridoos sound in parks, sarongs and dreadlocks are common, and vegetarian restaurants abound. Give in to the casual vibe and stroll between beaches and bars for a low-key and happy day.

Having not been to Byron since 2006, I came for a night with a friend. We didn't want to be spending in to the 100s for a room we would only sleep in. We opted for the Cape Byron YHA. For $70, we got a twin room with a double and a bunk. The room was pretty bare, no TV - But it had a clothes hang/store area / mirror / enough plugs for the 2 of us. The bed was comfy and the covers were clean and warm (you have to strip the bed upon check out). There were 3 or 4 showers in the block on our floor, same for toilets - you needed the swipe card to get in - again clean, warm. The kitchen area was large - this grossed me out a little - but it's been a long time since I backpacked Oz and needed to cook for myself in such. The pans were old and pretty grubby. You had to get your plates etc from reception - but we had ours with us. The tea towels were rank - I wouldn't use. The worst however was a bloke in the kitchen coughing all over the place - not the hostels fault, but nasty nonetheless. Needless to say, we didn't go sit and eat by him - we ate on our balcony which had a table and 2 chairs. During COVID-times and no flights coming in to Oz, this hostel serviced a range of ages - I am 40 and there were people older than me there. I found the hostel more like a motel. Good location and good wifi.

What a beautiful hotel. The hotel has been nicely renovated, staff are friendly with great local knowledge. The roof top bar is a great spot for an afternoon drink in the sun. The hotel is in a prime location, walking distance to everything. The underground car parking is great too. We will be back !

I stayed with a friend and on second night was asked to leave as they don't allow drinking or socialising of any kind after 9pm anywhere in the hostel, no talking, no tv...nothing, not in common areas or your room whether it's private or shared...phone and ask! The staff are arrogant, ignorant and plain rude. The establishment thinks they're a resort and the staff arrogantly think they run a 5 star hotel. The place is full of long time homeless hippies wandering around like they own the place, pool is grungy, no fridge space, no freezer, no clean linen offered had to ask, no parking due to people living in campers, no cutlery, no plates, no cooking pots, no cups, expensive surfboard hire, stank from floods, beds are over due for replacement and expensive laundry costs. The site pictures are very misleading . All in all a real flop of a stay, this is a shared view by many other backpackers Ive had the pleasure of meeting elsewhere outside of Byron YHA. Shame on you Byron bay staff and YHA

I’m from Sydney and I was visiting Byron bay for the weekend. I had made my booking through booking.com and the request was accepted. When I showed up they wouldn’t allow me to stay as I was from Sydney had we have recently had a few cases of covid. I completely understand the situation and that the owner that the ability to make the decision to turn me away. Yet she not only demanded me to leave but yelled at her staff to escort me off the premises. The manager even went as far was swearing and insulting me for being there in the first place. Her behaviour from a professional perspective was horrible. I wouldn’t recommend staying at all. The gentleman behind the desk did there best to be kind to me and allowed me to wait until I found another place to stay. Unfortunately she threatened to call the police if I didn’t leave immediately.

Awesome location and rooftop

We stayed at the Rooftop Byron 6-11 April 2022, before Easter. The apartment is sheek, well designed and the fitout is top notch. We loved being right in town but also being on the rooftop gave us perspective of the mainstreet and be able to enjoy the afternoons and evenings on the day bed, using the bbq and finishing with some champagne in the SPA. We will definately stay there again. Excellent for families and friends.
