The best available Cottages to stay near Ohio

April 19, 2023 Margarita Chappel

If you are looking for an active place to stay with world-class attractions, Ohio’s major cities can satisfy any vacation desire. Each offers its own distinct flavor of fun, from professional sports – Bengals (Cincinnati), Cavaliers (Cleveland) and Indians (Cleveland again) – to museums, outdoor activities and more. One of the most famous is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. If football is your thing, don’t miss the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. For the science-minded, visit the meat eaters at the Carnivore Conservation Center in the Wilds near Cambridge, dedicated to the breeding and scientific study of endangered mid-sized carnivores. Kids will also love Planet Snoopy in Sandusky or the Columbus Zoo’s Zoombezi Bay Waterpark and Jack’s Landing rides.

The Bays Edge

It's a fishy place - proceed with caution

Reviewed By 483roid

Buyer beware and informed, some of the language of this add is a bit optimistic. "Setting the stage for luxury and comfort in Port Clinton, Ohio" depends on your definition of luxury and comfort. Our townhome had two main floor bedrooms and an upper loft, all with twin beds - so it could sleep 6 in beds and maybe 2 more on couches. There was no double bed for a couple to sleep in, and my 6' husband's feet hung over the edge of all beds. Bedding was not impressive in any fashion, nor were pillows. There were no lamps in the bedrooms, so overhead lights only. 2 bathrooms and a washer dryer were all good. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking equipment, but bring your own coffee because they don't provide ANYTHING. Lovely table and chairs, big comfy couches and a big TV, all good. Lots of taxidermy, which I find troubling but that might just be me. "The Bay's Edge consists of spacious townhomes along the shores of a well-stocked private fishing pond" - again, rather optimistic.... The townhomes sit on a small man-made square pool of water. It's not a pond. It's stocked with fish, and "catch and release" fishing is allowed, so the fish just keep getting hurt and tossed back over and over. Doesn't seem very sport-like to me. There is no way to get into, or on to the water. It's for looks only. There is a very small area of sand and chairs that is trying to look like a beach but is not. Water is chemically treated, and dead fish were at the water's edge. There is a horseshoe pit and a volleyball area, and the outdoor public bathroom was spotless. Major roads on all sides, so it doesn't look, or feel, like a resort, but more like a roadside attraction. The deck is lovely. Great table and chairs, great gas grill. Renting a sun umbrella will set you back 50.00 + a 30.00 deposit you'll get back (and the sign explaining this is worded in an angry and scolding fashion, as if you are in trouble for a past sin). At this time of the year, it was impossible to be on the deck without it - too hot, full sun. The deck has rails and is mostly child-proof but the square body of water is wide open and easy for little kids to fall as they look for fish. Check-in takes place at the fish-cleaning and bait store on the property, and this is where fisher-people on bigger lakes might enjoy the place, they could fish on the big waters, come home, have the fish cleaned and then grill them up themselves. The bait store also sells beer and Amish furniture. Fish cleaning must be paid for in cash, and there is no ATM on site. If guys were on a fishing weekend, they'd probably be ok as long as they didn't mind the short beds. Families should note the challenges in the bedrooms and the safety issues. Location is close to bigger water, and it might be a good place to stay for Cedar Point as well. I wish I could say the front desk person made it all worthwhile, but she was terse and gruff, as others have stated. To be fair, it can't be an easy job do deal with fisher-people while running a fish cleaning business. The reservation and payment was accurate and easy. Nobody was wearing a mask in the store. We don't fish, we were attending a birthday gathering at Twin Oast, which is a great nearby brewery. We were really looking forward to being away from the kids and getting a great night's sleep, but it wasn't possible in twin beds. Since we had to go out for coffee in the morning, we left long before check out, so we paid 271.00 for 19 hours. Hope this helps others.

Quaint and cozy.

Very pleased with the cabin. Small, secluded. It was exactly what we were looking for. Cabin was clean and fresh. Plenty of towels, washcloths, etc.. The office staff was very friendly and helpful. Had to cut the stay a day short due to weather. There was a tornado that came through the area and left us without electricity all night Wednesday and most of the day Thursday. We left a day early as our food was thawing out, no hot water and no water pressure to flush the toilet. But we will come back. Can't control Mother Nature. Still a great place to stay!!!

Quiet Retreat

The location of our cabin was easy to find, tucked away perfectly amongst the trees. The cabin was very clean, provided everything we needed and was very cozy. We even enjoyed a small bottle of wine with dinner that the hosts left us, extremely thoughtful and appreciated. My husband and I highly recommend this cabin to every couple. We definitely plan on returning.

False Advertisement

The cabin is being advertised under false clames. There site and there emails say free wifi, but once you get on site there is a note saying no music, video or games are to be used on the wifi, extra chargers may apply. How can you advertise free wifi and then threaten to charge your gusts for using it! It's absolutely infuriating that they use lies to sell there cabin. I would avoid going to any cabins ran by this group as who knows what other info they don't mention on there site or confirmation emails.

Best views of Lake Erie! Shhh, don't tell anyone!!

I stayed at the Rose Cottage last year and returned to stay at the Beach House this year. What a great cottage! Very clean!! Totally updated and fully furnished! Even coffee pods!! Only needed to bring food. Loved the high ceiling in the living room and the skylight in the kitchen. Private gazebo where you can drink coffee and/or read a book. If you are looking to unplug and get away from TV, this is your place. (Wifi could be upgraded as it is slow) Amy quickly answers any questions you have. Close enough to Cleveland so you can go see things there. We went to an Indians game and also to Sandusky. Great restaurants in Vermilion and Huron only 5-6 miles away. Highly recommend!!

Abigail's Lakeside Cottages

Perfect for us!

Reviewed By s209travel

My friend and I stayed in Cottage #7, which faces the main drag. This means that the front bedroom is noisy, so bring earplugs! This is a perfect location, right on the strip on one end, and the lake on the other. We enjoyed relaxing in the gazebo and eating in the screened-in porch. The cottage itself was a good size for the two of us, though the shower was very small and the bathroom mirror wonky. It would have been nice to have a full-length mirror and a box of Kleenex as well.

Mel & Mary's Cottages

Peaceful getaway

Reviewed By DisneyDreamer2013

I enjoy going to Holmes County Ohio and staying at different B&B. I found Mel & Mary's a wonderful experience. One can enjoy the peaceful surroundings overlooking rolling hills and farmland or sitting by the lake located on the property. These are only a couple of pleasures of Mel & Mary's. Yes, Mel & Mary's can be enjoyed by adults as well as children. Many people come back every year because they made friends with the owners. The property is well kept as are spotless cabins and lodge. Get away from the noise and smell of the city and stay at Mel & Mary's where you can enjoy the peace & quiet and fresh country air. You will come back again!
