The best available Cottages to stay near Louisiana

April 18, 2023 Renato Branum

Louisiana tourism is centered on New Orleans and the North Shore region in the southeastern corner of the state near the Florida border. West of New Orleans is the Great River Road, with the I-10 running to the Mississippi River port capital city of Baton Rogue. West of New Orleans along the Gulf of Mexico, the I-10 cuts through Lafayette and Lake Charles on its way past Abbeville to Texas. Central Louisiana is Lake Country, and home to cities like Alexandria and Natchitoches. In northern Louisiana, the I-20 runs west from Monroe to Bossier City, Shreveport, and East Texas. Unless Louisiana is very familiar and frequent territory, New Orleans will be the top choice for a Louisiana vacation. Though Mardi Gras, music, and the winning ways of the New Orleans Saints football team get the spotlight, there is much more to explore in New Orleans. Within New Orleans choose among Bourbon Street, Royal Street, the Upper and Lower French Quarters, the Warehouse and Central Business District, the Garden District and Uptown, and Mid-City. With street car lines linking the French Quarter to the Garden District, Convention Center, and everywhere else, it is easy for the whole family to get around. If long walks are your exercise, explore the scenic city on foot. An easy two-hour drive from New Orleans brings you to Baton Rogue, Natchitoches and Lake Country. Explore old Beauregard Town in downtown Baton Rogue, the historic homes of the Baton Rogue Garden District, and tour one or several working plantations. Walk the 33-block Historic Landmark District and tour the historic homes and churches of Natchitoches. Relive Spanish Empire history in Louisiana at Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site. Heading west from New Orleans is Cajun Country and Lafayette with its mix of French, French Canadian (Acadian), Spanish, and Caribbean cultures. Besides Cajun and Creole cookery, explore the Civil War heritage at the Lafayette Museum. Stop by Abbeville to view the courthouse designed by Hayes Town, St. Mary Magdalen Church, and have a seafood meal. With 75 annual festivals Lake Charles is Louisiana's Festival City, and home to the Creole Nature Trail Scenic Byway. Shreveport and Bossier City in northwest Louisiana are casino and entertainment centers. Shreveport is renowned for hosting the Louisiana State Fair in the fall. Plus floral centers, art galleries, and museums. Monroe in the northeast also has notable gardens.

Cute place to stay but the French Quarter just has lost all of its charm .. Very sad you don't feel safe once outside the gates of Audubon Cottages.. the humanity populating the streets is very dicey.. Not the same charming place as it was Pre Katrina..

Great Secret Hideaway

My wife and I stayed here while visiting place along the Andouille Trail. Do not let the outside deceive you, our cottage was a gem to stay in. First, Veronica who we schedule our reservation with was ever so helpful and made sure everything was just right for our late night arrival. BTW, make sure you get excellent directions because the cottages are truly hidden. Our cottage was a joy to stay in and made for a great place to call home after exploring all over the local countryside and up and down the Mississippi river. The include breakfast at the Village Cafe was delicious and the shrimp etouffee omelette was wonderful. Ask for sausage gravy on you biscuit and you might be licking the plate clean, that good. Also, make sure to get a basket of the beignet fingers, they are a favorable treat. We will be back again in the future.

Rooms are spotless and kitchens have all the necessities. They are very dog friendly, too. Great place to stay and we will go back.

Lovely, Quiet, Secluded.

Reviewed By fWaljojo

Needed to get away for a few days and THIS was exactly what I was looking for. It's not the Hilton, it's more like visiting your grandma's house (assuming grandma is scrupulously clean and tidy). "Quaint" seems so trite and cliche. But it really describes David's in the best use of the term. My stay was actually a few years back. But judging by the other two reviews, it hasn't changed much.

We had such an amazing and relaxing time at HFC. They basically supplied everything we needed except for food and clothes. The rooms were immaculate and beds were so comfortable! We spent most of our time hanging out under the oak tree when we weren’t fishing or crabbing. It was so relaxing! The boat slip, fuel on the dock for the boat, ice, and live bait all made our trip so nice! They have a great staff too! So helpful and nice! We will be back!

Do not stay at Evangeline Art House, it’s a crack house sans the crack. Pictures make it seem OK it’s a total CON job.

Reviewed By A721achmedm

Stayed there for under a week, it was prepaid. So whether I stayed or left, they would keep my money. Stay away. I can say that the flying roaches and rats didn’t pay a fee but they were constant companions and fear of being stabbed/robbed/murdered just 3 blocks away was a high likelihood. I saw the other reviews and only saw a 1 star review and chose to give the place the benefit of a doubt. Never again, the place seemed peaceful, but it’s like time, roads, law enforcement and this century forgot this area. Gravel roads in a city is a shameful reminder that the third world exists in these great United States. The place itself takes great pictures, But once you arrive you realize that it’s a con, the house needs years of professional work to make it a 2-3 star, anything higher than 2 stars is a gross misrepresentation and they should be ashamed of themselves charging almost $100 per night. It’s barely worth $40. Maybe it beats sleeping outside? Maybe that’s the bar they’ve set. I was going to keep quiet and let the owner gather funds to fix it, but I guess being in a third world city, codes, ethics, cleanliness, and just proper craftsmanship are a luxury for this city. The fact that the heater and ac works it’s a great stride towards what we take for granted, even in our most inexpensive areas we have better places to house PEOPLE. Shameful greedy people calling this place deemed fit for human habitation. Think of a squatter’s or meth/crack house, that’s what this place brings to mind. I know that this review may seem heartless and downright inaccurate, I wish that no other people would have to experience the state of this dilapidated home. It looks like it was a great home about 100-150 years ago. But I can’t call myself a human and recommend this place, maybe to people I don’t like and wish they would contract some incurable and debilitating illness. But alas, I can’t even recommend it to them. Whomever is in charge of this place should at least clean up the trash strewn all over this house. Clear the clutter and use the trash can. Think of a hoarder that died and the rooms are the only area that is somewhat habitable. This place will not change until us dumb tourists quit staying there. It’s not cheap, but you take your health into your own hands. I grew up in New Orleans and Metairie, I never knew places like this existed. Now when I travel to remote foreign lands, I can never use the word “third world” or “unfit for human habitation” ever again. This place showed me that this actually exists in this country, ghetto bad, but if you want to see that, just drive a couple of blocks north where life is devoid of hope and it’s as cheap as a pair of flip flops. if I had known, I would have stayed in a cheap motel chain rather than this dilapidated house. But for $100 I would have had not experienced flying roaches, rats, and hazardous materials. Rat feces is no joke. You can die from it, or just suffer debilitating illness. It could be a great house, once restored, but you can’t charge money to suffer guests to spend even a single night. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

Northeast guest sweep off his feet

Reviewed By andreh706

I recently stayed at this fabulous property for one week. Dominque is a superb host and opened his lovely home to me and my daughter. The home is traditional New Orleans with the real torch outside lantern. The artwork is spectacular giving this home an especially warm feeling to guests. I enjoyed the use of the lounge area in addition to our room. All in all and excellent value for the money and a stone's throw away from popular attractions and good options for dining literally blocks away. I high recommend Creole Cottage Uptown as alternative to a traditional hotel room. I promise you, you won't be disappointed!
