April 19, 2023 Misti Hsu

If you’ve never thought much about North Dakota, maybe it’s time you started. Boasting miles and miles of hiking trails, including the Lewis and Clark trail, in addition to multiple museums, golf courses, casinos and amusement parks, North Dakota is bursting with things to do. Situated smack between the Great Lakes and the Pacific Ocean, North Dakota was once called “America’s Most Affordable Vacation Site” by the American Automobile Association. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are two of North Dakota’s most famous residents. Tracing the courses of the Missouri and Columbia and rivers, the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail stretches through 11 states. Thanks to their explorations, visitors to North Dakota with an interest in history can do some exploring of their own. Bismarck is not only the capital of the state, it’s also home to several Lewis and Clark historical sites including Fort Yates, where the pair stopped to trade with the Mandan Indians. For family fun in Bismarck, don’t miss the Dakota Zoo and Raging Rivers Waterpark. With more golf courses per capita than any other state (11 in Bismarck and Fargo alone), golf lovers are sure to find a course to their liking. Agri-tourism is also a popular activity in North Dakota, which ranks first in the production of spring wheat, durum wheat, sunflowers, barley, honey and other crops.

Family Stay

We stayed here for one night on the way through the area. The location of the hotel is not very desirable, as there are not many places to eat in the area, especially on a Sunday night. The room was fine, clean and spacious. The water park was fun, great for the kids of 4, 8 and 10. However two of the kids somehow got little scrapes on their toes from the pool somewhere. Glad we stopped in but unlikely to do so again.

Sparkly clean, breakfast not so hot

Reviewed By LakewoodJoan

We were greeted with a smile, our room was very nice, and we had a comfortable sleep. Charley was adorable. The breakfast, though, was just individually-sealed convenience-store pastries, a couple choices of cold cereal, yogurt and coffee. Eggs or biscuits & gravy, fruit, even a waffle-maker, would have set us off on the road in fine form, but the over-processed sugar bomb didn't do the trick.

Worst place I have ever stayed. Came to Devils Lake for a funeral service. Inconsiderate staff. Complained about noise. Nothing was done. Toilet wouldn’t flush. Nothing was done. Only stayed one night even though I paid for two. They refused to refund after checking out because it was past 3pm. I looked at the clock it was 3:15. Checked in to a different hotel and they offered us a bereavement discount.

This motel is for sure an oil field motel. It is a bit rough. The internet works good, parking is adequate & it's right next to a good old fashioned mom & pop cafe. The floors are stained is the big issue. The price does reflect the condition tho.

Great Customer Service

Reviewed By reginaron

We arrived for our reservation on Sunday January 2nd around 4 pm. I was disappointed to learn that the steakhouse and tavern are not open on Sundays, but that is my fault for not doing my homework. The owner Gary checked us in and when I mentioned my disappointment at not being able to see the tavern he took us in for a look, sold me some beer for $1.25 a bottle, and offered to come back in a couple of hours to cook a pizza for us. This was much appreciated as EVERYTHING in Regent is closed on Sunday, even the gas stations. A couple of hours later, the bartender, on his day off, brought us two plates of baked manicotti and roast turkey and gravy, along with two small loaves of banana bread. It was delicious. (We were the only guests in the hotel that night) Gary has spent an incredible amount of time over the past 30 years creating the sculptures on the enchanted highway, and they are impressive. And he tells me he's not done yet. I think he did a great job of renovating the school into a castle. I'm sure kids must just love it. We always look for unique places to stay when we travel and the castle was well worth the 20 or 25 minute detour off I85. Our hope is that more people take the time to check out this property. Thanks Gary, and staff.

Unlike Any Other Bed & Breakfast

What staying with Kay is not - it isn't check-in, sleep, have breakfast, go on your way. What staying with Kay is - it is a total experience. You are welcomed into the world of an interesting and warm individual. The bed (where you sleep) and the breakfast (what you eat), become secondary to spending time with Kay. Viewing her mother's art, admiring her collections, and enjoying time with Kay. My wife, son (age 14 at that time) and I, first stayed with Kay in July 2013. Beginning of November, when I called for a reservation, Kay couldn't remember my name, or my wife's, but she remembered our son, who is now in his first year of law school. My wife and I had no reason to stop in Bismarck, except for the desire to spend a night with Kay. Something every traveler should do.

Friendly, comfortable and quiet

Reviewed By HoosierTraveler60

Unexpected find in the middle of nowhere. Staff very friendly. Room was large, modern, clean, comfortable and quiet. Room on a par with medium priced chains like Hampton and Holiday Inn. Breakfast choices pretty sparse but enough variety (and good donuts). It faces a rural highway, but there was no traffic at night. If I stayed again, I would ask for a room on the back side away from the road. The hotel has a lounge serving alcohol.
