Nicknamed "Little Kyoto," Kanazawa's rich history and culture ranges from geisha districts to a 16th-century castle. Locals here enjoy the good life away from big-city buzz, whether they’re picking up fresh seafood at Omicho Market or strolling Kenroku-en Garden’s manicured paths.

The perfect ryokan in Kanazawa

Reviewed By 4548ring

When looking to stay in Kanazawa, one would be hard pressed to find a more perfect place than Sumiyoshiya. The location is great, as it is very close to both the Omi-Cho Market, and the Kanazawa Castle Park. We spent two nights at this ryokan and could not have been happier! Mie Sumi was the consumate hostess! When asked for extra water in the room, recommendations for a shushi restaurant, arranging for taxis, all was taken care of in a matter of minutes. She even provided us with the name and location of the where to find the wonderful tea sweets served in our room. The room (#2) was spacious and immaculate. The dinner (served in our room) was outstanding! Crab, grilled fish, sushimi, shrimp, and clear soup with clam were all delicious. We could not have asked for a more wonderful meal! While Kanazawa was a bit quiet (mid-June, Tues-Thurs) we found plenty to do around town, and will make a return visit in November. When we do, we plan to stay at Sumiyoshiya once again.

I stayed at the Emblem for over a week in total (in the dormitories) and it was such a great place, 100% clean, a huge nice kitchen with a lot of good equipment, very very good value for the price and most importantly: the vibe! All the Staff Members are super welcoming, offer help whenever you might need some and overall great people. There are weekly events to get to know local people as well as other guests, which are very enjoyable!

Quiet, traditional inn next to the nightlife district

Reviewed By Tyler-KameseiRyokan

We stayed here for our family's spring vacation trip to Kanazawa. Murataya is a delightful traditional ryokan located in a quiet corner near the nightlife district. The inn is old-style with cozy wood construction with rooms surrounding a relaxing central garden. In fact, the room they gave us opens out to the garden -- a pleasant surprise. Some people may prefer to have a toilet and bath / shower in their guest room instead of shared facilities like at Murataya, but for the price and the convenient location, we were extremely pleased. Plus there were nice touches like fresh ikebana flowers displayed throughout the inn. And best of all, when we headed out to find a restaurant for dinner, the owner ran to catch up with us and personally escorted us to places popular with the locals -- Such great service! We will definitely be back!

Incredible food, but falls short in some other areas

Reviewed By KI-NRT

Yuzuya Ryokan Kanazawa Ryokusone is as "traditional" as they get, ryokan wise. There is no attempt to look and feel modern in any way, and therein lies the charm of this ryokan. What it lacks, however is a proper property grounds with a nice garden, or any kind of grounds whatsoever. There is also no common area to relax and unwind. You're either hanging out in your room, or you're hitting the town. It's pretty much a traditional property with great food. If that's what you're looking for, look no further. We had 3 people in our party, so we booked two rooms - one of them being the top one at Ryokusone - the Special Room Yamaboushi. While it was pretty nice, there wasn't anything amazing about it. It was a 2-story room (the bedroom is upstairs) with steep stairs, and was moderately room but doesn't scream "spacious luxury." Food was the highlight. They don't serve meals in the rooms (unfortunately - this is our preference) but the food they had on offer was terrific. That said, given its price one would expect a great Japanese meal, and it did not disappoint. A few other nits to pick. The bath is not a real onsen bath, and they do not offer laundry services. Ryokusone is not a "destination" ryokan; I would not recommend anyone go out of their way just to stay here. However, if you're already planning to be in the area, and want a decent place to stay with great food (and not much more), and have the financial means to manage it, Ryokusone is a decent choice.

Overpriced and out of date

Reviewed By Wanderer6

I had great hopes for this place. Sadly they were dashed. The inn is long overdue for an update, especially the bathrooms - limited to a small toilet and sink - that were last fitted out in the late 1970s. Showering means a trip to the onsen. Admittedly, that’s the main attraction of the inn, but, it is preferred to be able to get ready in the morning using your own facilities. Furthermore, the futons have seen better days and are wafer thin, just like the towels! Consequently, it’s not particularly relaxing or indulgent experience. All this wouldn’t be so bad if the price of staying here was reflective of the conditions. For $500 (plus drinks at dinner), you expect a lot more frills. Not all is negative, the staff are welcoming and the grounds have charm.
