cancelled my reservation without my knowledge
Reviewed By G4263HTmabThe owner of this establishment, Vreni, cancelled my 4 August, 2020 three room reservation 6 days before our stay, without my knowledge. The reservation was made in January 2020. It was for a family trip to celebrate two 50 year, and one 80 year birthday. When I made the reservation, I did receive the emails for each of the rooms, including reservation confirmation numbers. So I knew the reservation was valid. I still have those emails. Fortunately, I called the night before the stay, to request a room upgrade on one of the reservations. That is when I found out about the cancellation. At that point, the three rooms were already re-booked. Vreni told me that she had send an email 6 days before our stay, supposedly asking to confirm the reservation. I did not receive the email. I asked them to re-send that email, for me to see why I had not received it, and to validate what I was told by Vreni. As of today, I still don’t have that email. They also have my cell phone number, but have failed to ever call me, to notify me of the cancellation, nor have they followed up with me on anything since. They did end up coordinating with a different hotel in Gais, at a cheaper rate. That hotel is substandard, so I declined. Vreni stated that there was nothing else they could do. I am not sure why Vreni was not able to make contact with me before she cancelled my reservation, and how she would cancel my reservation without hearing from me personally. I am still waiting on any sort of follow up. Luckily, I was able to book three rooms at a different hotel, last minute, the night before the stay. As far as the email issue, I have been in email contact with an Appenzell Restaurant and a local Taxi service, since January, and have not missed a single email from the two businesses. Those plans came through. I have also been sending emails back and forth with the new Hotel (Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten) that I had to book rooms with last minute. No issues!! Well, because of the issue described above, I ended up finding a Gem, the Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten: I highly recommend this Hotel, and I am now glad that the above described incident happened, otherwise I would have missed out on the Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten. The Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten accommodated everything I needed, again, last minute. It was around 22:30/10:30PM at night when I called there, the night before my stay. They let me check in early the day of the stay, all rooms were on the same floor, the rooms had the traditional Appenzeller wooden look, everything was very clean, and newly remodeled. All staff was very friendly. They even welcomed us with an arrival reception, drinks and a local snack. At check out, Hotel management came down to thank us personally for the stay. On future visits to the Appenzell region, it will be at the Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten. Marc Brotschi

Not as advertised - lacks host mentality
Reviewed By martinmm19This hotel is in the middle of a substantial camping ground. The view to the valley is marred by tents pitched just meters from the hotel grounds. The pool, jacuzz, chairs are not included in the price, you have to pay for the "spa" area separately (12 CHF / day): they should mention that prominently. The jacuzzi was not fully uncovered and partially dirty from previous guests (dark rim where they had their back against). You don't feel welcome here - whatever issue it always felt I had to happy to be here after all, no host mentality which should strive to make your stay unforgettable. Examples: 1. They did not mention / explain the situation around the spa, had to run into closed doors myself 2. They did not tell me that I could have ordered eggs for breakfast, I just heard it by chance from a fellow guest 3. One camping guest came in complaining about the inconvenient coin operated washing machine. He was publicly dressed down and told he should go somewhere else if he did not like it here. I know that's what we probably all would think but that's not how you treat guests! The room was tiny, so was the TV set (below 20 inches), the shower was so tight I constantly banged my head and arms. The internet on the other hand is very good (40mb/s download).

25 spacious rooms all with en-suite bathrooms/shower. The lodge is located right next to the train station, 20 (free) parking spaces available too. W-LAN for all – 24/7 and with unlimited data. The lodge is the perfect place to discover the beautiful nature of Appenzell. If you are up for a hike, mountain bike tour or just some relaxing days in the mountains, this is your place.

Reviewed By SallychristineThe room was dark and dingy and more like a dormitory than hotel room. It was very small. The bathroom had a large window without any privacy at all. We stayed with our two grandsons and so this was not ideal. Perhaps this could have been mentioned when we booked as we did so directly with the hotel. Our request in the morning for some sort of curtain, was largely ignored. The staff were neither friendly nor efficient. It is in a very nice area though and we would certainly return but stay somewhere else for sure.

A gem in a quaint setting

From the location in quaint Schwellbrunn (voted as most beautiful village of Switzerland), the idea of turning a rustic restaurant into a B&B, the lovely renovation and personal touch of interior and facilities, to the local, yet global and very friendly host couple, there is much to like. Enjoy the silence and stunning views from your room or the upper terrace. Feast your eyes on the antiques and details of the lovely renovated building. Satisfy your appetite with the plentiful morning buffet, your need for community in the lounge which has been placed in the former restaurant space. Get tips for sights and trips from the local owner and just have a pleasant time in this relaxing environment.

Reviewed By jej9001I was moved to this guesthouse the last night of my stay in Gais as the place I was staying was full. I arrived after dinner and the staff was nice but this place is a mess. There are three houses connected and no clear directions on where you are going. I dragged my suitcase up three flights of stairs until I found my room. There is no elevator and no help. I wondered through a group of older men with beards and tattoos ( nothing against tattoos but threes guys were scary looking). It seemed more like a hostel than a hotel. My room was spartan and not very clean. I slept on top of a towel as I felt the sheets were not as clean as I would like. The bathroom is stocked with that motel type soap that you don’t want to wash yourself with. The towels were thin and worn. This is a great place for young people who don’t mind roughing it. Unfortunately the price was more than the lovely guest house down the hill I had to leave. Not recommended for the discerning traveler.

Reviewed By fuzziGinevraQuesto albergo di grande tradizoine è situato nel bel mezzo di un paesaggio da cartolina postale, tra le dolci colline e i prati verdi dell'Appenzello, con placide mucche al pascolo e, sullo sfondo, la catena alpina da una parte, il lago di Costanza (Bodensee) dall'altro. Una cosa bucolica, riposante solo da vedere! Un angolo di paradiso a poco più di un'ora di macchina dal centro di Zurigo! L'alberghetto, con poche camere, meriterebbe una rinfrescatina, ma anche così offre una tranquillità assoluta e un buon livello di comfort. Ricca prima colazione (in caso di bel tempo, da gustare sulla terrazza panoramica) a base di marmellate casalinghe, panini, brioche e croissants, tutti sfornati dallo storico forno ultracentenario (l'albergo essendo pure una Bäckerai, cioè una panetteria artigianale). Servizio attento ed efficiente, grazie anche alla simpaticissima figlia dei proprietari, poliglotta, che vi metterà di buon umore solo a vederla. Prezzi normali. Assolutamente raccomandabile.

The lady in charge is indeed quite welcoming, multilingual, and eager to help. The hotel is unpretentious and located in a lovely, old country building, next to a couple of farms at the edge of town. It almost feels like an old, warm pension, or a large family house. Rooms are very clean and spacious, although frumpy. Yes, decoration is that of your old aunt, but bedding is good and we got a very good night sleep. (I don't know if they have an unallergic alternative to the usual feather pillows and comforters). The bathroom was also old fashioned but spacious and functional. Outside, there are also lounge chairs where you can relax next to the owners vegetable garden. All in all, we really appreciated this hotel, unpretentious, charming in a peaceful, old fashioned way, and above all a great value in a very expensive country. Thank you! We shall be back
