Lone Mountain Ranch

Lone Mountain Ranch (LMR), situated on 148 acres in beautiful Big Sky, Montana, was first homesteaded in 1915 and has long been recognized as one of the premier guest ranch resorts in the country. The property consists of 30 rooms located within 24 unique cabins as well as a restaurant and saloon, pavilion, retail shop, equestrian facilities, and meeting spaces. Listed on the National Registry of the Historic Places, a member of the Dude Rancher's Association, an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Lodge, a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World, and once voted the #1 Nordic ski area in North America, LMR offers authentic accommodations, genuine Montana cuisine, exceptional service, and a stunning array of outdoor activities. Combine these attributes with close proximity to Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky Resort, as well as Bozeman Airport, and we believe the LMR guest experience is unlike any other in the American West.

Our time at Lone Mountain Ranch was fabulous! We fed carrots to the horses as soon as we arrived, which was so great! The vibe by the stables was so lovely; fire pits going, people wandering around with drinks, petting horses… We decided we needed some pre-dinner drinks ourselves, so we stopped by the bar, where we were greeted by Brien! He was super friendly and made us feel welcome while he made our delicious cocktails. After finishing our cocktails, we headed up to dinner. Chris greeted us warmly and took us to our table, where we met Joel, who is maybe the friendliest waiter I’ve ever had! I could instantly tell he was passionate about his job and the food he was serving! He gave us great recommendations on food and wine! My group is still talking about the wonderful time we had at Lone Mountain Ranch and all the great people we met while there!

Great Early Season Fishing

Reviewed By Kenneth A

Despite the sketchy weather this early in the season [Mothers Day], I had three good days fishing with guides out of the Healing Waters Lodge. One day wade fishing was one of the best ever. And of course, Mike and Laura run a very fine establishment near Twin Bridges. Mike orchestrates the fishing and Laura is amazing at the other details. I highly recommend this lodge.

Magical Visit to Mountain Sky Guest Ranch!

Every day was the best day ever! We traveled as a group (2 couples) during spring Wild West Adventures/adult only package. We started the day with 7am yoga at the most beautiful yoga studio overlooking the trees/mountains/ranch. The floors are gently heated and the ambiance is unequaled. The equipment and props are clean and plentiful. Sophia is topnotch and prepares you for the day of riding, hiking, or golf. She is precious, gives excellent cues and guidance, and reads the room like a pro. Our spouses are new/novice yogis and they loved morning yoga too. Morning rides with the experienced wranglers exceeded all expectations. Our ride to the horse pastures with Caleb was one of the most magical mornings with indescribable vistas. Don't miss the ride from the upper to lower ranch! Cowboy Jack and Wrangler Kassidy-highly recommend. And A+/5 stars to Ben who gave us great technical pointers on our last ride of the week. Shout out to Nutmeg and Melman - our horses for the week! Thanks Julie, head wrangler for providing an excellent experience and remembering our names! In the afternoons, we soaked up the vistas from the golf course. We hesitate to share because we don't want to let this secret out! Matt gave us great pointers at the driving range and we hope he will be back in 2023! We appreciate the ease of playing golf at Mountain Sky as the clubs and cart are provided and we could play at a leisurely pace since we had the back 9 to ourselves. Don't miss the view from the 15th tee box! 4:30pm restorative yoga with Silas was a welcomed reprieve and I've never felt so relaxed! The wellness/spa facility is beautiful and we love the relaxation room. Highly recommend Sophia and Abbi for massage. Don't miss the outdoor hot tub that overlooks the mountains! Mountain Sky makes this vacation hassle-free with access to laundry, bountiful food, cozy robes, walkable upper ranch, shuttles to lower ranch, variety of activities, and cash free/wallet free experience. The shuttle to and from Bozeman added to the ease of travel. The GF pastries and coffee cake were delicious! We hope next year the vegetarian/GF options are more creative for supper. Remember to pack layers, a vest, sunglasses, sunscreen, cowboy hat and boots, slippers for mornings/evenings in the cabin, swim suit, and hiking shoes. Leave your laptop at home! We enjoyed the technology disconnect. Prepare for days full of activity, relaxation, beauty, mountain air and vistas, and friendly staff! We would love to extend our visit by a day with check in on Memorial Day. We need one more day on the ranch...and especially for the guests who travel from the east coast, an additional day is welcomed! Thank you Erin, Julie, Katie, Dylan, and all the staff for an A+ experience! We look forward to returning in 2023!

A Step Back in Time

My husband and I were at the Ranch from 8/15-22/21, so I am a bit late in my review. My excuse is I started a new job the day after returning. This was our third attempt at coming, delayed twice, between unplanned knee surgery for my husband and COVID in 2020. We went for the riding and fly fishing and we were not disappointed. I am a horse owner and my husband is a good equestrian. The Kelsey horses were responsive and steady. I rode Lullabye for the week. He was a sweetie. The trail themselves are endless. I have never ridden in such wide open spaces. The only disappointment was the wildfire haze limited the distance visibility for most of the week, but that could not be helped. We also were not able to due the overnight trip due to rainy conditions. Again, when you are dealing with nature, you have to roll with that comes your way. Nature is all about resilience. The wranglers were great, skilled and engaged. Steve loved the fishing and the guide, Rob, but I cannot give details. Food is served family style. The wait staff assigns the seating so you get to know everyone over the course of the week. We were with a great bunch of guest. We enjoyed each other. Other highlights of the week. A softball game with the staff that was a riot, an outdoor steak dinner, and a square dance on the last night. The square dance was a hoot. The caller brings actual records. The staff got dressed up and because we were there during a family week, the kids were deep in the mix. It was a sweet, fun night with lots of belly laughs. The perfect capstone. The Kelseys and all of the staff were lovely and accommodating. The cabins are cozy, but basic, so if you are looking cell phone reception, TV in your room or room service, this is not the place for you. If you want great riding and fly fishing and well as revisiting simple pleasures, you have found your place. We would love to go back at sometime.

If you like gorgeous scenery, friendly people and a break from the hectic, crazy world, this is the place to go. If you like fancy resorts with TV's, WIFI and spa treatments, this would not be for you. I thought I would miss a TV, but to my amazement, did NOT! It was nice getting away from the chaotic world that most of us live in and fall into a more simpler lifestyle of riding horses, archery, trap shooting and talking to the new friends you make, as well as the wonderful ranch hands. The food was good, accommodations well thought out and the views breathtaking, even from right outside of our cabin. Kudos to Kim and Ernie for keeping the ranch small and intimate!!! My friend and I will be back!!

Most Amazing Vacation Ever

This was truly an amazing place that we all fell in love with! From the moment we drove up the driveway to Flathead Lake Lodge it was breathtaking! The staff when we checked in were so helpful. They took us to our lodge room that took my breathe away....it was so clean and beautiful. The lodge is right on Flathead Lake and a big pool right in front of the Lake where you can swim. The Food was amazing for breakfast, lunch and dinner. One morning we went by horseback up to the mountain where they cooked the best pancakes, eggs and bacon!! Dining at dinner is family style in the large dining area in the main lodge. We made so many friends while we were there it was amazing. One of the nights there was a steak fry where they take everyone in to the mountains with 3 open top fire engines .....so much fun for the adults and the kids. Live music and wine and Mr. Averill was there talking to everyone like family! There is so much to do here from horseback riding, archery, laser tag, fishing, going to the Elk Preserve to see Elk, watersports, sailing and motorboat ride around the lake where you see so much wildlife and more, swimming in Lake or pool, rodeo, live music with dancing in the pasture and so much more......the biggest thing is deciding what you want to do that day, you will never be bored. One night they had a bonfire for the adults with amazing fun music and one for the kids with s'mores. Another night we all sat on the porch in front of the Lake and listened to live music (amazing). I could go on and on about this lodge ......it was one of the best experiences I've had in my travels and I travel alot. To the Averill Family and their staff, thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this trip one we will never forget and making our family feel at home on your ranch. I know we will never forget it (my 13 year old son met so many friends that he is keeping in touch with and I make many friends I will keep in touch with for the years to come) We can not wait to come back. If you are looking for a one of a kind vacation for your family that is perfect, visit Flathead Lake Lodge.....it will be a trip your family will talk about for years to come. Thank you so much for an amazing vacation! The Wallace Family (Sally, Don and Luke, Travel Inc Beverly, MA)

We recently went on a sleigh ride dinner at elk horn. Due to a traffic accident blocking 191 after our sleigh ride dinner, we were not able to return to our home near Rainbow Ranch. Our group consisted of 15 people, five of them under the age of 5!? With temperatures well below zero, and no place to go, Michael, Addison, and Paul took us in to the dining cabin again and provided us with everything we needed to be comfortable and care for the little kids. From sleeping bags to food/drink to cushions on the floor for babies to sleep, there was no end to their kindness and caring. They truly “went above and beyond”! This all after they had to wait for us to BEGIN the sleigh ride, when one of our family member and family slid off the road in his vehicle en route to the Elkhorn!!?? They served us with a smile and a delicious dinner!! This level of character and consideration is difficult to find in these times. The Elkhorn is fortunate to have these fine people as employees! This place is incredible and absolutely worth checking out!

I visited Triple Creek Ranch for the Stave puzzling weekend, but also took the opportunity to experience many of the on-ranch activities (logging camp, sapphire panning, hiking, horseback riding, and scenic drive). Nothing disappointed! The service and amenities at TCR were all absolutely top notch. The food is superb. The staff is all friendly, welcoming, and completely accommodating. Because of recent snows, golf carts were not yet available, but staff is quick to drive you anywhere on property you need to go. Speaking of driving, I chose to do the airport transfer service rather than renting a car and am glad I did! Dusty picked me up and drove me to the ranch, while giving great information about the area and the ranch. Dave drove me back and was a great conversationalist. It's really nice to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views rather than having to concentrate on driving. I stayed in Castle Rock and absolutely loved the room (though I spent very little time there because I was too busy doing everything else!) I enjoyed my stay so much I've already booked a return visit!
