The hotel is very well located to visit the many touristic places around. It has very nice owners, personnel ready to help whenever you need. The rooms are clean, modern and well equipped. Some of them have a great terrace also with pool view. The pool area is awesome with a wonderful view on the surrounding hills and castle, equipped with sunbeds.

The Marie Celeste Hotel

Reviewed By kenstarsix

We booked the Le Relais des 5 Chateaux via booking.com back in May for a 3 night stay in the Dordogne in early September 2012. We booked for Sunday, Monday & Tuesday and arrived late afternoon on the Sunday. Slight language barrier at checking in as the proprietor did not speak English and our French was pigeon to say the least but we managed to arrange a table for dinner that night and breakfast at 9.00am the next morning. The meal was superb and the puddings out of this world, the wine wasn’t bad either, the menu a bit pricey but worth every penny! The waitress was a young English student about to start at college the next day in France where she lived locally. The next morning up for continental breakfast served by the hostess our proprietor and off exploring the Dordogne. The main reasons for booking this hotel were, its location, superb, as the name implies we looked out over 5 of the best Chateaux in the Dordogne, the hotel restaurant as it had been well recommended and the hotel swimming pool as there is nothing nicer than after a days sight seeing to return to your hotel and have a dip in the pool just as the heat of the days mellows a little. We returned that afternoon around 3 pm to find the place deserted, we could access the hotels reception area as we had the door key code and get to our rooms but the reception area was abandoned and the phone constantly ringing and the office door locked. Also locked was the door into the dining and public room area, so we couldn’t get a drink and there were no facilities to make a cup of tea etc. in your room, and the swimming pool area was also locked. Initially we believed that as it was a small family run hotel they may have nipped out during a quite afternoon but still by 7.30 that night we were still the only people in the hotel. We went out for dinner and returned to find the hotel in total darkness, we have a look around outside before entering but see no life anywhere. All we could do was go to bed hoping that nothing happen during the night as there was nobody there to help us if there was a problem. We got up the next morning around 7.30 to find the hotel still abandoned, nothing had changed overnight, so we got up with no drinks and no food, packed our bags loaded the car up and left around 8.30 leaving a note in phrase book French saying we had departed! As we had booked it through booking.com we contacted them later that morning telling our tale, they too thought it a bit strange and promised to find out more. As we drove looking for a new hotel for that night we got a call back from booking.com telling us that they had got hold of the hotel waiter who told them the hotel closes from after breakfast on a Monday until breakfast on Tuesday. Well I’ve heard of small family run hotels were the kitchen is closed for one night to allow the chef some time off but I’ve never heard of a hotel that is abandon for nearly 24 hours with guests still staying! We had paid a 10% deposit to booking.com and asked the to get the hotel to send us a bill for what we had had up until our departure believing that they would deduct the already paid 10% deposit and third nights accommodation we had not used. But no, we get a full bill with no deductions not even the prepaid deposit and they have already taken the money off the pre-registered credit card we had given them. What a check! To say the least we are in dispute with them and booking.com and hopefully we will get our refund! Don’t stay at Le Relais des 5 Chateaux or the Marie Celeste as we named it, on a Monday unless you like being left all alone, don’t want a drink or have a swim and know what to do in an emergency in the middle of the night.

My favourite destination bar none

I recently stayed at Le Manoir de la Malartrie to celebrate my 50th birthday with family and friends. It was my 3rd visit to this beautiful place and it was all I could have hoped for. The rooms and gardens are extraordinarily gorgeous. The pool is warm as is the hospitality of Ouaffa, the host of this wonderful place. She made everything about my celebration fantastic and I will always be grateful to her. This is a bucket list destination and well worth every penny.

Hard to imagine as warm a welcome

We visited Chez Gallon with my parents and my brother and booked all three rooms. What a beautiful place and the rooms are unique and very well presented. Madame Sophie was an amazing hostess and made us feel more than welcome. Both her and her husband went out of their way to be make us feel at home and even helped with travel when things went wrong -- something we will never forget and be always grateful. Breakfast was always a surprise with home baked cakes and treats and an excellent choice of delicious home made jams. Strongly recommended. We will be back for sure.

Incontournable havre de paix

Reviewed By herv_g321

Reviewed By hfrevent
