Art and Orchids

A haven for artists and those who love tropical gardens. Luxury at an affordable price. Wake to the sound of rainforest birds in our spacious home on the Big Island of Hawaii, 15 miles from Hilo. All rooms with private baths, one with jacuzzi. Decorated with high quality art. Relax in our hot tub. Breakfast includes macadamia nut granola, eggs, ham, local tropical fruit, sweet and whole-grain bread, Hawaiian honey and jam, tea, and local coffee.

Just the right feel of rain forest!

This review was overdue for a long time. We stayed here in Nov 2012 in Rainbow Room! The location is absolutely perfectly located between Volcano park and Botanical gardens. Had a wonderful breakfast provided by the hosts. Markie is very warm and welcoming (also very helpful). We were the only family staying with them there. My daughter who was 4 year old then (and Californian not used to soo much rain), was a little scared by the rain and frog noises at night but its a different side of Hawaii that we are glad we explored.

Kia'i Kai Bed and Breakfast

Villas Coral Deluxe, Playa Blanca

Villa was lovely apart from the fact it had no ceiling fans or air conditioning - despite being advertised as having ceiling fans. Pool was great and only 100 yards from the main hotel. Chill out bar was especially lovely - although this was not included in the All Inclusive package.

Rainforest Retreat

Loved this place - Couples and families will both be happy here!

Rainforest Retreat 2 nights. This place was wonderful. Much like the design of the Secret Beach Cottages on Kauai only the living-room was twice the size and it would sleep a family of 4 no problem. Plus it was just outside the VNP in Volcano Village (less than 5 minutes). Upon our arrival they had delivered to our cottage very nice muffins and fruit for breakfast the next morning. There are 4 cottages on the property but with the rainforest surrounding us, you could not see the others places. And absolutely NO BUGS. We could leave our windows open. Again - this was a wonderful place to feel alone but so close to everything. The furnishings and everything were top notch and great. Fireplace, DVDs, cool music to chose from..... just a great place. We ate that night at the Kilauea Lodge. It was a 10. Wonderful gourmet food. Yummy. The restaurant was rustic but the food was upscale and wonderful. Service was topnotch.

It is very easy to feel completely at home here. Every amenity you are used to is available, ranging from a fully equipped kitchen and a washing machine (with soap!) to a pair of umbrellas that came in extremely handy during what was apparently the wettest season of the year. Ideal place for a base HQ -- about 20 min to Hilo, 40 min to Volcanoes NP, an hour to Mauna Kea. Perfect place to relax people, in a semi-isolated suburban setting. Ideal for 1 or 2 people plus a kid. Some logistical notes: -- Check in time is 2pm. My flight was due to land early, so I called the caretakers and they managed to get the suite ready by 11:30. (I hadn't realized what a massive effort it must have taken them to do that until I got there and saw the place -- it was astonishingly spic and span.) -- Check out (by 10am) couldn't be easier -- you just leave. -- Both Apple and Google maps give you perfect directions, which I was (needlessly) worried about in case I had to get there late at night. Easy to get to, easy to recognize when you get there (there's a green reflective road sign at the front of the driveway), and the directions they send you by email are quite comprehensive. -- The room lock is via a passcode which is sent to you a few days ahead of arrival. You punch in the numbers, which unlocks the deadbolt. Twist it open, then the door knob, and you are in. Locking it is a similar process -- hit the "space bar" key, which activates the deadbolt, turn it, give it a few seconds to deactivate, and that's it. -- There is parking for two large car/SUVs or three compacts to the left side of the driveway, ample for the two suites that are on the property. -- Wifi was easy to connect to, and was quite fast. -- There is plenty of utensils and "emergency" rations in the kitchen, but you may want to lay in your own supplies of coffee and other essentials.
