Regrettably we only booked one night on our return trip from the Lava Tubes to Cairns as the Lodge was an excellent accommodation choice. Reception was extremely friendly and dispensed all important information very efficiently. Luckily we enquired about dining in the restaurant and secured the last table. The accommodation was excellent. The room was large, well furnished , complete with a comfortable lounge. The bed was excellent. The outdoor seating area was an unexpected bonus as it overlooked the extensive well manicured grounds. It was a great spot to enjoy a pre dinner drink. The pool looked inviting, maybe next time. The continental breakfast served in the dining room was very relaxed and civilised. We were luck enough to meet one of the delightful owners Will definitely stop again and longer next time we are in the area. The restaurant review is done separately

Rose Gums Wilderness Retreat

Enjoy a secluded rainforest retreat in the cool highlands above Cairns, all our treehouses are self-contained featuring spa baths, fireplaces and magnificent views. The 93 HA property has 9 kilometres of walking tracks and over 160 species of birds and other wildlife, including Platypus that inhabit our pristine rainforest creeks. Delight in our own in-house restaurant, LEAF, a private dining experience in the tree-tops. Your hosts Peta & Jon are very friendly and helpful and are looking forward to meeting you soon.

Rainforest immersion

This is a true getaway experience from the distractions of the city life. No TV and in our case no mobile reception. While for some this may be a real negative for us, it was a detox. Rose Gum Retreat is nestled in the rainforest with tremendous views and very comfortable accommodation. We stayed in the Cockatoo (1) retreat which overlooked the valley below and the rainforest mountains in the distance. The rooms are well equipped with kitchen facilities to ensure you can cater for your needs. Note that you will have to do your shopping on the way as you are a little remote. There is a small pot belly/fireplace to take the chill off the evening air. As you are up in the hills, the weather is cooler and as we found quite wet. There are plenty of tracks to walk as well as day trips to attractions close by. Make sure you check out the ‘Hippie Hide’ in the morning to see the small rufous rat-kangaroos. Just another tip is to make sure you have insect repellant. This is the rainforest and there are mosquitoes and leeches should you venture along some of the tracks. We had a great experience even though the weather was unseasonably wet. Would very highly recommend.

Sharlynn B&B

Sharlynn is a stylish and private self-contained cottage, which hugs the edge of the rainforest. The river will serenade you as you dine on your very own verandah deck. We are pet friendly but dogs MUST be kept outside for health reasons and the comfort of other guests. Due to abundant wildlife cats are not permitted

Wonderful spot and great hosts.

John and Pam De Rooy are the best hosts and we enjoyed fresh fruit and great Gallo cheese along with lots of other local produce. Set right in the rainforest and on the South Johnston River it is a beautiful location and there is a slow combustion fireplace to keep you lovely and warm on cool winter nights. It is a spacious appartment with a well appointed kitchen and a great bathroom with a spar bath which has a view of the rainforest along with a seperate shower. It's a great place to just relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounds.

What a find!! A beautiful guesthouse restored and elegantly styled. Attention to detail. Big rooms and super comfortable bed. The food is great. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. The small touches are lovely such as coffee bags instead of international roast. Sitting by the fire is perfect.

Breathtaking views

We stayed at Dunkley's for 2 nights.... basic and simple with a touch of Bali inside... but the views were breathtaking. To see the sunrise along with a field of mist with colours only an artist would love, was just divine. To watch the chickens from your balcony, show the other birds just who's boss, was funny; however the sunset snaps we have will be some of the best pictures we have taken this year.
